Watched the trailer for the up coming F2F browser game "Star Trek: Infinite Space". Not promoting it but it was a cool trailer. Aside from the fact that shields were completely ignored, the hull explosions made me realize what STO is missing. When a shield facing is down and a torpedo makes a direct hit to the hull, there should be a big explosion. Maybe not even limited to torpedoes, cannons would also have debris and and explosions upon hitting the hull. Phasers might have a little explosion. In compliance with the current system, having the warp nacelles dim and flicker at 25% hull and portions of the ship blow off at different damage levels. I love how one of the nacelles on the Intrepid falls off after the ship is destroyed.
-Hull explosions upon direct hits (size varies between torpedoes, cannons, and beams)
-Nacelle dimming
-Ship pieces falling off

The big thing I think the IS people are doing right is hiring "Star Trek Experts" to ensure the look and feel is right. Everything they have talked about so far sounds like it will feel more trekish then STO.
That said I WOULD LOVE for STO to implement some cool damage FX!
