The "Good Ole Days"

So, today, I was leveling my newest alt, playing Starbase 24 and I was hit my the most interesting emotion.

Nostalgia.
For the Open Beta days of STO.

The older interface, the "newness" of it. I thought about those first few hours and days of gameplay. The magic of it, piloting my own starship. Seeing all these crazy creatures and new environments. Seing a massive fleet surrounding the Starbase. And all the different, new loot from drops, what were these new things? :)

And then i thought about all the other problems, and they made me laugh!

Remember the constant servers going down. Getting yourself hunkered down for the exact moment open beta would start. :D

And who could forget beaming down to Vega Colony with like 80 other officers all trying to figure out how to get a phaser rifle. Trying to find that box. :)

In some ways, I still have fond memories from back when STO started and even before, when it was all hype and anticipation. It really makes me appreciate where the game is today.

Any old veterans out there? Why don't you share some of your favorite memories?

And to all the newer players, laugh at our old "war" stories. :D

I really miss the GOLD mouse pointer. I find myself wishing they would bring that back, sometimes in the heat of battle I lose track of my pointer, and having the gold one back would alleviate that annoyance.

That was a detail that escaped me. When did they change the pointer?

It was there in Open Beta, but when the game went live, it was with the Dark one that we have now.

It's fixable, client side. Not claiming I do.

Like any other game I started with, I miss the "new game smell", first time doing it, some bugs, the WTH am I supposed to be doing?. Above all I miss the "wow, that was cool! I didn't expect the Doomsday weapon!"

The new featured episodes bring a lot of that back at times.:)

So long ago I don't recall. I feel like an old war vet struggling to recall something from so long ago. :D

I know what you mean, Stahl has certainly been able to capture some of that magic again.

I wonder if any of the Dev's or Closed Beta testers have some awesome stories and cherished memories from the beginning? Dev's, you should chime in, I'd love to hear Stahl say stuff. :D

I remember flying my reliant on the inside of earth spae dock...and I remember Running in Sector Space. those were fun times. If only I could have ran into a DSE and shot phasers out of my rear!

I remember that too! In fact, today I was working on a foundry mission and I beamed into the Ready Room to set up a computer console and I beamed in as the Reliant. :)

I remember (and secretly sometimes miss) falling through the "floor" of sector space EVERY single time you zoned into it! Also, I loved leveling my first character because I didn't know what any of the missions were or how do to them properly...it was both very fun and very frustrating!

I been around since Closed Beta, and I think DStahl is correct, we can capture that essense again. But it has to be more or less a major expansion.

Because I got that feeling all over again when playing other MMOs like Everquest, you just don't know what's going to happen when you step in new lands. Are you high enough to survive or is it completely safe.

And with Exploration content, this could effectively be accomplished. It's just if the Dev Team has enough people to do it.

For me personally they are remembered as nightmares.

I remember how horrible and incomplete the game was back then, all the passionate pleas from players that were ignored, and the frustration that we had watching the game bomb after launch.

It was not a good time IMO.

After the first few days when the newsness wore off, I have those same feelings. But,also remembering it reminds me how good the game is now.

And I find some of the bugs funny in retrospect.

    Fun times.

I beamed into Memory Alpha as my ship, and figured out how to make it fly using the ground controls. I ended up by the domed ceiling, and got a good look at the "skybox" they have in there. It isn't very good, but it was fun to look at.

I played closed and open beta, and remember a lot of this.

However, this post sounds more aimed at placing us "veterans" on a pedestal, and since I hated when people did that in past games, I will not contribute.

Does anyone remember the Klingon Load Screen of Death?

I'm not much of a tester, so the betas were kind of frustrating for me. I wanted to play, not look for bugs. I got in the closed beta because of some special deal that Champions ran, and the only reason I accepted the invite was to see if my computer could handle STO.

I liked this game from day one. I remember the first time I ran the Azura mission in beta. I was blown away! I remember thinking that STO was going to be the greatest MMO of all time. The head start was a blast. After all the waiting, and the beta teaser, I was finally able to level a toon without worrying about him being wiped. None of the bugs really stand out for me. I'm glad that I got to experience the betas and the early part of Champs and STO, but I never want to go through it again.

I remember flying around, during the tutorial, seeing all the destruction the Borg had caused. It brought back memories of Wolf 359. Seeing all the broken hulls floating around and thinking "What difference is my little ship going to make?"

I rember Beaming up to my ship or vice Versus and Beaming down to planet Either in SPcae and my Toon or on ESD with my ship moving around. Now that was fun.

Ah, the good old times. When i accidently hit the full impulse button and thought i will die with the rest of my crew when crashing into ESD, and how relieved i was when i survived. :)

Or the first time i fought a borg cube that vaporised me with a 70k+ dmg plasma torp. ;)

back when closed beta was for only a couple of hours at a time on specific days.. i remember flashing through the character creation as quickly as i could so i could experience the game..

part of me kind of misses the "epic-ness" of the way a fight with a single ship could last 20 minutes from back then, but for the most part, i dont!

ground combat before crouching and "kirk-rolls" were put in, when you literally stood there spamming fire and how much everyone LOVED the improvements that gave us what we have now at the time..

and yes, the klingon loading screen of doom... warp in, load for 10 min with a one-eyed klingon staring at you, fight a single ship for 20 min then have the servers shut down for 3 days, knowing you'd have to start that mission over again once they came back up!

having to PvP because of a miscalculation in exp meant any character made before a certain date didnt get enough exp to level properly..

but the thing that sticks with me the most is that the devs have always been on the boards, and in-game as well.. (a fleet of ships called "Gozer's love-boat" if i recall) and if anything they've become MORE involved with the playerbase since beta.

regardless of what people think, and have thought of the game or even its financial overlords at Atari, the Dev team have always been a great group of people and i think thats something the players with complaints often overlook..

I miss leveling for the first time, just not knowing what would be next at all.

however I lost that feeling back in closed beta :)

Beside that I remember when I first made LTC just 2 minutes before the server would reset so I ran to get my new ship and view it quickly and than server wen't poof and I was very sad.

Still I do not want any of it back a game should move forwards at all times, but at least i been around for a while so to say :)

No, you misinterpreted the point of this thread. The point is to remember those early times and what made them fun (the newness and mysteriousness) and appreciate how far Stahl has moved the game.

Its is also for Newer players to hear about just how awesome it is now compared to launch. :)

If you don't get that, then I suggest you stay clear of any thread that talks about the games starting point or beta. :)

I don't even think I'm capable of nostalgia yet. I still see STO as not quite yet what it will be when it's "done". It'd be like construction workers hanging out on a tenth story beam, eating lunch, and reminiscing about how different working on the first floor was.

A buddy of mine was in closed beta. I ditched work to go over and watch him play the 2 hour play tests that they were doing. I still get all fired up about new stuff in the game just as much as those days though.

Incidentally, I tried out Champions Online...wow. STO is SO much better polished and smooth. Glad STO got more attention than Champs.
