Who else would like to see this expanded on in Star Trek Online? It's one of the most alluded to things in Star Trek history that has never been gone into detail.

It'd be topical too. One of the precedents for WW III in Trek was the Bell Riots in DS9 - where unemployed and homeless were put in ghettos then resulting in a narcotic-addicted military force from the ashes of that then culminating in war.

Gene wanted those details to be vague on purpose..he was quite convinced WWIII was inevitable, so he used it to provide multiple parables of how the human race came back and even improved despite that.....sometimes it's best not to see the man behind the curtain.

Probably easier to wait a few years and experience it in glorious real-life-o-vision.

To be fair, the eugenics war of the 1990s with augments never happened. :p

What do you mean "expanded on"? Talked about in dialog? A time travel mission?

Man the same thing that happened to the genetics wars in Trek lore will happen with WWIII. The time for it to come will come and pass and it'll not make sense in Trek anymore.

Well...In Back to the Future 2 they have hover boards in 2010.

Where's my hoverboard? WHERE IS IT?!!?

It's more just a fun story, they had to have something to base the human race's need for the Vulcans to come when they did.

Back to the Future is light enough and good enough that nobody cares. It's one of the best movies trilogies out there. I hope they never remake them (though I'm seriously considering buying the new PC episodes based on them).

Funny thing is there are argumetns that WW 3 already happened or is happening now. It was the Cold War.

Depending on your take of it, you could say the Cold War ended when the Berlin Wall fell. Howver, I tend to view that we are in WW 3, Pt 2 - i.e. the War on Terror. Much of what Gene touch upon during this period has happened - genocide (Rowanda, Dafur, persecution of jews aroudn the world), and the religious aspects (Middle east anyone? Or the Koptic Christians in Egypt) to drug fueled armies (Several rebel groups in Africa are known to use drugs to make a more violent and controlled fighting force from rabble).

The notable exception is genetic manipulation, but that is not far behind. The Human Genome Project was the beginning, but given time, I fully expect to see advanced genetic manipulation. It will start with the 'beneficial like "We are doign this to eliminate birth defects" and rapidly morph into a battle of who can create a super being.

Personally I like my SciFi to be fantasy. If I want real life, I can find it everyday when i turn on the news.

If only cable news was as reliable as you describe. :p

Exploring the WWII and the Eugenics wars would be neat, even if the Eugneics wars would feel dated.

I always just considered the "Eugenics Wars" as WWIII, In trek. At the time of TOS, it (WWIII) was a specter still looming, but really, now a days it becomes less and less a possibility.

The Eugenics wars are still something that could come to fruit more readily than a all out nuclear war. We haven't even tried too GM people, and the hysteria over GM crops, could feed lots of fear over doing the same to humans. Makes good fiction. Post nuclear war as a genera died years ago, only a few hacks hold on to it every so often.

I quoted you because WWIII feels more dated than a Eugenics war, for simple reasons.

According to The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, the Eugenic Wars was a secret war that only those in power really new a war was happening until much later where it became a part of the history books.

I think that there has been extensive research into eugenics by the government. Its just an inevetibility. WWIII is another matter. Like stated, there are certain world events that be percieved to be events described on the show.

Who knows, the world is a crazy place and anything's bound to happen. Look at how fast WWI & II happened. It's unlikely though.

Sounds more akin to a pessimist's wishful thinking than the WW3 of Trek Canon, of which the topic is about. There is enough source material to place dates and some of the factions involved. The issues you state above have almost always existed in one form or another, however in Trek WW3 its not some small band of rebels high as kites and rampaging all over one country, its more like whole continents engulfed in genocide, multi-million man drug armies, and atomic bombs going off across the globe like firecrackers on the fourth of July. part of those genocides is in fact the wiping out of genetic supermen. (the rest of humanity didn't take kindly to being enslaved in the 90's). Trek history has a significant divergence from real life history starting in the 60's.

As for this modern war we are in, the death toll alone in the last 10 years of this war is staggeringly weak compared to the loss of life in just 7 years of the last world war. The "war on Terror" is more like the "War on Drugs" something that is never going to end. It is a string of small, unconventional conflicts taking place in select hot spots across the globe.

And just to be clear, the Cold War was a war like the Cola Wars was a war. It was an Arms Race that ended because one side went broke and the other told the best bluff ever devised.
