As I was fiddling around with my fleet emblem last night, it occurred to me that it would look better in a different place on my ship. Then I thought it would be nice if we could, in the ship tailor, select the location of our fleet emblems. (Sort of like the nose or tail art on a war plane)
This would, of course, involve un-nerfing the zoom in the tailor so you could zoom up to the emblems to play with their rotation; but I think it would be worth it.

First, you would go into emblem mode and select your emblem. Your choices would be "None" "United Federation of Planets" and "Fleet Emblem"
Second, you would either click the location where you want your emblem or drag it from the box onto your ship. Adding it to the port or starboard side would automatically mirror it on the other side; however, dragging it to the centreline would snap it to a centred location (ie above or below the registry).
After you've selected its location, you might be able to rotate and zoom the emblem to give it more real estate on your ship's hull or lean it over. The emblems would be layered behind both the registry, name, windows, escape pods, sensor arrays, weapon hardpoints, warp grilles, Bussard collectors, shield emitters etc. This means that placing it over one of those locations would partially or wholly obscure your emblem.

Another option I would love to see would be if we could select "No patch" for the emblems, giving the first and second layers an embroidered edge (like a patch) and placing them directly on the uniform sleeve.

Or perhaps add a third layer to your fleet emblem signifying your ship.
That's why, in the first post, I specified that one of the options would be "None" for fleet emblems.
