Cryptic - Ive been playing Star Trek Online for Mac for about 8 months now. Im using doh123's Wine version, which btw runs amazing. The work he did on it is incredible. Is there any chance you guys could take his port and make it Official? And announce Star Trek Online for Mac. The game is ready to come over to Mac. The graphics and frame rate are incredible.
Here are my specs:
iMac 27" 2.66 QUAD Core
4GB Ram
ATI Radeon 4850 HD 512 MB Ram
STO Settings:
About 2560 x 1440 Display
2 Out of 3 Performance
Frame Rate: Great!
Ive seen doh123's STO version run on a White Macbook that has:
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
And the frame rate was great!
What do you think any chance of STO coming to Mac ... Officially?
* And Thank you to doh123 and anyone who helped making this port a reality
Great suggestion. We've pushed to get the ball rolling on this and in the past I thought we were close but it just hasn't happened yet for reasons out of my hands.

Great to hear you guys are trying to make this happen. I would love to see a Mac port of STO. If it does happen you can be sure Id recommend STO to my customers at Apple. "And did you hear Star Trek Online one of the best and biggest games is available for Mac now .... for only xx.xx bucks lol"
So technically you guys can't officially support the Wine (STO runs fairly well on Linux kUbuntu/Ubuntu too btw), but would'n it be possible to make a "user featured forum posts" on the official webpage.
Basically take the most creative solutions to problems, that work of cause, and post them on the webpage with a BIG FAT DISCLAIMER on the top saying somthing like:
Well this kinda works, but we don't support it. Use it at your own risk on your partially FreeBSD based operating system?
Also Dan if you guys do manage to make The STO Mac Port official I think brining it to The Apple Store is a must. Cant tell you how much foot traffic we get. It would also turns some heads as people look for a great game to play on Mac.

Its been discussed but didn't happen the first time around. I'll bring it up again and see what happens.

good to know that there is hope, an official port would be great.
+1 /doh123s wrapper is great
I'm also in favor of this. It would be a lot of new subscribers for STO. I run the game on a MacBook Pro and other than a few crashing issues with ESD the game works brilliantly. I don't have any kind of lag, or graphics issues. I actually load in zones faster than my Windows counterparts. Other than the major MMORPG's like WoW, Everquest, CoH, Warhammer, or EVE Online, there's no other options for Mac gamers...also with Cryptic's experience with the Mac version of "City of Heroes" i think it could be done.
My Specs:
MacBook Pro 15"
Intel Core i7 2.66 GHz
8 GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
1680 x 1050

I know that STO on the XBOX was canned for good, but is there any chance we can get a proper XBOX controller setup for the PC? Is there some way for the team to design a power wheel tool so we could map our powers and easily access them on the controller?
I'm running STO on the previous generation Mac Mini running Windows. I have to shut off some of the higher performance graphic options, but the game still looks and plays great.
I've been running it on a macbook and even with the graphics settings turned way down (not all the way) it looks fantastic.
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
Memory: 2 GB

This would be greatly appreciated! Especially since my Mac has better graphics than my windows machine.
Nooo.... I have a mac as well as a PC... I got the Macbook laptab so that I could use it for work and productivity without the temptation to play games.... don't noo.... -whimper-
The big holdout with my IRL friends who have a WoW guild is that maybe 2-3 out of 10 or so are Mac users not proficient enough to use Bootcamp. Their computers are not primarily gaming computers, they're NOT rich, and some of my friends come from Mac only homes and play few non-console games.
It's not that Mac users make up the majority of the gaming market. But one or two people as a holdout can prevent another ten from playing.
One of my old roommates played STO some and liked it but his MMO time is with his girlfriend, who likes Star Trek, but has almost never touched Windows. She'd like to play. I bought her a copy, not thinking. But even if she did use bootcamp and blow a fair amount of money when she only plays WoW on her computer, ordinarily, Windows is just alien and frustrating to her.
And she's the guildmaster of our WoW guild, half of whom love STO and half who are ambivalent and only interested in playing with IRL friends. So in this case, that one Mac only user is the difference between two of us playing STO and ten. (And our other friend is a Mac user that has sworn off MMOs, wants to play STO, but has the excuse that there's no Mac version to talk himself out of playing when he's tempted.)
I can't stand having to re-start into Windows JUST to run STO. Since I do everything else under OS X, I would most likely play even more if there was a Mac version.
As for those who laugh at Mac gaming, you should try gaming on a Mac Pro with a beefy graphics card...
I'd like a Mac client as well. Although I have a tower PC for gaming at home, I tend to carry a MacBookPro when traveling; it would be nice to have STO there and not to have to bootcamp into Windows to do it.
I also have a 27" iMac with a 2560x1600 display, and I did bootcamp to play PC games for a while. The extra pixels and average GPUs require lower graphics settings for a good framerate, but having all that real estate is marvelous.
Its been discussed but didn't happen the first time around. I'll bring it up again and see what happens.
You would probably get another LTS out of me (for my wife) and plenty more people if you did officially offer a version of the game for Mac. My wife isn't going to run anything that isn't licensed or official.
I've been playing it on the newest Macbook Air 11" via boot camp. Runs great, not the best graphics but its the air so I wasn't expecting it to be. I would love for a mac version so I could rid my mac of windows.:)

WOW STO RUNS ON THE MACBOOK AIR" - I work for Apple and work on them everyday... I knew they were powerful but runnin STO wow. It does have The NVIDIA 320M in it so I guess thats what does it. Plus SSD helps lol.
does this game run under a quad core i7 with a 6750 1g dedicated DDR5 graphics card?
but more importantly, can it run Crysis?
edit;
a Mac version would be awesome. But make it clean, Doh lives up to my expectations because it's third party, by few people. I've played a few games and been disappointed on how they handled the creation/port of my version.
Many might not know, but I do play on a Mac, so this would be very useful and I am in support of it.
I support Linux and Microshaft products all day at work, and like to go home to my Mac. Having to boot XP ( I refuse to buy anything new from M$ ) to play STO on my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro is depressing .

Im the same - Refuse to buy any Microsoft products. I was able to get Microsoft Office 2010 free through my job... and I refused to take it. I took a college course in it - got a A - but would not use it again. Too cluttered, too many options, and not easy to learn. I use iWork and love it. Simple, easy to use... 1 2 3 and my document is done .

I'm sorry I can't help it.
Lol gaming on a mac.
You have no idea how much I want to add "ahahaha" and disparage the poor selection of graphics card right now, along with the high price.
Ahahahaha mac gaming, new imacs £1500 and still only a 5750 for a graphics card, ahahaha.
Sorry.
I hope you guys can get an official version, when I was using Linux gaming on that was a pain even with Cedega.
I'm using doh123's solution as well... the fonts are a little off in spots, but otherwise I have no issues with it.
I didn't know STO could actually run on a macbook. I have one so I'm very interested and all up for this

All you need is either The CD Disc or a STO Online Account and download the game from the server.
Then just download this port - http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=76799 - Follow the instructions in it... and boom your done.

Try Getting The Unofficial Port by doh123 - http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=76799 - it works great. This is the build were suggesting Cryptic uses as their official Port for STO to Mac
