Voice Overs? CROWDSOURCE!

Maybe it's not an Epiphany, but I think I'd still like to suggest it.

If the Devs and TPTB seriously want to bring more voice into the modules - you've got a HUGE opportunity to do it for peanuts.

You've got a huge fan following who would do it for very little - give us some Cryptic tokens, or a free month... I think you might even find there are a number of fans in the mix who would give their left leg to give the voice for a Ferrengi or a Romulan Subcommander.

Why not create a submission system where you could post a picture, NPC character profile, and a block of dialog, then invite us fans and players to give that NPC voice? Take the submissions, go through them and pick the one you like best and then get said individual to do the voice. Give him (or HER!!!) a few cryptic tokens or a discount or something, and voila you've got a voice track for next to nothing.

It improves the game, it lets the players help that improvement, and it costs very little!

And if you are worried about 750 submissions for a single entry? Why not crowd source the evaluation of the voices? Have the community review and pick their favourites, then accept the top 10... or 20 or whatever for review by the Devs who are working to put out a professional looking and sounding product?

You've already begun crowd sourcing missions through the Foundry, why not expand the concept? Why not even move further and invite musical artists in the community who might be able to come up with trek sounding music to submit it too, under Creative Commons?

This is my 2 cents that woke me up saying "wow, what a great idea" this morning, and I wanted to share.

Thanks,

-Scott

You bring up some excellent points. Many players would do it for free just to improve the game.

The main problem is that most players don't have proper audio recording equipment in their houses. Voice over for a game requires proffesional audio recording equipment.

    THIS

It's my understanding that professional VO actors have to be members of the screen actors guild (SAG.) That means any of us here would most likely have to register with them/be part of it before getting a contract to do any sort of VO work.

Many professional Voice Actors aren't part of SAG, but another guild. I learned this when I contacted Tim Russ about providing voice work for STO. He's a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Naw, I think you're being too stickler here.

We're not talking about hiring people to do a job ... We're talking about simply re-using stuff under a Creative Commons license.

I can record my voice saying random stuff online and post it under a CCL and allow it to be reused... why does it have to be different?

I'm not suggesting that there be any money exchanged for the work - we're talking about short sililoquis anyways.

I already suggested this awhile back, community didn't seem to care for the idea

If this somehow managed to become the only obstacle between me and any voice work whatsoever, much less for this game, it wouldn't remain an obstacle very long.

Just throw the union paperwork in with my contract, for all I care.

Really the main reason this propbably wouldn't work is because your average player doesn't have professional sound recording equipment. It would be nice if they could do something like this though. Lord knows the game needs more voice work.

The main reason this doesn't work is possibly due to labor laws.

You can't pay someone for one job and not pay a slew of other people for the same job due to labor issues it presents. Stormshade said in a recent Priority One interview that players had suggested fan-sourced translations but labor laws in California prevent Cryptic from doing it.

These laws actually exist so that corporations couldn't exploit entry-level workers (as some corporations could have "volunteers" to crush labor unions and force professionals to take lower pay).
