I was just wondering what you use commodities for?

    Commodities are used for Aid the Planet missions in the various Exploration zones around the game. Different planets need different things and if you give them it they'll give you a special item for helping them out.

    Also, Entertainment Provisions and Self-sealing Stembolts are used in the "Temple Offerings" mission.

    Medical Supplies can be used to slightly simplify the Sh'mar daily in Eta Eridani. (Whether or not it is desirable to do so is a different issue.)

    Because of the various Aid Missions and such, I usually keep one of each Commodity on-hand. You can replicated them in space.

    You can keep commodities stored in your bank and they will still show up for 'aid the planet' missions. If you buy them in space you will have to pay a heavy premium; there are vendors dotted around who will sell you different commodities depending on your location.

    also the cargo ships in the sirius sector sell all of the items, not just the area specific ones.

    Does anyone have a list of what Items are in demand in what area? The list from each of the representatives in the game is incomplete. Provisions and shield Generators are both used in Delta Voranis, but the Representative at ESD only reports them needing Shield Generators.

    Actually Broker Hosa does tell you what you need for the Exploration zones in his area: he tells you what you'll need in DV, AA, and HC. The brokers in SB 39 and DS9 will also list out what the zones in their areas need.

    Ya, and that would be a concern for a beginner. But once you've been picking up enough equipment you don't need and sell it, you build up a pretty good bank account. Eventually, paying for those items in space by replicating them is not a concern.
