Voice over question

What does everyone think. Should Voice over acting be incorporated into every remastered episode going forward, or should it be saved for special events such as Featured Series?

I think we can all agree that the new featured series is over the top, between the cut scenes and the voice over work, it is absolutely amazing. I'm sure it takes a lot of resources to have this level of awesomeness into this series. However, I'm not exactly sure I want it in the remastered episodes. Cut scenes are a given and needed to polish the older episodes, but I think that if VO were to be added to everything it would lose some of its appeal and make the features a little drab and more like the everyday stuff we already have. What are you thoughts?

It can certainly be overused. I'd like to see a little more VO work in the major missions, but not to the extent used in the episodes. Maybe just have the primary quest giver read the mission objectives.

i think it should be applied to any npc character that is of some significance to the game. VO really helps one to understand the character AND somehow helps the face and name of the characters to become more recognizable. all the mission givers and main characters in missions make my mind rattle tryn to think back on them. but obisek and tnae i remember in an instant, and will continue to because of VO

another area it would help with is diplomacy missions and any dialogue based/heavy missions. paging through makes it boring; not because the story is uninteresting, but because it gets tedious after a while. VO would help flesh that out and add interest, which will eliminate the yawn factor for me, personally.

as for VO for secondary npcs, and boffs.. i would limint those to small shout outs. interactive boff dialogue could be cool when visiting the bridge..

they engage you in some passers-by type talk when you walk around the bridge: "good morning captain"
and talk about recent events like episode chains currently in progress: "hey captain, i feel really bad for obisek, but i know we have our orders. a shame"

anything beyond that .. is overkill.. boffs making needless chatter on missions like saying "im on it" and "i'll get em" "Pa'chow! take that orion!" just no... too distracting.

maybe simple stuff like introductory, mission objective type, and concluding talk on missions.. "captain im picking up 4 anomalies in the area" "captain i uploaded the data, we are ready to proceed" "captain, our mission was a success, ready to beam up" anything that would be useful during times i need to concentrate is ok and would be welcome, when done right.. keep the useless stuff to social or immersion zones. anything more is pushing the threshold for me

one non VO issue i noticed is the mini dialogue popups. sometimes i dont get to finish reading them. would be nice for those to show up on the NPC chat like normal dialogue does. that way i can read it in a crunch if i miss out on reading it.

I would like to see it them on all Main storyline episodes, including STFs, Remastered Episodes and Weekly episodes.

But things like patrols, DSE's or exploration missions don't need them...

Yeah, not DEs or patrols. Unless they're really cool!

To be totally honest, very very little. Voice over acting, is expensive, and they already are running a tight budget/small team. if/ when they can get them for little outlay, wonderful, if not, forgo the VO and put the development money into the game itself.

I'm of two minds on the subject which is why I started the thread. On one hand I love the epicness that the VO work on this feature is adding to the missions. These are the best missions yet in the game. With that regards I want to keep the VO only for these episodes because then it will just add to how great they will be when they release.

On the other hand, adding VO to the remastered episodes as they do them would add to the overall quality of the game. The launch story lines with the different factions are in themselves like featured episodes and have the story quality to be such, the tech to make them like they can now just wasn't there.

    I'm still torn.

If they can do then i say let them, because all the new mmo coming are all voice over. Guildwars 2, earthrise, star wars:TOR, black prophecy and i think eve-online too is going voice over. we don't want to left behind.

I think certain remastered eps need voice work. The diplomacy ones for instance. They're nothing but text, due to the nature of diplomacy, and it can get quite boring reading through all that text. It kills the plot completely.

Also, some of the better storyline missions deserve more voice work, IMO:
    • The Ultimate Klingon
    • City on the Edge of Never
    • Past Imperfect
    • Taris
    • Devide Et Imperia
    • Crack in the Mirror
    • The Long Night
    • Cage of Fire
    • State of Q
    • All of the missions involving Franklin Drake (he really needs a voice)

I think the place where voice belongs most is when there's a character who should be memorable, whose name we should remember, particularly if they plan to have us deal with that character repeatedly.

I can see already here that it's increasing people's recognition of Hakeev, T'Nae, and Obisek considerably compared to similar NPCs like the Breen guy.

Agreed. IMO, B'Vat, Franklin Drake, Taris, and Miral Paris need voices, since they're all pretty recognisable or important characters.
