Be honest, would you recommended this game to a Star Trek fan? (me)

I have never played an MMO before, mainly because I never liked the though of paying $15 a month, but I'm considering giving this one a chance.

Is this game good? Would I enjoy my time playing it? I

First, consider this: actions speak louder than words. The majority of people who are able to post on these forums have subscriptions to this game, so regardless of what they SAY, their actions "say" that they think the game is good enough to pay for.

That said, what we think of the game doesnt really matter as far as you are concerned because everyone has different tastes that determine what they like. Just because I like a certain flavor ice cream doesnt mean you will, and that has nothing to do with the "quality" of the ice cream, it just has to do with our own personal taste.

Do I like STO? Yes. Will you? I have no idea. The best advice I can give you is pick up a cheap copy of the game. It comes with 30 days of play time, and after a month hopefully you will be able to tell whether YOU like this game or not :D

The Trek feel of the game has improved since launch because of the sector space and earth update. But there are some bothersome nagging things that some Trekkies would really be bothered by (ridiculous armor kits, ridiculous ship armor and effects recently released, ridiculous looking player characters and uniforms...the list goes on..) The ground combat is the least star trek part of the game, mostly because you basically have to button massh and point your enemies down relentlessly in a fashion that feels far from Trek because it is so slowly paced.

Other than some minor things like that that which bother some people more than others, its not bad. Its only going to improve with time as well. If you want to try an MMO, and like Star Trek then this is pretty much all there is.

I would recommend it , though if you've never played an MMO, try to get a cheap copy or a buddy key. MMOs are definitely not for everyone.

You are a Star Trek fan? Yes, I recommend this game. But here is a twist: I don't know whether you will like it as an MMO. Everyone has a different taste. But in my opinion, it has some great stories (especially the romulan storyline at commander level) that are worth experiencing for a trek fan. So, even if you are not sure whether this is the right MMO for you, you could always treat it as a single player game. If you have a lot of time, you can play through almost all federation single player story content during your first free month. And if you like the MMO part of it, stay subscribed, if you don't like it then cancel.

Just buy it. It's $2.50. Then you get a free month. That's cheaper than renting a game.

I'd recomend it. I today learned you can buy the game for $7.50, and provided the version you buy comes with a free month, what do you really have to lose by giving it a go?

Yeah, I'm asking around several places to try to get several sides to the story.

Do the buddy keys only allow for limited play (Like, once I reach a certain point, do I have to stop?) Cause it seems a lot of times when I try MMO demos they are just tutorials and I don't feel as though I am actually doing anything.

Because like someone else pointed out earlier, I am a ST fan, something tells me if I don't like this game, it is probably because I don't like MMO RPGs in general.

Yes, the buddy keys are limited to the demo I believe. Also, your last statement is not necessarily true. Cryptic's other game Champions Online is quite different from this one(and it just recently went free to play, so you can try that out for free if you feel like it). My point is, dont assume that because you like or dislike this one you will feel the same about the others. But as already mentioned, I would highly recommend picking up a cheap copy of the game and trying it for yourself. I would also recommend playing some of the featured episodes, as they are some of the best in the game.

If you do decide to try the game and you have any specific questions, feel free to send me a PM.

My personal view of the game: I love it. It does need improvements in some areas, no doubt, but it has been showing much promise in the recent months that ensure me that I've made a good purchase(life time subscription in my case).

I can't tell you if you're going to enjoy playing it. I can just tell you my views and experiences with it. When it comes to games, it takes little to make me happy. But I can tell you that since purchasing Star Trek Online, I have bought less games last year than I have in a long time because I've been playing this one so much. I did recently purchase a game from a series I am personally a huge fan of, yet I've hardly touched it. It's not a bad game, but I'm wrapped up in STO, you know?

But as far as the game goes, I got it for these reasons: 1. character customization; what's cooler than having your own ship and crew with in depth customization tools? 2. I wanted to try an MMO. I am familiar with Star Trek, more so than the other series/MMOs out there, so this was the safest bet. I didn't like the idea of pay to play either, hence going with lifetime. Not something I would suggest getting first off though; I got one before the game came out and took a huge gamble by doing so. It paid off, but still.

