Starfleet Academy...

I was thinking it would be awesome to have Starfleet Academy included in the game. Perhaps as an alternate tutorial... It would be really cool just making a character and then choosing your class (science officer, engineer, or tactical) through different missions you decided to do at the Academy. Anyway that was just my thought and i was wonder what other people thought of if.

I think that I like the concept of Starfleet Academy more than I actually like it. Can you imagine having to start as a cadet at Starfleet Academy. It would be like a Star Trek version of Bully.

The way that I see the Academy as being included is the grounds, the buildings, a few science labs (crafting), a social bar, and maybe a few other things.

There could be missions there as well. Such as investigating a mishap that occurred with the cadets in flight training. (Anyone who can name the episode gets bonus points). Or perhaps, there could be diplomatic missions as well, like hosting a diplomatic summit?

I'm sure somebody is going to create some Academy missions when the Foundry goes live.

Starfleet Academy should be where we get ALL new officers from. New Duty Officers, new Bridge Officers. You have to go to Starfleet Academy to get new crew, period. Here's a good use for your shuttle, too. Fly on down!

I agree, it would be so much better bringing your character through the academy. Also maybe you could meet some NPC's to become part of your crew for later

I hope this is the case. It serves as an excuse to include Starfleet Academy.

Funny.... I was thinking the same thing.

I'd disagree with that. Starfleet Officers transfer from one ship/station to another all the time.

TRIBBLE tutorial. We should all start as cadets and spend many levels there. This game rushes you to Super Admiral Lord Extreme too fast.

I'd like to level up as a cadet and ensign for awhile. What's the rush to end game?

I hate to hype the old vapourware that was Perpetuals game vision, but they were going to have us start at Starfleet Academy as Cadets. (Anyone remember the famous picture of Starfleet Academy they made?)

I guess when Cryptic copy-pasted the Champions Engine to STO (for time and other reasons), it wasn't feasible to create that experience as starting like a normal Starfleet Officer.

I hope someday they can do this, because I'm alos one of the people who dislikes the 'everyone's a bloody Admiral' approach we seem to have. Starting us as a Cadet, and having to work our way up in rank would have been more helpful and meaningful to gameplay. (instead of reaching VA in 2-3 weeks) On the plus side, it might have meant including the missed Lt.jg rank that we somehow skip from Ensign to Lt. (Which means one more rank to earn and more levels for all!)

Mind you though, Cryptic would then need to figure out how the KDF members start in a similar fashion. There's isn't much 'canon'-wise that CBS would have on the subject, so it would be something akin to a military insitution/academy.
Maybe Cryptic could even hold another contest in the 'design the Klingon Defense Force Training Insitution' or whatever. *shrugs*

Anyways my point: Cadets = more playing and some more levels. And that should be enough to want this for anyone. (All it means is that we backtrack in rank to accomodate more levels and the increased ranks...very easy to do.) :p

    Could not agree more.

I too hate that EVERYONE is a VA. I enjoy leveling, gaining rank, but not in 2-3 weeks, ha! Too fast!

Adding the Academy as both a starting point (why isn't your first "ship" just a shuttlecraft as you are a cadet in training?) and also a place to recruit officers for duty and bridge work would be awesome.

One suggestion is that you create your character at the Academy and once that is mainly completely you are called to emergency active duty in the tutorial.

Have those of you who want to start as cadets in the Acadamy given any though to what you would actually _do_ during those levels?

    Indeed I have.
The Academy would basically be the place where you, the character, decide what career you wish to pursue.
Basically, instead of picking one the current 'classes' in STO, you start as a Cadet, and take 'tutorial' classes on what it migth be like to do a certain speciality in Starfleet (and here's a chance to increase it properly to Medical, Science, Engineering, Operations, Security/Tactical, and Command.) You can then go a specific route or hybrid your way through the career-builder at the Academy and go from there.

It's easy in writing, but I'm sure programming that for Cryptic might take time.

And how long do you expect that to take?

If it's comparable in duration to the tutorial that's probably fine, but if you're trying to make the first week or so of gameplay take place at the Academy, that would be a fast track to discouraging new players from sticking with STO. I know i wouldn't have kept my subscription if that was how the game played past the first couple hours.

If they redo the tutorials for each faction (especially after ground combat changes), having the academy experience would work well. Quinto's voice acting can even be preserved for most of the areas.
