OK, I have been a part of STO since launch, and took a huge break from the game, and came back in early Feb of this year.
And, when I come back in, there is a ship equip bug, and the only way around it at the time was using loadouts.
Now, I have seen some crazy things over the years with this game, and when the loadout system first came out, I didn't want any part of it.
But, because of that bug, I am forced to using it, and it is really a huge headache.
I want to delete the loadout I was "FORCED" into using against my will and delete it! And stop using the loadout system ever again.
I've been playing Star Trek Online for a few months, now.
For me, a couple of things help when managing my Starships and Shuttles.
1. There's an option in the settings menu that prevents movement of ship equipment from one ship to another ship when you click "Ready Starship" for use. Enable this option.
2. When I want to change the equipment on a ship, I try to save the changes (that I made) to the Loadout for that ship as soon as I can. Even if it was for just one item.
3. If I'm trying to drydock a ship, I remove all its' equipment & weapons & devices & consoles and make it into a "bare hull". Then I save that empty hull into the Loadout. Then I drydock the ship.
Loadouts can be frustrating when the equipment in the loadout's configuration is already sold or assigned to another ship.
The proper use of the loadout feature and the player's options can reduce some of those frustrations.

While I like the concept of loadouts this new feature of forced loadouts when a ship is readied is both badly thought out and extremely frustrating. Its causing so much wasted time. Not sure who came up with the recent idea of forced loadouts but it feels like its causing more problems then its solving.
Now normal loadouts that we can control, overall I love those. 99.9% of the time I never had problem with loadouts until the recent auto forced loadout change.
Only possible "fix" I learned today is when you are going to swap out items on your ship, remove them THEN save to Loadout. Next move the items you want in place and save to Loadout again. It "seems" to have clamed things down (also don't forget to disable the auto move on readying a new ship is the game options)
When I run a new ship, I stick it's gear/etc on it, save the loadout to "default", and almost never pay attention to it again. Barely notice it's there. /shrug
