There has been a spate of zombies around here lately. I would like to recommend the following to the Cryptic STO forum gurus:
An automated rule where, if a thread has not been replied to in a certain amount of time (say, three months) and the thread is not flagged to stay open (an option for moderators and Cryptic employees ONLY) the thread auto closes.
I'm not sure about vbulletin, but I know IPB has a feature that does that automatically. Any topic that doesn't get replies in x amount of time is automatically locked and/or deleted.
I'll BBQ the chicken. You open the rum, and pass the cigars.
(Roach wanders off with a heavy flamer to start the BBQ)
Snap, I'm on rum duty. Oh woe-is-me.
(RIps out cork with teeth- slams back a hit)
Ok, this one is still good.
(grabs next bottle)
So is this one.

If by rule you mean as in Forum Rules: It already is against the rules. Doing so can earn you a "Spam" warning/infraction.
If you rule you mean coding; I am not sure we currently have such an option available.
However, as this seems to be an increasing problem, I'll just get out the moderator stick and instead of simply closing will have to enforce the rules stronger. Not ideal, but this is a fad which will end after the first big stack of points that never expire were gathered.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what I found was;
Flaming, Trolling, Spamming
Posts and/or private messages that, in any manner whether directly or indirectly, involve any of the following activities may be subject to an infraction.
* Excessive communications of the same phrase, similar phrases, or gibberish.
* Creation of undue discontent on the forums.
* Creation of disturbances in forum threads, such as picking fights, making off topic posts that derail the thread, insulting other posters, etc.
* Posting non-constructive comments.
* Abusing the Report Post button by sending false alarms or nonsensical messages.
* Numbering of a thread, IBTL, TLDR, etc. * Bumping threads.
* Creation of First! posts.
* Posting of off-topic comments.
Creating Duplicate Threads
Posts and/or private messages that, in any manner whether directly or indirectly, create new threads about existing topics or separate threads about an existing topic for further discussion in more than one forum (e.g., cross postings) may be subject to an infraction.
These two seem to be the proverbial "rock and a hard place". If I post in a old thread I'm bumping, but if I make a new one I'm duplicating? There must be a hard cut-off, after which the second rule is not activated, but I can't seem to find a number. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place?
I don't know...reviewing that "OMG Imma sue Crytpic waaah!" thread had me ROFL all over again.
We need to archive some of the most ridiculous flame threads in some forum so people can get some perspective on the kind of open warfare this game has come through on these forums.
If you rule you mean coding; I am not sure we currently have such an option available.
I believe the OP was referring to this version. You may want to chat with the web team to see if their is a forum mod available that will auto-close threads that have not had new posts for X days.
The forum rules should also be updated to specifically discuss necro threads as I made the same mistake when I first joined and this is the only forum where thread necromancy is against the rules (most other forums encourage necromancy and take the "search before posting" stance as it keeps the entire discussion together).

I agree that those two rules seem contradictory. They don't want us posting multiple threads about the same topics, but then they tell us to create new threads instead of posting in old ones (mostly in the case of technical issues).
One of my topics was recently necro'd and closed (which I don't mind b/c the topic became irrelevant about 3 months after it was posted last year), but what IF for some reason it becomes relevant again via the constant changes this game goes through? Would I get infractions for making another thread on the same topic? If the thread wasn't closed, would I get infractions for posting in an old topic that fell out of relevancy but then became relevant again? Is there some sort of tactical necromancy going on here where they're necro'ing old topics on purpose to get them closed out and we can't reopen them again even in another thread?
As someone who moderates on another forum with the 'no necro' rule, our general view is 'if the thread is over several months old, it's time to start a new one'. I've found the cut-off time varies from forum to forum.
If I have any questions about whether to necro or start a new thread, and the thread is old, I'll start a new thread. Then, at the bottom of the post, I'll ask the moderating team to please merge the post into the older thread if they feel it's more appropriate for it to be there. That way, they don't get their shorts in knots.
However, as this seems to be an increasing problem, I'll just get out the moderator stick and instead of simply closing will have to enforce the rules stronger. Not ideal, but this is a fad which will end after the first big stack of points that never expire were gathered.
What's funny is that, like the moon, it goes in cycles.
And it's going to keep happening because you guys don't infract people for doing this. I know because I bookmark this stuff and the small group of people who are responsible never get banned for it.
I find it especially amusing that the person directly responsible for today's round of thread Necroing has posted in this thread. Watch him not get banned, that's how you'll know he didn't get infracted for it.
You say that as if banning is the absolute ONLY thing we do.
Truth is: You do not know, which is a good thing. Because just as we do not talk about other posters; we would not talk about your track record, either. It would go against policy to do so.
A ban from the forums only happens if one has gathered a number of infractions, breaks a bigger rule or indeed does something very harmful.
While letting zombies loose could potentually be very harmful, thankfully these are limited to the interwebs and their bite will not directly harm any one poster in most cases.
You say that as if banning is the absolute ONLY thing we do.
The Star Trek Online forums are a wretched hive of scum and trollery because you guys don't ban the people that regularly break the rules.
And the truth is that I do know. One because the person who NECROd six separate threads today is not banned. Had he received an infraction point for each thread he NECROd then he would be banned, at least temporarily.
Secondly, I do know because I personally have received a number of warnings myself lately instead of receiving infraction points.
You see I know how your system works. It's explained in great detail right here.

