Hey all, since its not documented on the site as easily as it should be, These are the links to getting your demo started correctly. (Depending where you are getting it from)

This should help you get everything setup and started.
The process:
<Cryptic_Falkoren> Step 1, Sign up for an account on the website
<Cryptic_Falkoren> Step 2, Download the demo client and begin installation
<Cryptic_Falkoren> Step 3, towards the end of the install there should be a prompt which opens a URL to an activation link that applies the product to your account assuming you are still logged in
<Cryptic_Falkoren> Step 4, play the game
(Step 5: Profit! =p )
STO Unlimited Demo Info:
You can keep a STO Trial account forever! You will be limited to ONLY level 2 and missions you can do are the 1st tutorial and rescue the Azure.
You can roam around the 1st starbase and mingle with friends.
You can roam around the 1st sector map around SOL.
You can join a fleet and keep in touch using the fleet chat!
Enter a referral key and you can instantly warp to your friend!
Unlock the full STO Experience by entering a retail key into your account!
You however cannot take a inactive retail account and convert it to a demo account. So those of you who had a old account, must start a new demo account if you want to just keep exploring STO for free. Then later reactive your old one if you want. This is perfect for keeping up with latest STO developments and in touch with your friends!

you can pay and play. There is no demo server. You are ij the game server, just restricted to Sol space and one mission.
Once you have the client you can simply buy the game and attach your retail game key to it to play.
