Skill Tree help

Can someone explain the skill tree to me please? First, is it a real tree or can I pick slots from different areas?

For example, in the "Star Fleet Training" area of the tree, do I need to max out Engineer Team Leader skill in order to move on to the next skill in that tree in order to use Heavy Cruiser Captain, annnd if I get Heavy Cruiser captain, can I just pick Heavy Escort Captain also without going back to the Science Team Leader skill?

Hope that explains what I am thinking..

The skills do not have any prereqs, but you do need to spend all the points from your previous rank before you can move to the next rank. For example, you must spend all 6700 skill points you've earned as a lieutenant before you can purchase any lieutenant commander skills.

This skill calculator should help ya get a better idea of how it works: http://sto-builder.binarybit.ch/

Ooooooh I see, so Column A is the LT rank Column B is LT Com and so on right? So if I wanted to focus on flying science ships, does it matter if I am a Engineer?

Each class gets four space skills that set them apart from each other.

Other than that, fly whatever you like. ;)

I'm really glad I'm not the only who failed to find the skill tree intuitive...

So, please let me know if I understand this correctly:

    1) Your ability to eventually command specific classes of ships is NOT dependent upon your being a specific department of officer? (e.g. if I want to command an escort, I do not have to start as a tactical officer? It's just that the escort will perform better if I specialize in tactical, yes?)

    2) Moving from left to right on the skill tree, you canNOT level up skills in the 2nd column before you've leveled up sklills in the 1st column. Must you level ALL skills in all four entries in the left (Lt?) column up to 9 before you can level up skills in the second (LtCom?) column?

What I don't understand is, there's 10 grades of each rank, yes? To move up a grade, I need advance up 10 skills at 100 pts/skill, meaning 1000 skill pts to go from ensign gd. 1 to ensign gd. 2? This means I'd have to spend 10000 skill pts to go from ens gd. 1 through ens gd. 10 just to get promoted to Lt, correct?

    3) I'm a tactical officer hoping to command an escort at some point... I should feel free at this point to spend skill points on all four categories (starship command, tactical team leader, engineering team leader, science team leader) without worrying that I'm headed down a skill tree that would somehow lock me out of escorts, yes?

    1. Yes. Except the last part. Escorts and all the other ships perform the same for each of the classes, if they have the skills for it, but tactical officers get stuff like Attack Pattern Alpha that ups damage and all that. Now escorts do have a bonus to weapon power subsystems, which would help tactical abilities more than engineering or science abilities.

    2. You don't have to level up any skills in a specific area to get the next rank skills in an area. For example, you can take no skills in the engineering area and then take lt. commander skills in engineering when you rank up.

Also, have you scrolled down the skill list yet? Doesn't sound like you did. I know when I started beta I was surprised by how few skills there were, then I noticed there was a scroll bar at the side of the skill screen hehe. Also, there are only 9 levels to each skill, so 900 points for lt. grade powers at max.

    3. Yes. Yet again, make sure to scroll down. Just saying because you keep mentioning the first area's abilities. There are skill sets for energy weapons, projectile weapons, ground abilities, etc.

As a tactical officer, well, really any officer, will probably want to get energy weapons skill and projectile weapons skill to up their beam/cannons/torpedo damage, and definitely starship command. The Tactical Team, Science Team, etc. leader skills all improve those specific areas ground abilities for your away team. Warp Core Engineering is pretty useful to, as it gives a rather nice bonus to powerlevels based on how low they are, with a 7 point power bonus I think at 25 power and 0 bonus at 100 power. You have plenty of skill points to spread around at lieutenant level. Don't really have to start specializing and worrying about what you'll want until Lt. Commander, but some planning in Lt. is nice as well.

That skill calculator linked in the 2nd post is very useful.
