Given the hours spent in the game tune a ones build. Is it too much to ask that cryptic issue a retrain token to players when they have adjusted a power, or change the mechanic on which the power operates?
I mean why should i have to grind for merits for hours on end to get 30,000, or shell out cash every time i need to respec because of a patch, its just common courtesy. Warhammar online has this policy of refunding ones spec points after a major patch that affected a char class.
Any way what is the community thoughts on the matter ?
So, yeah...major power or skill changes should come with a respec token. So far, I've yet to see an overhaul of the skills or powers which would be worthy of this. If there is a broad change to how skills are acquired or assigned (dividing ground and space, or changing how the pilot skills are available) then I could see it being appropriate. If there is a major overhaul to one or more combat system which would require most players to "rethink" their builds, I could also see it.
Tweaks and changes to one or two skills or powers, however, are too narrow to really justify this.

well fire at will is getting nerfed , The damage from duel beam banks is reduced that it will probably end up breaking duel beam bank escorts builds? If you did not put any points in cannons should you have to pay to respec to something else? Most players at the end game spend many hours gearing and tighten up there builds. Usefully in the process burning their respic tokens from leveling, Only to have it ruined by a patch. Just as the sci toon players at the start of the game who spec to use viral matrix. Viral matrix was changed to make it almost unusable in pvp.
Everyone who lvled up at the start didnt get the nice little respecs at the various level ups....and VM was FAR too powerfull, Im amazed they released it the way they did, Its not bad now...but it didnt just effect sci captians, what about people who set up a build to defend against VM now I have to change around my BO cause they use something els!
As far as the OP thread goes I say NO! we have tokens when when we level up, sure end gamers dont get them as they are not leveling, However I think they should be able to get them in exchange for emblems or something
This is what they do in Cryptic's first MMO, City of Heroes.
It takes a lot of the sting out of having your favorite power nerfed/changed if you don't also have to pay money to change your build to compensate for it.
It also prevents those forum rage threads wherein people speculate that Cryptic is changing powers/abilities for the sole purpose of making money from selling respecs.
A token may not be appropriate because this affects one power, and the skills associated with it. It would not be right, for instance, for my Tac/Cruiser Capt, who does not use Gravity Well, to get such a token. It would also not be right to give tokens out to only those who have a Gravity Well build (and just how do you prove that, anyways)?
This is the major flaw in having a respec path that is acquired through the expenditure of real world money. Frankly, respecs should be available only in-game, and should cost 1/10th the points that they do now. That's just my opinion, however.
Probably (although the change to FAW is not a Nerf, it's a fix). I'd be more interested in some kind of compensation for the amount of time spent waiting in PVP queues for NoPossibleMaps. No rush though.
The BFAW thing was a bugfix, so I kinda see that that might not warrant a respec token.
But - Science Vessels, Carriers and several powers or weapons were changed, some not inconsiderably so. That would certainly require some people to respec (and even if just to ditch heir current ship choice in a typical overreaction.)
See this goes right along with changing in-game pricing of Ships with little of no warning! They recently changed the Nebula from 200-500 Marks... more than double, he barely gave a week AND NEVER said when it would happen... I get screwed -20 marks away from getting it the day they changed it.
Point is I don't think they think about or consider the player's time spent in playing the game as was before they go making changes given the Devs dont get to play as "players". I was ****ed after the Nebula thing and I can understand why people would be angry over the skill changes.... People put a lot of time into fine-tuning their setup based on the Skill Specs at the time. So now we lose not only lots of time but all those Merits/Honor to respec. There should be some sort of re-comp?
They should just lower the cost of respecs to something more reasonable and not try to make money off it. Why do they not want us to respec so bad anyway? With such poor descriptions of what skills do for powers respecing happens more than it should. Yes you can go back and forth to tribble to test builds, but that is a pain. I like how champions gives you a room to test you skills before your respec is set in stone. Limiting respecs ruins a customization part of the game.
Maybe it is done already, but please can you give us a free respec token when you make significant changes to the balance of the game? Such as you did with the recent changes? Anyone who pvp would know.
I worked it out it seems respecing cost you about $5 US a shot if you buy it from the C store, Its about 80 points to a dollar. Its also seem that there a many threads call for respec with the up coming changes to various powers.

By all means, totally. I think every time they change something that effects their character build, in a major, inevitably noticeable way, then we should get to respec for free.
Wait so we dont get free respecs when they make changes to our powers? I thought it worked like
champions. I figured we got them I could just never tell because I couldn't find the damn how many respecs do you have left counter. If we dont already get a free respec when they make changes to our powers then we should.
Something else Id really love to see is a respec room or whatever you call it were you could test your powers out before you lock them in like the power room in co. just call it a holideck and stick the trainer in it with a console to cue up a small assortment of ground and space missions and the point lock lock in when you leave the room.
When it was only an in-game matter, and not purchaseable by energy credits, I would have said no. Earn the 30,000 merits/honor and take respecs as mana from heaven. Once they started charging real cash for respecs, it brings a closer look at their ethics. All of a sudden, the repsec has real world value. When they swing the nerf bat around ,,,no matter what the reason, it MUST be examined from an ethical standpoint. Is this a ploy to boost quarterly profits? The problem with introducing an ethical viewpoint on their actions is that peoples opinion will vary wildly. While it was JUST IN GAME, there was no confusion.
Now, I think any swing of the nerf bat that breaks a build should get a respec, just to maintain the ethical high ground and avoid any appearance of bad company behavior.
I'm going to quote myself from another post which came up on this very topic not more than a few minutes ago:
..... couldnt find his original post, but I think its the easiest way to make all parties happy. Lower the cost of respec tokens all the way around... in-game/c-store..
I can see how offering a respec token anytime a change is made is severely flawed, but there should be some kind of middle ground?

agreed ... IMHO respec "points" should be allowed to be earned ... some how. The game has and will continue to change. Special abilities will continue to be nerfed as other players ciontinue to complain about "balance issues".
That said, keep it simple, offer tokens that can be earned, not sold. This saves a lot of headaches for everyone.

Yes, I think cryptic should give free respec tokens when there is a major change. Mainly because it will take more than one respec to adjust to the "new" way of doing things. It gets costly to have to purchase them all the time.

Get you some respect, yo!

There has not been any major changes in skills so far.
You dont need to buy respects with atari points.
Use MERITS to respect.
At vice admiral it costs you 30k MERITS to respect.
I have paid this 4 times already to test different builds.
Its easy toget merit.
Go buy the respect from the Cstore if you are time challanged otherwise its a non issue.
