This is an idea I'd like to pose to the developers as a way to make the game more fun (and profitable for Cryptic):
First off, we have a lot of ships. Why else would I buy more ship slots if I was never going to use them? The main reason I don't use them often is because it frequently messes up the powers presets and I have to move the bridge officers around. If there was a way to save these settings so they didn't get scrambled each time, then I could buy a new ship (say, Galaxy-X, Excelsior, Nebula, or freebie in game) and go try it out without having to screenshot and spend several minutes getting it back to the way it was.
If people could switch ships with configurations intact, then it'd be as hasslefree as switching to a different weapon and make people want to try out more ships (and more than likely increase demand in the ships in the C Store which could yield some serious coin for the company). Win-win all around.
This is the reason that I do not purchase addition ship slots or ships from the C-Store. As much as I love starships, it is just too much of a pain to switch back and forth. I even have my trasnwarp powers getting removed from the tray when I go back and forth between my 2 characters!
For me additional ships are best for RP. There is always going to be one ship that I feel is best for combat, the others are just fun to switch to and tool around for a bit or meet friends. The fun rapidly disappears when all your abilities are messed up.
I fully support being able to save a ship's BOFF/power configuration. It would remove a huge detracting reason for not switching ships..I don't want to have to reassign everything just because I want to take my runabout out for a spin.
Type the first command in the configuration you want to save. Go to your alt or other ship and type the second command. Enter both in the chat text box and click the enter key.
P.S. I think the reason you're not getting answers is because you're waiting for someone to tell you. All this information is out there to be found. Search for it. Use Google.
The real pain I've been ticked off about is this whole respec thing.
Each time I want to switch a ship not only do my BO's and skill panels have to be re-arranged but I also have to go visit the respec toon.
Seriously, why do we need 4 different pilot skills for cruisers?
This is just rediculous.
There should be one cruiser skill, one escort skill, one science ship skill.
If I want to switch from my Star CRUISER to my Assault CRUISER, I have to go respec.
If I want to park my Refit CRUISER and pull out my Dreadnaught CRUISER, I have to go respec.
Same thing if you want to jump in your Fleet ESCORT from your Advanced ESCORT.
The variety of ships available does wonders for playability, but the way the skills are set up make it a serious pain, and seem to be nothing more then a greedy money-grab to sell respec tokens.
I would expect this sort of thing from a 'free to play' type game, but I'm a PAYING SUBSCRIBER.

It's great that this is option is there, but what percent of the player base is actually aware of it? Maybe one percent? In order to maximize the playability, fun (and C Store profit) then this needs to have this in the game so that it's 1) clearly labeled, 2) easy to use, and 3) widely known.
Took them awhile to implement in CoH/CoV but the allowed you 2 different builds of your character and you could swap them out as needed. Can't imagine them not doing it for STO and in fact my question would be if the tech is there in another of the games they developed why wouldn't they implement it in STO already.
What would be really nice would be if they would keep BO powers from flying all over the bar every time you switch one out... then again, that used to work for kits and ground device slots but doesn't anymore, so I guess I shouldn't be holding my breath.
The save_bind_file thing only saves your keybinds and a few other things, doesn't it? When I turned my shuttle in after running the Vault, I picked up my cruiser and went into PvP. To my surprise, I started the match with none of my bridge officers in any of their stations, and their skills missing from my toolbar.
I agree with the OP. This, and the fact I would have to respec, are the main reasons I feel stuck to one ship.
I was looking forward to my 400 day award - only a few days more - of the Captain's Yacht. If it requires me to reassign BOs every time I use it, I probably won't.
Everyone has been bring this up since beta.
This and the toolbar mixup are all apart of the Same problem.
The toolbars are saved to a database on cryptics servers and the database isn't very accommodating (and is affected by lag which is the randomness problem)
The solution is to have it saved to a text file on you computer and although this would mean you would have to either port or remake the file each Pc, it would fix this.
But since cryptic has never responded to these threads (and there has been hundreds) gives me the impression that an attempt to fix this would be time consuming break everything since it is apart of the core engine.
This is a bit of thread necro, but I was on the first page, so maybe it's fair.
This is still a significant problem. CO seems to completely avoid this problem and even goes so far as to allow you to save tool bar (and even equipment) setups and swap them on the fly.
Until we get some positive fixes for these issues, I'm cooling my heels on new ship purchases. I have more ships than I will ever use, due to the pain in changing.

I appreciate the necro of this thread, and it is a little unfair to draw a comparison to CO since STO has a lot more config information that has to be stored on the backend per character, per ship, per account.
We have been working to fix minor issues related to this (such as your power bar now resuming your last known config so long as you map move between changing ships).
Saving BOFF config is something we could add as a feature down the line when we get some significant software dev time. As it is, we are still looking for more software developers to join our team. (See the Cryptic Careers page if you or someone you know is interested).
I really do recognize that STO is leaps and bounds more complicated than CO in many areas. I was just hoping that there may have been some tech or ideas to leverage over here at STO.
I am looking forward to the day when our Admirals can change ships based on mission or whim. Maybe they are not assigned to one specific ship, but attach themselves to other ships as we saw them in the shows. Customizable interiors, power tray fixes, and other things can help make the ships feel and play differently while making you actually want to change from time to time. The only real barrier would then be skills.
I'm a sucker for having a garage full of ships. One day I'd like to use them.

impressive. this is the first comment you have ever had on this subject.
I thank you. you have to realize that this is the reason why people don't use more than one ships. too much work

Counts main's ship list.. hmmm.. 13.. Guess it's just me then??

i would very much appreciate these features. its not a big deal since i can just go back and adjust it, but it does feel like a little hiccup in the game currently.

I agree .. when changing to a simple shuttle .. then back .. all previous settings are gone ! IMHO being able to "save settings" before changing ships helps to keep BOffs and crew with their respective skills would also keep hot key and other items where they belong.
The jist of my idea is to think of it as saving a profile: when I pick which ship I'm selecting to use, I want the previous bridge officers I had assigned it, with the previous power tray.
From dstahl's comments and my experience, it looks like we can retrain our old power tray if we assign the bridge officers exactly as they were before -- a small step in the right direction.
Closely related and what would be a *major* improvement: full customization of the power tray so that we can have at least 10 buttons per row (instead of 8) and more than 1-3 rows. Months ago I heard this was being worked on but haven't read any updates since then.

Hell, I'd go so far as to train a crew and leave them on each ship if that's what it took.
I own lots of ships and I'd buy more (if not for having to futz with re-doing my hotkeys).
SAVE:
/bind_save_file "default-presets.txt"
LOAD:
/bind_load_file "default-presets.txt"

Something I suggested along these lines sort of.

I am interested but alas, I have absolutely 0 software development knowledge. So, I must remain on the outside looking in.
