Re-vamp the "separation pet" mechanics

The mechanics currently in-game for saucer separation and multi-vector mode are junk. The AI for the separated sections is beyond inept. The damage they deliver is immeasurable.
They often require considerable investment (acquiring multiple ship versions and losing a console slot to use them) and in all cases are extremely underwhelming. This whole mechanic needs serious attention. Please get it on the roadmap, its a very interesting prospect if implemented properly but in its current state its basically a waste of time..
Give them some teeth, and some abilities + controls that make it worth doing.

They need a basic command interface and maybe BOFF like skills (or at least something like the wingmen of vanguard ships). Maybe even limited customizable weapons like a 'Diablo 2' mercenary companion.
