This is purely speculation but I put a SPOILER warning, just in case
Daily missions in the neutral zone involve True Way members, the "special" repeatable mission where you need 10 computer fragments leads to a true way operation commandeering star fleet/kdf ships. I would say that it's pretty safe to assume who the next bunch of baddies will be.
if there is an iconian series i dont think it will be them alone, more a slow reveal with them appearing in the background pulling the strings. i suspect any series with them in, will be in romulan space and will feature our pointed eared enemies.
i think its too early for a one on one with the iconians.

Good point, the first Iconian ship we all encountered did take our shields down quite fast with a single shot. It'd make them a difficult foe to defeat
I have a feeling it's going to be a lot like the episode itself: you encounter a lost Iconian outpost and probe. Your ship gets infected. You beam down and get stuck in an Iconian portal of some sort. Work your way out of that and save your ship.
Iconians behind the Undine Invasion, the destruction of Romulus (was it ever revealed who were the higher powers that Praetor Taris was working with/for?), and other significant happenings in the timeline towards a restoration as their civilization as the dominant race would be awesome.

"Dread lords," I take to mean Iconians. No other race really fits the description
I hope in this process of a new enemy + old enemies = new zones and really....a better galaxy map for the game to see other sectors depicting (i.e boundaries of Tholia in the future seasons).
Though in the TNG series and TOS, Iconia is between the neutral zone (or more in Romulan space) sandwiched between pi canis/ Psi Velorum sectors....
Maybe the Rom's and the Iconians will ally themselves with each other
Highly unlikely considering the Iconians are the primary antagonists in STO and the Romulans are intended to be the next playable faction. Plus, considering their attitude in that one mission you encounter them, they likely consider every species below them, Romulans included.
I would really like to see some Rom episodes again. Hopefully.
Sorry. I saw your avatar when I read the word "Rom" and I immediately thought "Why? I hope he's dead by now! He probably ruined Ferenginar permanently."

and there was meant to be a fed splinter faction so cardassians using fed ships perhaps could happen.
the plot thickens.
but i would not go as far as to say its safe to assume just yet.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS, finally. More from the Iconians, it's been a long time coming.
200'000 years or so my watch.
(its a good watch)
