*New* Second Dr Otto STO Research Survey

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hello,

This is the SECOND online survey/questionnaire, Post Release of STO...

My name is Dr. Richard Otto and I am a professor in the Media Communication and Technology department of East Stroudsburg University, PA, USA.

The MCOM website is:
http://www4.esu.edu/academics/majors2/programs/mcom/faculty.cfm

I am conducting research about how Star Trek Online players perceive their interactions within STO, at present and in the future. The first phase of this research is in the form of online surveys/questionnaires, with interviews to be conducted in the future.

I have the permission of CBS, and Cryptic Studios to conduct this research; however, I do not work for either CBS or Cryptic Studios, in any capacity.

The overall plan is to publish the results of this research in various forms, such as academic papers, as well as potentially in book form.

The results will also eventually be shared with CBS and Cryptic, however, any and all material that potentially identifies the identity of a research participant will be removed prior to any and all forms of dissemination.

All participants must be 18 years or older.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me rotto@po-box.esu.edu or the East Stroudsburg University Institutional Review Board Administrator, Dr. Shala Davis sdavis@po-box.esu.edu or 570 422 (three, three, three, six)

If you wish to participate, please click on the link below, otherwise, have a great day!

    Hey Doc,

Filled out the previous form and this one as well. As someone who conducts human subjects research myself, I totally understand the hoops you have to jump through and always like to support my fellow researchers. Especially when you're up against potential participants like this...

Best wishes with your research, hope you get some publications out of it :D

PS. You should make the free-comments text entry boxes bigger on the surveys. It's discouraging to have so much to say and such a tiny space to work with. I've definitely found in my own work that providing bigger blanks to fill yields more verbose responses (if that's something you want)...

Another thought-provoking survey, especially in the light of the ups-and-downs the STO community has endured since the last one.

Good luck with your research! (again)

My Spidey Sense is tingling, but I filled out the survey anyway. :P

I really didn't think I'd like it because, as one person has written, I feel it may be a scheme by Cryptic to get an "easy" fix for their game.

Having filled it out, I would suggest to them to re-evaluate their decision. I found it very theraputic to be able to respond in a comprehensive and detailed manner regarding my thoughs about this game and it's producer and feeling someone might actually read it without thinking that it's just flamebait.

"Easy fix" or not, at least if you are apprpriate with answers, someone is listening. My voices are already jealous and not speaking to me now :D

Not saying your wrong, nor am I sure why your worried? So what if it is cryptic getting feed back? That's a good thing surely?

But I would point out the Gentleman has provided more than enough material for to enable anyone to do some serious checking that could blow this wide open if it was false. Simple test one: Check with the governing body, using a phone number obtained elsewhere.
Simple test two: See if the Doctor's name appears at the instution he mentions. Again use information other than what he has provided.

I don't believe it is fake (and see my opening points RE: So what if it is?), so I'll get to the form tonight when work gets quiet.

Good luck in your work Doc.

To be fair, commissioning a survey to be done is not "easy" at all. Infact, it's probably the best way of gathering information like this. Actually designing a survey is a very scientific (and expensive) process and is very tricky to do. Only an expert in the field could build a proper survey.

It's certainly better than reading a thousand opinions on the forums.

Erm, exactly where did you disagree with me? I answered the questions and urged the non-answerer to re-evaluate their decision. In no way did I express that the OP weren't who they said they were either.

A: "Spidey Sense" was a pun based on the gentleman's name.
B: He could very well be being paid by Cryptic to do this study. (I had already verified who he was)
C: READ my post again. I had already pointed out that is was good to be answering.

    Hello,

Just to be clear...I don't work for Cryptic or CBS, I work for East Stroudsburg University.

I have the permission of both CBS and Cryptic to perform my research.

I do share information with Cryptic, but that is voluntary, not because of any employment.

    Thanks for your time,

    Dr. Otto

As to the size of the reply boxes, unfortunately I am kinda locked into the size available, but dont let that stop you from adding as much as you want, the system saves it all :)

    Thanks again,

    Dr. Otto

    Hello,

Thanks for taking the time, and yes, I am who I say I am, you can click on the link in the opening message, and that takes you to our department website.

    Luck and fun,

    Hello,

As to B, sadly no... no pay, no cryptic points, no galaxy class with cloak, the cannon from Admiral Rikers All Good Things episode, and the turn rate of a butterfly (but Im still hopeful for that) :)

    Have a great day,

    Dr. Otto

    Hey Doc,

Just spent the better part of a hour and a half filling survey #2 out. Solid and well thought out, just like last time.
I hope some of the ramblings in my comments help.

While I had planned on replying to tarjan's "comment", after seeing Kreen's "comments" as well, I figured I'd comment on part of what the Doc was asking on: Community.

Here is a professional doing above-board research. He's had to go through who knows what just to make sure he can do this with out getting into any kind of legal trouble. And while the majority of the replys have been positive, there are players who think this is just another idiotic attempt by Cryptic/Atari Marketing or want something else in return. It just urks me to see those kind of responses.

I usually tend to lurk than post, but overall it is because of the negative feelings I see on the boards that make me wonder if the game is worth enjoying. I don't expect everything nice and friendly, but going all the way back to Closed Beta, I've seen the boards being more toxic than anything else. I've seen better and more civil discussions on the STO thread in the City of Heroes forums than I have seen in a number of the boards here.
Is it getting better? I think so, but it's hard to say.

    Sorry for the ramble.

    Thank you for the time...

    Hello,

I am still conducting my research, so I haven't published any results. I will publish when the research is concluded, and I will provide access to the results in published forms (wherever that may be) and here on this forum.

    Have a great day,

Otto, you're awesome and I apologize for my earlier Marvel Universe pun of your name. The questionaire wa well thought and allowed for lengthy explainations when, however seldom, the most appropriate answer wasn't listed. Thanks for the chance to voice my experience/concerns.

This is the attitude that lowers the enjoyment of the game. Everyone wants something for nothing.

All I want is a CANON STAR TREK MMO, and not something from the "re-boot" garbage.

Sorry about the rant... this just drives me up the wall sometimes.

More than happy to help out with the survey. Hopefully a sociological (or is it marketing research?) look at the state of the game will help with the er, state of the game. Keep the surveys coming though it doesn't seem to have helped with the recent Cryptic marketing flops.
