hi im returning to the game after being away for 2 yrs, just wondering what the best beams are atm i think the last time i played it was antiproton is that still the same? im going for an all beams set up, also are the fleet tact spire consoles still the better to go with?. im guessing with all new content out there is lots of sets that is worth looking at as well?

There is no such things as best beams anymore as far as I recall. Antiproton no longer stand out as noticeable superior. As for consoles a lot has changed personally I prefer Colony Tactical Consoles. Crit chance on tactical consoles doesn't matter as much anymore so a lot of people have stopped using crit chance spire consoles. Surgical Strikes builds will likely use Crit severity instead.

As pottsey says, best is entirely subjective these days. What you have already is more than likely good enough.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Would have to echo that best energy type is, for the most part, the one you like to use. Phaser and disruptor do seem to be well supported via the storyline and reputation.

As far as sets from new content are concerned the emphasis seems to be more on individual items now. There are always new traits and items from the multitude of ships that are released.

I still primarily use Fleet Spire critical chance consoles, as well as storyline and reputation consoles with CrtH, on my (non-surgical strike) energy builds in an attempt to increase this stat as much as I can.

Yeah I'm not a DPS chaser but as far as I can tell there's enough support any energy type, be it beams or cannons, some beams are better on some situations, while others are better in different situations, it all depends on the build you're going for.

For passive regen the Discovery (DSC) reputation 2 piece (often warp core and shields) work really well. The shield has a baked in function that increases damage to enemy shields. Sometimes the 3 piece for Mycelial Lightning can be decent if using BFAW.

A popular choice to compliment the 2 piece DSC set is a Fleet Intervention deflector from the Colony world holding. Gives extra weapons specialization, shield pen, as well as CrtH and CrtD based upon hull.

Other options for mobility are Competitive reputation engines. The fortified version triggers on a hull or shield heal and is sometimes considered to be more "predictable" in it's speed boost. The innervated version triggers on tactical firing modes and can be used to go faster all the time or to kick a larger ship around to assist in it's handling.

The Competitive engines, in combination with an emergency conn hologram doff (from a Phoenix prize pack) and emergency power to engines allow for faster travel around maps via both the engine's speed boost and having evasive maneuvers resettable so as not to be held back from being in a red alert state.

If starting over, go Phaser, not because they are superior, but you can get console sets that boost them pretty easily
