What is the best ship?

For those who have reached Lt Cmdr rank, what do you think is the best ship out of escort, cruiser and science classes? I'll be hitting 11 soon and I am torn between which ship to get. I really wanted a cruiser but now I am hearing a lot of bad things about them being too slow and boring.

Personally, I like the Science ships, ive tried all three, and out of them, the cruiser was my least favorite, but thats my opinion, to each his/her own. My suggestion would be try each one out. The money to buy one of each is easy to come by. The things I like about science though are that it can dish out some pretty good damage while taking a beating, as it has great shields.

Edit: Im now at the Commander rank, and I still love my science ships :)

I am very happy with my Cruiser. Ripping through shields with my phasers then taking out the hull with my quantum torpedos is great. Cruisers do take a little more work to get all your weapons on target but you can get there working the throttle and turn angles. Plus you turn on the 3 weapons powers from your engineers and you can take out a Neg"Vhar or the like pretty quick.

Is it true that cruisers are better for solo play becuase they are more versatile?

It just depends on your style of play. Think of a Escort as a Destroyer, a Cruiser as a Battleship, and a Science ship as a Troop Transport. Which appeals to your style of play?

I personally found Science easier for solo play, because it has good shields, and good weapons abilities, along with its subsystem targeting (This comes with the ship, not as a BOff ability), so i hit target shields, fire on the enemy, then hit high yield torpedo from my tac officer and hit em for about 6k damage since their shields are down. I like this style of play, though I know many people who like the Escort style where you go in weapons blazing and make sure they focus on their shield's so they dont die.

The cruisers seem like the every ship really. They have good defense and offense and have a good range of BO abilities. I can jump into a fight with very little work managing shields as you constantly have to be turning anyway to get your weapons on target. Just hit them with Jam sensors, High yield and a few other phaser buffs and you have their shields down and the hull at 50% before you make your first turn.

In what way is a Science Vessel a troop transport? Is there some skill I don't have yet?

My Science Vessel is geared to be a de-buffer, and it works out pretty well.

OP, it's all about personal preference and what you like to do. Escorts are fast, have high damage, but don't take much... aka the "glass cannon." Cruisers, from what I understand, can take a beating, and can also use their engineer slots to repair other ships. Science Vessels are sorta in the medium on durability and firepower, but are able to target individual systems and have several skills that can seriously mess up the other side.

Cruisers. You can kill anything, tank anything and support anyone. All you stick is stick a bunch of beamer weapons on it, and roll Engineer, and the game is faceroll stupid easy.

To me, playing a cruiser like that seems like it would make it the most boring ship. :/

Hey I didn't design the game, only play it. I suppose I could roll out an escort or something but the thought of doing all those repetitive quests again really doesn't appeal to me.

One of these days I'll figure out what to do with the 5000 or so Starfleet merits I have too.

Hehe, i like the sound of that. I actually rolled a tactical character because I intended to make a DPS focused cruiser so I think I will still go that route especially since I love those ship designs.

No one is forcing you to deck your ship out with all beam weapons. Anyway, heard a rumor they were gonna nerf that due to it being so overpowered. Damnit, where was that thread...
