Duty Roster-Ships, BOFFs and Crew

All the discussion going on about the crew system (Duty Roster) and the new ships being introduced into STO and how they play out versus other ship models and particularly the Tier 1 vs. Tier 5 questions has led me to think hard as to how ships and our BOffs should function with the Duty Roster.

Here is a "radical idea" for you all to ponder. There are only two key elements in game play with the player, the captain and the ship! Away teams aside the captain is the only ground character that is a constant as is the ship in space! So what if you did away with the current concept of Bridge Officers (BOffs) and revamp ships.

Bridge stations have been outlined in many references so it should not be hard to assign those stations to the bridge crew functionality.
http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Bridge
The Bridge would be laid out with the stations as they currently are in game except they are not tied to one BOff. Instead they are a function of the ship! The crew improves the ship abilities similarly to how BOffs currently function. (i.e. BOff skill = skill improvement) You would be able to set up a primary and secondary function for the stations. EVERY ship gets all 5 stations (except BoP and Vo'Quv) as is the current build. Primary Functions would be the same as what are offered to T5 ships. (i.e. a fleet escort has Cmd and LtC Tac, Lt Eng and Sci and Ens Eng) The Secondary Functions allow you to slip in a varient. So I could replace the Tac LtC with an Eng.

As the Captain you have your own skills to help improve your ships capabilities and your 1st Officer would have similar functions related to their study (tac, eng or sci.) Then also on the bridge you have department heads to fill other roles. Those departments have team members all assisting in different abilities on your ship.

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz58/Tragamite/Crew%20System/TacticalCrew.jpg

You receive Crew Candidates the same way you currently do BOffs in that respect they are the same. Your away teams would use kits instead of BOffs ground skills. You can access your crew manifest and assign equipment to your crew members as you see fit. (This is particularly for Away Missions)

You would then be able to utilize any ship at any level however a Tier 1 is still a Tier 1 the only difference is the ships abilities but weapons and consoles are still the same.

This is closer to what I suggested for a duty roster originally!

It will still not have all the capabilities of a T5 so it would still struggle but it would probably stand a better chance.

Uh, read that again. Your T1 would have less consoles to assign crew to than a T5. This does nothing to make a T1 ship competitive at T5.

I like the idea as proposed a lot.

Exactly but this isn't about T1 it is about the duty roster.

So the plan is to hold off of the modifying of the BOffs and Chief Heads and do a crew system again.

With Stahl saying the crew will be another paper doll to fill up like the gear that we use on our ships or characters I'm wondering where and how we will acquire the crew. Will they simply come with the ship and we will just have to manage the placement and prduction? How will we be able to manipulate the crew to perform what we ask of them?

There is so much talk of what they will do but not how. And how will the management Boffs affect the workers Doffs? Should be exciting to see how this system will grow.

They've already said you'd receive a "shuttle" (read: pop-up window) of candidates sporadically in the game (ie, similar to, or replacing, most of the current BOff rewards we get as we level up), or we can "request" a shuttle of candidates, although details of the request have not been filled in.

    wait, so...

You can change a normal primary assignment into something else? A Fleet Escort with an Eng LtC slot?

I see potential imbalancing right there, and would create chaos on a level not seen since NGE with SWG (yes, I went there), but has the potential to finally detatch the 100%-to-role ships currently have. It would mean that Science ships can finally use AP: Omega, or Assault Cruisers finally being assaulty with higher tac slots, etc.

Very radical. The rest, however, I totally support.

Well the mockups are a demonstration of what could be, but yes it is radical, but then Stahl said they were thinking radically about how this would change things.

But the Primary format and secondary format would ally you some changes to ship functions but still be "locked" in a sense to the role of the ship. The biggest part about this design would be that you have a quick switch or swapout of your Boffs without having to rearrange your abilities.

Additionally it won't imbalance things if all ships have the same capabilities. To add type of ship would restrict the comander skills but any of the other slots could be manipulated.
