Getting Wives and Girlfriends to play

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
My wife has played MMOs before (WOW being the last one). I asked her why she was not interested in STO (She sees me playing all the time). She explained to me that for starters there is limited dresses you can wear and only 3 skirts, limited colors and shoe selection and no hats. You cant do your nails or 2 tone hair etc Female stuff. She went as far to say her character in WOW was much prettier than any character in STO and that character was a druid cow (Remember this is a womans perspective). She says the landscaping is drab. No water falls no nice looking lake graphics that are in other games. If STO is to endure the woman are going to have to want to play it too. I'm a lifer so comeon guys put the stuff in that will get the woman playing (it will make more money for you too)

Jim... A Kirk Student.....WHAT PRIME DIRECTIVE????....WHERE?!?!?:)

I do not think your partners viewpoint is something you can say all women go by. My partner plays this game and WoW, after i introduced her to it. My work collegue (another female) also started playing after seeing me on the website and forums and asked if there was a trial thingy.

And to be able to paint your finger nails? WoW has WAY less character customalisation than this game does. It can not even compared, the charcter creation part is something cryptic always have been very good at in my opinion.

Maybe do what i did instead, buy her the game on steam for $15.00 and hope for the best, say it is because it is a part of your life, and you want her to be a part of your experience in game as well.

I have to disagree with your wife's reasoning.

The character creation in WoW is very limited (face shape, skin color, hair style/color, earrings, and maybe race-specific options such as tusk shape/color). Clothing is limited to whatever armor you can wear (so if you want to RP, you have to work at getting a certain set of gear, and you'd better hope nobody attacks you while you're roleplaying if you're wearing a low-level set of gear). WoW does have some pretty nice-looking clothes, but I remember farming for hours just to complete a single RP outfit. Some of the better ones took weeks or months to complete.

By comparison, STO lets you customize almost every aspect of your character, with multiple options on the face, body, and even what clothes are being worn. While it's true that there are only three skirt styles, the fact remains that STO's character creation and customization is loads better than WoW's.

As for the scenery...she's right., However, STO's scenery is getting better, especially with the recent foundry updates (it's not live on holodeck yet, but it'll be great when it does).

THis may be an off the wall question, but what is cryptic's policy on sharing one account with a significant other? Also, how can I "recruit" my girlfriend so we can play together, without having to start another account?

My wife plays on my account with her own Character, nothing wrong with that and she loves STO.

I cannot get my boyfriend to play this with me. And he is also a trekkie.
Why? He does not like MMOs. End of story.

And the OP needs to feed his wife a jumbogigantic steak. Rare one with fries on the side and copious amount of bloodwine.

MMO's have some features that many women can get into.
If STO would let you customize your ship interior, that would draw female players, I knew several women who played SWG and just crafted clothes and decorated their houses, shops, space yatch and towns.

Adding in changeable ship interiors, player/fleet bases (space and planetside, with the foundry tools people could make some really neat "houses") and more clothing options. If you want to make money on it, do a dress pack in the C-store, then give players 1 or two options free in game with some of the cash you make. Same thing with hats/sunglasses/cosmetic props.