Space combat, in my opinion, is amazing. It's a really cool system. People tend to not like ground combat as much, though I don't hate it that much. There could be more diplomacy, but they're working on that I believe.

I could probably go on, but I'd probably end up moving from topic to topic which would get quite hypnotic. As other have suggested, I would highly recommend buying the game and playing that for a month.

It depends on what you like in a game. Some fans of the IP either hate or love this game, so telling us more about what games you'd enjoy would help more. :)

If you're into creating your stories and fan fiction, you'll be able to create your own missions this month when the Foundry launches.

If you're into Trek stories by professionals, the three weekly series (and much of the Klingon PvE content) is outstanding.

I think I'm going to pick it up sometime. Thanks for the input. I don't know when yet, cause I'll be busy the next couple of weeks, but I definitely will, especially since it is so cheap.

I'm probably gonna buy the game (which comes with 30 days free) so I'm gonna use that to gauge whether or not I should buy more months.

Also, is it possible for someone to buy the STO game, and use its 30 free days over and over?

You can only apply one game-included 30 day period to an account ever.

Not without creating a new account each time, no.

    Hope you enjoy it :)

    In a word: Yes.

However, that's based on very little information.

The real question is, what kind of Trek fan are you?
    • Did you enjoy the high-minded philosophical, ethical, and legal quandaries presented by various episodes of the movies and series?
    • Are you a "ship geek" who loves the technology, form, and function of the various vessels?
    • Are you an action-oriented Trekker? Want to blow some hostile alien species into space-dust?

This game has different things for different people. For you philosophers out there, the weekly episodes have lately taken a turn for you, you get to decide if a group outside the Federation deserves help, even if doing so will violate the Prime Directive and the wishes of Starfleet Command! But, this is a new development, 99% of the game has no such choices, not even the Diplomacy Sytem.

For you ship geeks, just play, new ships are introduced all the time, and just going through all the fdifferent kinds of ships and ship customizations will take you three characters and necessitate getting to the cap with each.

For you action-oriented types, come on in, Space Combat is this games main Course, and the Ground Combat is soon to get a revamp!

I'm a long time Star Trek fan, a lover of video games... especially Sci Fi genre... and the last MMO I played Was Everquest Online Adventures. I'm a huge STO fan.

think of it like Mass Effect meets Star Trek Legacy.... then add an unbelievable amount of customization and gameplay... and you've got STO.

This is my first MMO. I was hesitant due to the bad reviews at launch... when I joined in November I would have described the game as 'okay', but I am still here and even in the last four months the game has improved considerably. It still has a way to go, but I would say, "just try it", join in on the forum here and make your opinions known to help steer future development. I tried it, and I am still here and I play it almost every single day now! :)

Game keys stack, so for each game key you apply you get another 30 days. That means if you find a copy of the game that is cheaper than the monthly sub, well, there you go.

I'm not sure game keys stack. I once heard that only keys from different editions of the game stack (i.e. Digital, Standard Retail, Collector's Edition, ...). But since I am a lifetime subscriber, I can neither deny nor confirm any of this.

30 days as part of regular purchase doesn't (unless the second copy is, say, a collector's edition).

Game time cards do, which might be what you're thinking of.

When Champs first came out, I bought a digital copy from direct2drive. I also purchased the 6 month sub. When that lapsed I didnt play the game for a while, but a month ago I bought a cheap digital copy from amazon, applied the key to my account, and got the 30 days.

    Yes i would.

After watching an episode of a Star Trek serie i really get the feeling to login and fly my own star ship.

TBH i think it is just for fans because if you are not a fan the game, and sorry for being so honest, it offers too less.

If i didnt watch Star Trek i would not be playing and paying (for) this game. And that's not a good think but i still enjoy it so i don't care :P

You can always try it if u want a trial key u can PM me

Except people have recently tried this with STO with the price drop and the $2.50 copies don't stack.
