I've noticed that too. The BOs tend to retain far less aggro than I do. Although, after the initial round of fire, the mobs seem to settle on other targets.
Also, do you AOE weapons a lot? Aren't AOE weapons, more or less, tank weapons?
I usually send my BOs in to attack my target first, usually whomever I deem to be the toughest target, and hang back for a few seconds waiting for exploit shots before I join the fray. This cuts down damage to myself as well as my BOs, and ends the fight sooner.
If you just charge in shooting, you are going to get most of the damage as you typically do more damage then your BOs and are therefore going to draw more aggro, especially if you pop grenades or AOE attacks as you rush in. This is also true with player teams. First one to rush in (whether space or ground) is going to get all of the aggro until someone else starts doing significant damage.

That's how I usually run things, as well, and hardly ever have issues. I like to send my BOs in, then slip around the back to the strongest targets (which they are already working on) and flank them for that extra spicy damage.
