To have it to where you can set your ship to scan for what crafting items you're looking for, with the exception of the trace particles?
I need Radiation Samples, but I keep getting things like Alien Artifacts and Mineral Samples instead.
certain samples are in certain areas of the game.
talk with the area NPCs (i.e. the ones on ESD are near the tailor - forget the formal name for them) and they will tell you the type of samples available in the area (if i am not mistaken) as well as the needs (med supplies, comms arrays, etc) that is needed as well.
if i am wring about that, forgive. i just get used to what types of samples are in what areas.
Yes, but it's still not a guarantee that you'll find what you're looking for, as I said, I kept digging up Alien Artifacts and Mineral Samples when I was trying to get Radiation Samples.
barter them with someone else at MA or throw them on the exchange and pick up the ones you need there, or just save them. Even though you don't need them right now, you will likely need them later.
sell the ones you have got on the exchange and buy the ones you need to replace them.
giving us the ability to cherry pick the ones we want seems to be defeating the purpose of it a little. i highly doubt thats an option they would provide us, or something i think would be a good idea. its possible to make things too easy.
You won't be grinding forever, but it will take you a while. This link http://www.stowiki.org/Data_Samples has a chart that lists which region has which data samples. It is kinda annoying because radiation samples are used through all tiers (to craft schematics) but they seem to drop at a lower rate than the other tier 1 samples. I have an alt that does nothing but explore missions. I planned out all the data samples I would need to craft 5 sets of gear for ships up through a VA tier ship. Just grinding for the 30x explore accolade I got about ~ half of the radiation samples I would need.
Personally, I would not go to the exchange. The prices for resources seem to be hyper inflated and I didn't have any luck selling data samples or particle traces. I tried to price it under the lowest price, but after three days no such luck. You would probably have better luck bartering or swapping with a mate if you're in a fleet.
The fastest way to grind these is flying around Delta Volanis and picking them up. Pro tip: check which instance has the least players and switch there every now and then.

It is annoying, and yeah, I already checked that chart, as a matter of fact, I'm back in the Delta Volanis Cluster looking for them, but it's obviously going to take a while since they don't drop as much as the other deals like you mentioned, and IMO, there aren't enough anomalies around.
I'm in no way, shape or form messing with the exchange as people overcharge for stuff.
Isn't that the beauty of it though? You too can farm the data that you don't want and put it up on the Exchange for exorbitant prices, or more reasonable prices if you like to undercut the people who are overcharging.
Just giving out free Rare Particles does kind of defeat the whole idea of "grinding" as well as the entire reason that they added the mini-game in the first place.

You seem to have missed my post on the first page, I said that the trace particles would be exempt from that, cause the TRIBBLE you grind for is common.

well it kind of defeats the purpose of calling it an "unknown" mineral otherwise.
so in other words....yes.
i mean do you really want them to hand everything to you?
do some bartering, sell what you have to buy what you need.
if not, this is simply a sink as many MMOs have, and i doubt it will change any time soon...
