I'd say this might be a valid posting if STO was in retail release mode where active subscriptions were ticking away.
I wouldn't, Lifetime subs wouldn't be ticking away (unless you count the persons life, which always is) therefore it would be just as invalid, but I'd love an extra day....put it between Saturday and Sunday or Sunday and Monday please
Yeah, I would be happy with an extra day of gametime in the afterlife when my lifetime subscription runs out
Sorry, but your contract strictly states that subscription lasts a LIFEtime. Afterlife subscription costs extra. Contact Billing/Support for information on payment options.
If you are building a business model, and are looking 5 10 years down road. Then life time subscriptions create a diminishing return.
Some games last for many years. But if you sell lifetime subscriptions, then at some point your player load starts to not put in cash for new upgrades or service.
(In this case of STO the small percent of lifers is probably not an issue. and the cheaper cost of bandwidth and servers over time has an effect.)
But if you have a big percent as lifetime members in any business, then eventually the income goes down below sustainable levels.
In the 70-80s there were fitness clubs that did life time memberships, it was a big craze, for a couple years many people were buying them, then all the businesses closed or changed owners.
Not saying it is the same with STO, because of the low percent of lifetime buyers, but if it was a high percent, it would create a load without revenue stream that would lower the long range future spending on advancing the game.
In the long run, life time membership only works if you plan some end point of the game worth an equivalent amount, or keep the percentage low for a quick infusion of cash only looking at short term returns or base building.
If everyone bought a life time subscription, and player base stopped expanding...
if every player bought one, the profit motive would require the game to close within a few months, because there would not be any revenue to expense reason for the profit motive to continue game.
But I would guess the lifetime membership is a small percent of player base, especially after Feb 2nd release.
can the Lifers get compensation something from the c store.
maybe a cat. that looks like data cat.
I'm happy to wait through downtime if it makes the game better, but I'll jump on any bandwagon that gets me a Spot to put in my shuttlecraft next to my tribble.

But it is interesting to think about.
