Maybe by then they will have the system where players retrofit/refit or whatever their own ships. Im a little frightened of Cryptic designed ships...their aesthetic tastes....dont feel Trek to me. So I hope they really put some effort into these ships if they make new ones.
So little has been officially said on the matter of admiral/fleet admiral ranks that just about anything is possible, but a couple dev quotes come to mind.
One was the idea that fleet admirals could have "away teams in space" - if they did go that route, your team could be limited to T5, while only the player has T6 access. So people with more than one C-store ship would arguably get a bit more value from them since they wouldn't be retiring previous purchases for a newer ones. On the other hand, $15 is an expensive NPC follower. This also doesn't address the ships becoming obsolete for PVP, since it would probably only play a factor in PVE.
Another one (more likely, I think) was the ship crafting/upgrade/retrofit/etc system that's been discussed. In this route, existing T5 (maybe lower, who knows) ships could be improved to T6 equivalents, with a set of new ships limited to T6.
I'd rather see the second, honestly. The first solution would only solve one problem, and not in the way many people might prefer. The crafting system could potentially do a lot more than simply determine what happens to T5 ships at FA, it could add a huge amount of variety to existing ships at any tier - not just in the classes available, but in the capabilities within a single class. It's the more complicated solution, but a solution that answers many questions at once is usually a superior solution.
I was coming to post the same worries actually, then I saw this topic.
Those are concerns of mine too. I paid for fancy ships, I do NOT want those ships to be outdated.
Further more; I do not want to be required to have a BO style fleet following me around in space! It should 100% be an optional thing, you can stop at VA or take a job as a Fleet Admiral or something. And I that sorta splits the player base up even more so I'm not so sure about that...
I am fine with them adding it, as long as I don't HAVE to be a Fleet Admiral. I want a Ship not a Fleet of stupid AI pet ships.

Hadn't heard this one much, but I support this. THIS should be Tier 6 if anything at all.

Thats an equitable elegant, and frankly likable solution.
it doesn't make sence that there isn't a system in place to upgrade your ship because all these new designs cost money and if nobody buys them it is useless.
So does this mean we're going to have to farm 15 traces each and grind 150 emblems for every piece of Mk XVI purple gear we need? I assume at least Mk XII and XIV common stuff will come into game through the usual "standard issue vendors" and green stuff through Sixth / Seventh / Eighth Order exploration badges (or whatever replaces them) and crafting. But given the already drawn out process of gearing up at VA1, I'm not looking forward to the death march for FA11.

1. the Fleet Admiral cap raise would allow us to have our bridge officers command their own ships and join me in a fleet! (correct me if i'm wrong, but this is how i heard it)
2. i want to see more Cryptic-designed ships. Why? Because I like all of the designs (before you think that i'm crazy, hear this: not every ship has to be aesthetically pleasing to be a ship, they need to be functional as well, and the Cryptic designs all have their functions, even though the aesthetics aren't appealing to everyone)
3. more ships allows for more variety and options in the ships we will see (even if only slightly), which i support wholeheartedly
Tier 4 ships should never have been moved up to Tier 5. If Tier 6 is just going to be the third iteration of Tier 4, well, there are plenty of other games out there and STO can just continue to wither away until it rots.
After observing the large influx of subscribers this year, I find your prediction that STO is going to wither and rot to be highly unlikely. It is more likely that you simply hope it will wither and rot because the game isn't being developed the way you personally want it to.
Since I paid to play Star Trek Online, not STO: The Kiddie Generation, will Cryptic be refunding all my money to me if they continue this Tier 4 garbage?
If that's all it takes to upset you to the point of wanting to quit the game, then I think Cryptic should give you your money back and send you on your way.
As for T6, I'm happy with their introduction at Fleet Admiral level, because that's the top rank players will achieve and will be the final level cap. I also imagine Season 6 will arrive around summer of 2012 which is plenty of time to enjoy T5 and get one's money's worth for them.
I always intreprited VA and above being Tier 6. Because the Galaxy, Intrepid, Defiant, and Vor'cha refits are only available at VA.
So if Tier 6 is implemented, those ships get graduated and the original T5 ships get T6 refits or we get new ships altogether. The Vesta being the T6 Science Ship and the "Enterprise-F" being the T6 Cruiser.
You paid for T5 ships. You have not yet paid for T6 ships. Here's my compromise: continuing to play your T4 ships into T6 should cost one million Atari points. Only then will you have paid for your entitlement.
Wow.... I would respond to the unintelligible statement, but I have been told not to feed trolls... So I can't do that, or insult the troll or anything like that....
Interesting points. Personally, if they do make a Tier 6, I'm hoping that the refit-through-crafting system that they've mentioned will be in place by then so we can upgrade other ships to Tier 6, or near Tier 6 capabilities.
I also hope they go with their original plan of allowing Admirals to command a small fleet of NPC ships.
Another one (more likely, I think) was the ship crafting/upgrade/retrofit/etc system that's been discussed. In this route, existing T5 (maybe lower, who knows) ships could be improved to T6 equivalents, with a set of new ships limited to T6.
I too would hope this is how we get our T6 ships. There are plenty of C-Store purchased ships in the game and being able to upgrade those through some kind of system only makes sense.
I just dont see why Tacs are not restricted to escorts, Eng to cruisers, and Sci to sci ships...then pick the ship you want at Lv 0 and have that ship level up with you as you progress to Lv51....
I'm not actually convinced there will be a Tier 6. If they do go the 'away team in space' route they might just have everyone - the PC included - in tier 5 ships. It is true that many of us (myself included) has spent a lot of money on Tier 5 ships Cryptic has poured more time and money into making these ships, and I somewhat suspect they won't lightly make so many ships obsolete.
Just my impression of course, since they haven said practically nothing on the subject.

