I'd say that depends on your build, some builds get more out of CritH/CritD while others get more out of bonus damage.

Forget the specific build. What would you go for in general?

It really does depend heavily on the build, STO works on gear synergy so what's good for one build might not be as good or even worthless for another.

for example IIRC EPG builds would go for CritH/CritD as their primary source of damage doesn't gain much from +Dmg, while tactical weapon based builds would go more for +Dmg as they got so high natural crit that CritH would be wasted for them.

Only universal reply I can really is "what your build needs".

I'd have to agree with @spiritborn in that it depends upon your build.

Some possible options are to try a damage calculator*, parse with one or the other, or to slot both**

I think it depends if you have either a lot of Base Critical Chance (over 50%) or you're using Surgical Strikes 3, then go for as much Critical Damage Severity you can mod in your ship.

Otherwise, go for Category 2 Bonus Damage, preferably to ALL kinds so it improves the damage of your console abilities as well as your weapons.

Edit: Don't bother with Category 1 Damage.

I'd go for pure CritD for higher CritH levels, with higher CritH levels getting more comes less and less useful so in the first option you'd be paying extra (from your stat budget) for stats that wouldn't help you that much.

While +Dmg has more universal uses, somethings you get more from other stats.

Now if the question was "how I can get more out of certain build or playstyle it would easier to answer as then you could give specific advice".

OP, a very long time ago, a very smart STO player told me these things:

    1) [Dmg] is a Cat 1 modifier. Which means it is a straight add on after base damage is calculated.
    2) [CrtD] goes on weapons.
    3) [CrtH] goes on Consoles. Specifically, Tactical Consoles.
    4) STO uses the concept of 'Diminishing Returns'. Which means at a certain point, the last Console only adds a miniscule amount of the [Mod] a player wants.

Where possible, I use the following [Mod] set on all my weapons - [CrtD/Dmg] [CrtD]X3 [Dmg]. Seems to give me the most bang for the buck. Regardless of whether or not my char is Engineering or Science or Tactical. Please note however; I stopped chasing DPS years ago.

I purchased the Legendary D7 Bundle. And it comes with multiple Consoles which each add a base 20% to damage. Unless I mount all three Consoles on one ship(which means I have to give up other Consoles which are more desirable), I do not get a significant increase in damage to NPC ships.

There are other people around here who are much smarter than I am about this game. I suggest you follow whatever advice they give you if there is a conflict between what I've posted and what they suggest.

Most of that list is obsolete nowadays.
    1) [Dmg] is now a final modifier, and will multiply 1.03 against all relevant sources, including copies of itself.
2 and 3 were an extrapolation based of gear of the time. It still works out decently for mid-range players, but breaks down at the low-end (kinda always did) and the high-end nowadays.
    4) Dear sweet Q, that's an oldie. The only stats effected that way still are armor, but for everything else that was obsolete when the game went Free-to-play. Most console stats scale linearly, with each console of the same Mark and Rarity adding the exact same boost.

I personally like the L-D7, and it does pretty decent, though I also don't typically use the consoles it comes with.

This thread is lacking context. I still think the OP is trying to compare an Assimilated Module with a starship trait. Is there a console that offers 20 percent category 2 damage? Almost think the reference is to Hull Image Refractors which is cat 1.

I was comparing the assimilated module with the hull image refractors (+20% all damage). I'm running the kc beam so I factored in the 2 piece but as I have so many power saving abilities that it's not really worth the set bonus. PS4 so I can't run a dps test but the image refractors seem to be performing better on my build. Thanks to everyone on your feedback.

Didn't realize my info was out of date. Thank you. Much appreciated.
