Appearance slot for ships?

The new Rom shield "costume" is pretty nice, although since it does not scale with your level new players will eventually outgrow its usefulness. So would it be possible to have an appearance slot added for our ship so people could still have that appearance equipped but use whatever shield they want for their level?

It doesn't scale, but players can replay the mission (getting XP and new melee weapons in the process) to get the next level up.

Gets my vote. Although it would be better to make visual appearance something that can be changed in crafting.

Deconstructing one item (such as the Reman Shield or TOS Phaser), and crafting items with the same appearance but heftier stats.

I'd love the Reman look and the Aegis bonus.

reman look with aegis stats would be awesome. I vote for an appearance tab too.

I’d like to see that plus proper costume slots for ships like we have with our toons, so we could have 2-3 different looks for our ships.

The reman shield effects are cool. I suppose since Aegis has its own effects that they have good reason to keep it separate. That being said, I still agree with more customizing options in appearance. If nothing else, I'd really like to change my beam/cannon colors so that I can use disruptors on my feddie ships without cringing.

I had this idea that there'd be these bonus item slots where you can place non-combat items like fireworks or shuttle pets. Perhaps if you throw a reman shield or a type of energy weapon in these slots, that it'd override the appearance of what you're using without making you change out of your most effective set (like throwing a phaser beam array in one of those slots would make your disruptors look like phasers).

    A neat-looking shield that isn't a Covariant would be nice ;)

While it might be interesting (and certainly useful for canon purists), I think the database is fairly stretched already if we can't have much DOFF customization.

Also signed with a side of more personal bank space.

Though, I would like a more detailed system of appearance for the slot, I would like to have the option to mix a match parts from all sets, if I have them.

Example. The appearance tab would let me set the options of Reman Shield, Borg Deflector, Aegis engines, and whatever console is available. That is just assuming those are the only four things that will ever change looks. I would think there should be 3 slots on consoles alone, in case more come out that are universal.

    +1 Bank-Fu. ;)

Everquest II had something similar to this. It had an appearance tab that duplicated the slots for all body areas that you could equip items to that affected appearance (basically all of them). Appearance items went there, "stat" items went in the normal tab. STO could do that for ships and ground.

Thinking further... this actually strikes me as somewhat amusing, since the appearance-altering items grew out of requests for items that actually show up equipped on ships.

Now, I can see both wanting appearance-affecting items and the ability to mate any appearance to a ship regardless of equipment. I actually have both desires at once despite them being somewhat contradictory. Yay cognitive dissonance.

I think it wouldn't be an issue if there were a lot of such items instead of only a few.

Until such a time as that happens, though, I think maybe what might work is similar to CO - equipping some items adds costume features, which are also unlocked for general costume use on the character.

Yes... that would also probably be good too. Then you actually need to hang on to a copy of the item for appearance.

Well, assuming that an empty appearance slot defaults to the appearance of the functional-slot item. It'd be a PITA to have to have two copies of the same thing.

That's how it worked in EQII.

The Romulan shield is one of the reward choices for the Featured Episode Coliseum.

I played EQII myself. I thought the same thing when I saw the new shielding. It looked great, but I have purchased purple tier shielding that outperformed it, not to mention I still use the borg or aegis for the set bonus anyway. It would be awesome to have an appearance tab for ships so we could sport whatever look we wanted, while at the same time being able to keep the stats we want.

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. I really like the look of the Romulan shield but I prefer the set bonus from my AEGIS set. It would be great if we could just swap-out appearances without needing to change shields - in much the same way uniforms and other gear works.

It occurred to me, after my previous post, that STO's game engine has the ability to recognize items in your inventory. (Such as fireworks, etc.). I'm not familiar with the programming involved; however, I'm wondering if a possible solution (if the appearance slot isn't as feasible) is to have the ability to right click on whatever item you have equipped, and instead of disabling visuals, you could "change costume" to what ever same type item is in your inventory.

I'd still prefer the appearance tab concept as you wouldn't have to waste inventory slots for appearance only.

It's just a shame to have developers work hard at making visually appealing items, only to not be used because it has inferior stats to other items. Especially when we would love to sport the look. As items come out in the future it would be nice to sport different looks. It could fit with the timeline for the hard core fans that want it to stay "Trekky." After all, it is in the future compared to all series; there's more conflict, and we're using "retro-fitted" and experimental ships. So, no harm in unique looks for this period I would think.
