Can't rename with my own name?

So, with the Nagus giveaway, I thought I'd make a Ferengi. I've wanted to for a while. I created him with the name Flin.
Today, while playing, I noticed that while it says Flin at the side of the character panel, where it lists the crew, but above his portrait it says Gest.
When I tried to edit his record, changing Gest to Flin, it wouldn't let me, saying I already have a character with that name.
Is this a bug? What's going on here?