There are ways of introducing an old post's conversation into a new format. Same thing we do in college writing papers, just form the old words into new ones, meaning our own. This ofcouse happens after fully understanding the topic at hand.
There has to be both a compelling reason to do so AND a statement of why it is being done before that can be taken at face value. More bluntly , if you are going to bring up something old -- whether by necro or making a new post -- you had better have a reason AND new information to add.
I find it difficult to find any reason why any of the threads resurrected today needed to be seen again. None of them brought constructive ideas to the conversation.

You can mention me by name. Everyone knows who did it. They've already sent me messages regarding the issue.
Is everyone forgetting I'm new here? It wasn't my intention to break the rules. Actually, I didn't read the rules before posting. However, I was careless to not pay attention to the dates of the last post or how old the post was. I already apologized to the mod and said it wouldn't happen again.
Since there really wasn't any bad intentions, I don't see why everyone can't just let it go.
We were all noobs once, and I happen to be one right now. Don't new people deserve a chance to get warned, before you ban them? I mean not all users are malicious in nature, in this kind of situation. :rolleyes:

Hey man welcome to the forum (and the game!)
Don't sweat this stuff, now you know
And some people just love to find new things to badger Cryptic about, just ignore them.
What's funny is that, like the moon, it goes in cycles.

Your "nobody ever gets banned" broken record is funnier today, since I see somebody else's 7-day ban expired today.
It's too bad those "If Star Trek were like STO" threads got closed. They were really funny, and maybe bumping them would get the author to write the theoretical third chapter...

Welcome to STO and its friendly forums, Daemonrebel!!
Actually the forums round here kinda kick TRIBBLE im my opinion. The Devs interact and listen for the most part...
And the community usually pretty friendly.
Props for sticking your name out there and apologizing... but dude theres so much worse said on these forums, it will blow over in no time! Hell, I'm still a "forum noob"... like what the hell does Trolling mean or "Necro'd" ? I don't even know so if i tick anyone off my apologies in advanced!
You guys read into the rules too much and think that the mods have no common sense... The mods are regular people like the rest of us, they are not mindless automatons that follow strict programming language "If statements" based on the exact wording of the rules.
Your gonna get nailed for opening new threads on topics that were
A. Closed by a mod, common guys they were closed for a reason...
B. Repeatedly opening threads about sore subjects...
Your gonna get nailed for bringing up necro'd topics if they are clearly out of date. Posting in a thread titled..."RSP is overpowered" should get you an infraction.. It got nerfed, so its not overpowered anymore. There is nothing of value to add. If you have new comments that are useful and new thread would be ideal, one with supporting thoughts that doesn't insult Cryptic inside the first three sentences.
Guide to not getting infractions:
A. Don't be a jerk.... surprisingly difficult for some.
B. When you create a new thread or bring up an old topic that is not quite necro'ed.... having something like... Cryptic or DStahl <insert negative comment here> is probably not a good idea...
C. If you make a new thread because the old one is questionably necro'ed... reference it, make it clear that you know it exists and that you feel it's necro'ed, and most of all... state if you feel it is still relevant or not so others will know if the situation has changed or if they should read it as well. This will let others know that you have put some thought into it and your not out to be a pain in the bottom.
I had merely thought that such a rule would remove the temptation and the ability to accidentally bump threads that are beyond their freshness date. No offense was intended.
