Cryptic... look at this design concept and add to the game PLS!!!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I've really been waiting patiently to see a feature like this, but i finally threw together this design concept... look at it below.

In the friends / fleet / looking for group windows, the class should be displayed to show what character is what... please please please add this.

They did this in City of Heroes. Here's what happened:

    1) People started discriminating against good players because they weren't in the right class, and there were complaints.

    2) People assumed any Defender was a healer, and got angry when they invited a Trick Arrows/Archery Defender in and found out he couldn't heal. Repeat this for other combinations and classes.

It would be even worse in this game, since that Science class person you invite based on the assumption he's a Healer/Crowd Controller might very well be flying an Escort and merely using his Science abilities to optimize his PvP performance. That Tactical person you invite based on the assumption he's DPS might be flying a Cruiser optimized for Tanking. It's simply not of tremendous relevance what class somebody is in this game in regards to their role. Ship choice, consoles, skill expenditures, and Boff skills matter far more in determining what niche you fit in than which color icon matches your uniform.

sorry, but that rings hollow to my ears. the same people you say will discriminate against people i agree are quite uptight. they're going to discriminate against someone regardless of whether they have a quick reference icon, or (as it stands) via chat/questioning other players. frankly someone i know in-game was kicked from a team because the TeamLead didn't like the way his ship looked. some people are just out there to be jerks. the rest of us shouldn't be limited because of them.

EDIT: and anyway, we're talking about adding it to a fleet roster, where (as in my case) it'll help people assembling groups to tell @ a glance which alt (some people have LOTS) a fleet member is on. saves on time.

1.) no matter what... if you aint the right class, youll get kicked from team anyways. you just might not waste peoples time and emotions and put in a skill system for users to find people alot quicker. it would be nice to see whos whos in my fleet and find out what groups to form for these special task force missions.

    2.) same as 1.

Very good point. I think that this idea is good one. I do think that it may not be on the top of the list for Priorities for STO right away, but who knows if it is easy enough for them to do I would like to see this idea in game.

Eh, if Blizzard found ways around these sorts of problems, I'm sure Cryptic can.

It was Cryptic who had the problem in the first place: they were the owners of CoH not Blizzard. Thus they understand the pitfalls better then most.

It might be a god idea to add the instance to that list.

Someone referred to players assuming a defender would be a healer and then kicking team members when they find out the defender is a tanking fighter (Or whatever...) I don't have a detailed answer to that, I just wanted to add that assumptions, by nature, are incorrect a good portion of the time. So with or without detailed class information, if you don't ask that player what role they will fill in your team, you're probably going to assume wrong.

You can't build global improvements around the irrational minority. Just add what serious players (those who understand how the game works, in this case, understanding that science doesn't necessarily mean healer) will find useful and let the amatures adjust.

I'm just saying that Blizzard solved this very problem and that as game developer professionals, they can't possibly be unaware of the problem Blizzard faced nor in how they solved it as WoW is the most successful MMO in history.

    Blizzard never fixed this problem.

Try getting into a Raid as a Hunter. :P

Right. That's kind of irrelevant to my point though. Even if they were completely incapable of solving the problem on their own, they can just look at what Blizzard did.

Well, I really do hope Cryptic does put this feature in; everyone that I have talked to physically in person agrees.