My thoughts exactly. Plus, Cryptic uses a different definition of tier than the player base. Remember they called the NX class a "Tier 0" (Cryptic designation) when its a "Tier 1" by player base. Each number in the Cryptic designation was the number of promotions you've had: Lt (0), LC (1), Cm (2), Cp (3), RALH/RAUH (4), VA/Ad (5), FA (6). Whereas the players think of it as: Lt (1), LC (2), Cm (3), Cp (4), RALH/RAUH/VA (5).
The Vice Admiral retrofits are ships only available at (current) max rank yet still Tier 5 -- and compete just as well against ships you can get at level 41 as you can on 51.

People who bought those ships should be glad they got to continue playing Tier 4 for as long as they did.
Kirk kept flying the Connie even after the Excelsior had come along. Picard only moved up from a Galaxy to a Sovereign because the Ent-D got blown up; for that matter, he only moved up out of the Stargazer when it was lost too. Sisko kept flying the Defiant even after he got promoted (even replacing it with an identical ship when it was destroyed).
Having one ship and sticking to it is very much in the spirit of Star Trek; since the ships were, in many ways, just as important to the show as the characters were. Frankly, the idea that we need a new ship every time we get promoted is nothing more than a concession to traditional MMO players; not fans of Star Trek.
I just dont see why Tacs are not restricted to escorts, Eng to cruisers, and Sci to sci ships...then pick the ship you want at Lv 0 and have that ship level up with you as you progress to Lv51....
Because the idea that those classes fit is just a misconception from the game.
Personally I see two ways to make T6. Either they make the refit-crafting system first OR they just implement some kind of toolbox you unlock as a fleet admiral that allows you to create the customized ship you want. Otherwise.... I shudder when I remember how long it took to give the Klingons more than one lieutenant general ship, a whole new tier......
Call me crazy, but they may just create all brand new ships, and brand new Cstore ships too. But I could see them limiting the next tier to 1 of each class to begin with (for the Feds that is, Klinks they might take longer on as usual), then following on with more available from the Cstore later.
And personally I don't care if they make all new ships or just do a crafting upgrade, I'll probably be lazy and buy it in the Cstore anyways.
They've recently added a "improves as you level up" method to the shuttlecraft, there's a possibility they may add it also for T5 ships, at least the ones that can only be obtained via C-Store/Emblems. If they don't make them competitive in T6 then they aren't going to be making any sales on them anymore.
there are (i think) two canon instances of full Admirals basically telling Starfleet to "soup up" a ship they have a particular affection for for their own personal use.
imo that is likely to be how T6 goes (somehow)
its all very fine and well saying "its 2409 and i want new looking ships" (and there should be a few to choose) but tbh most people coming to a Star Trek Online game want to fly in the iconic ships and not to provide them with the ablity to do such when you have the license to make such a game is just plain stupidity.
personally i'd perhaps go the ablity to kinda custom design ships via the Starfleet Corps of Engineers and maybe have it involve going to Utopia Planitia to do it.
you would have limited options to "insist on" as upgrade additions to existing ships as a full Admiral.
like perhaps add a universal Lieutenant BO slot or a weapons bay to the front or rear...stuff like that....
Maybe by then they will have the system where players retrofit/refit or whatever their own ships. Im a little frightened of Cryptic designed ships...their aesthetic tastes....dont feel Trek to me. So I hope they really put some effort into these ships if they make new ones.
Yep I agree Morgomir: the way the Cryptic devs design ships...they really need to take their time and follow progression patterns. I'd really love to see an Aztec pattern on my ship's hull for hope's sake.
Tier 6 ships won't really be T6: They'll be a T5 with an extra console, or a nifty ability or two, or maybe a slightly better BO line up. Perhaps a tad bit more hull points.
They are not going to be like going from T4 to T5 was.
i do hope that if we get the ability to have pet follow us at fleet admiral that it is optional only for specific missions. im sure it will be but its important to have the option.
i also cant see the things we have bought becoming obsolete. if they do make a true tier 6 version of ships, im sure the ones you have bought will then be available for you so you dont have to buy them again. forcing people to re-buy ships or giving others free versions where people have paid money would be terrible.

The excelsior hull retrofitted played a huge part in the dominion war, 100 years + after it was first designed.
