Commodore Title - Included with TOS pack?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
So far, we've seen TOS interiors, Kirk's wraparound, and the TOS dress uniforms.

I'm just wondering if this is the place for the Commodore title as well, since the official stance seems to be that it was a TOS-only title.

Or if we'll see the other ship patches from TOS and phaser holsters unlocked for use with TOS uniforms. Maybe a TOS Tricorder as a chest strap option.

Sir, you are singing a beautiful song! I have wished for this for a year! I really hope it happens. I don't see the harm in adding Commodore as a title. I recently looked at the list of title options and cringed at some of them. Commodore would definitely "class" up that list! :)

title i can agree with, rank insignia as well...but as a game rank, i cant agree since it would create a whole new world...and too many changes to make at this time.

the rest i would like to see as well...but all in time..

Oh, I agree about adding it as a rank. That would be problematic.

But tossing it in with the TOS pack would work for me, particularly with the TOS dress uniforms being in there.

I'd love to have Commodore as my title. It sounds more awesome than most of the available titles.

looking into this. depends on if commodore is already reserved for something else, but if not there is a possibility.

With that could we also get the title Fleet Captain?

give an inch, and they want a yard....let us get the COMM title first and then work on the FLTCPT...k?

It would be pretty nifty to have some kind of TOS title tossed in if Commodore is being saved.

Fleet Captain and Commodore were both TOS-only ranks that would make for a nice title.

One other thought would be a set of themed TOS titles:
    Commodore
    Fleet Captain
    Technician
    Yeoman
    Midshipman

All were titles exclusive to TOS and the TOS-era films and were retired by TNG. I'm just tossing them all out if Commodore is taken.

"Old Country Doctor" has been a title I've wanted to see but it probably works better as an accolade title.

And if you wanted to make people scratch their heads, you could throw in "Captain Dunsel". A dunsel is 23rd century slang for a useless ship part and Kirk was called "Captain Dunsel" in "The Ultimate Computer" as an insult to imply he was obsolete.

I think one would be awesome. Just throwing some options out.

I completely disagree, if I have to spend how ever much they're gonna ask (1,200+) for this TOS pack, I would rather see them get it all in now and not have to ask down the road and maybe never see it added. Right now the pack is not available, Dan has shown interest in looking into this. Perhaps while his attention is here, maybe now would be the best time to bring this up...not down the road.

Oh... And I suppose I can be somewhat brusque but I do want to thank dstahl for dropping by this (and so many other) threads to consider these suggestions today.

Why? The justification for both is the same. It's barely even asking for two inches, especially since the game isn't even set up to make it appear in dialogue.

I really hope there's something worked out with the current TOS pack. I mean, if we have the regular TOS uniforms already, we ought to get the dress versions or Kirk's wraparound regardless. I can see paying more for a bridge/interior, but not uniforms - especially Kirk's wraparound.

I agree that all uniform sets (dress and green tunic) should be given to anyone that already has TOS uniform pack. But like you said, any title, interior, emotes or gadgets that might be added should stay with the new pack.

Ehh, idunno. That might be a bit much. The TOS dress unis represent a similar amount of work to the existing TOS unis.

On the other hand, if the TOS unis will be part of the TOS bundle pack, a limited-time discount for prior owners on the whole pack would be apprioriate, I think.

Would make me more likely to grab it.

Personally, I would like to see Commodore completely replace Rear Admiral Lower Half. It is a mouthful, and I feel like the npcs are making fun of me every time they use my full title: "Thank you Rear Admiral, Lower Half..." Then the Upper Half title can be just Rear Admiral.

But that might be more work than just adding it in as an additional title, and I would rather them use their time on better things than replacing titles.

I completely agree. Reading "Read Admiral, Lower Half" all the time feels clunky. Even if it was a canon rank (which It may be??) people would never use it in everyday conversation. O'Brien was "Chief" not "Chief Petty Officer" and I'm not certain anyone was addressed as "Lieutenant, Junior Grade" except maybe during introductions. I think the same would apply for RA Lower/Upper Half titles in conversation.

Personally, I wish Admiral rank NPC's would address us by our first names once we reach RA. In Star Trek, many of the Admiralty and even Captains were on a first-name basis. That being said, I know it's a lot of work for a small thing and will never happen. I just always thought it would be a nice touch.

As starfleet ranks are based on navy ranks, the "commodore" title was used in TOS because that was the official title for a 1 star admiral until the early 80s. They switched to lower/upper half because many 1 star admirals wanted to be recognized as admirals and not as a unique rank. This is because when addressing any rank of admiral, you address them as "admiral," whether they have 1 star or 4 stars, not their full title. Its an ego thing...

You address ensigns as ensigns, but both LTJGs and LTs are addressed "Lieutenant." Likewise, a LtCdr and Cdrs are both addressed as "commander" and captains are in fact, captains. It would be cool to have a "commodore" rank but they don't use it in any of the new series episodes because its outdated.

I must also point out that admiral Quinn should be the only fleet admiral. There is historically only 1 5-star admiral in a fleet. When we get a level cap increase, level 61 should only be "admiral."

sorry to rain on the dance party - but it looks like we've reserved commodore for a future feature related to Fleets and Starbases. :\ so it is coming - just not as soon as this thread suggested.

It just wasn't used... there's little canon info to suggest it was phased out. The US navy did stop using it by TNG's time, so the show stopped as well. However, there is an image in this thread: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=200795 that shows some production notes with the rank of commodore.

Am a army kid so i know these thing. the rank of commodore should be a fleet rank only since the "title" of Commodore continues to be used in the U.S. Navy for those senior Captains in command of organizations consisting of groups of ships or submarines organized into squadrons, air wings or air groups of aviation squadrons other than carrier air wings, special warfare (SEAL) groups, and construction battalion (SeaBee) regiments. Although not Flag Officers, modern day Commodores in the U.S. Navy rate a blue and white command pennant that is normally flown at their headquarters facilities ashore or from ships they are embarked aboard.
