Why in the love of sanity is Yeet on the in game profanity list? It's not even a swear word - it's a word for throwing something. I wanted to call my Steamrunner the USS Yeet and got denied by the profanity filter. Could it be removed?
"We've learned that friendship isn't always easy. But there's no doubt it's worth fighting for."
Even the forum censor has some pretty odd choices on the list.
I wouldn't be surprised if Yeet turned out to be some obscure profanity in another language.
From Urban Dictionary .... What is YEET Urban Dictionary?
Yeet is an exclamation that can be used for excitement, approval, surprise, or to show all-around energy. It's been around since 2008, and by now, this slang term has also become a dance move, is used to celebrate a good throw, and pops up in sports and sexual contexts, according to Urban Dictionary.15 Jul 2020
As it is mentioned shows up in sexual contexts I think that it why it's blocked
I mean, the profanity filter on this here now forum won't let you discuss the handle that you turn to open a door, and I can't name a ship after the famed author of such classics as We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, so...
I suspect it's foreign language related as somebody suggested. An innocuous word in English could mean something very different in another language. There's a certain fruit's name that refers to a certain body part in Albanian for example.
With regards to popular character/author/director names, that's because the database would be packed full of variations of the same names.
In the particular case I mentioned, however, it's because the author's surname is also, by sheer coincidence, both a nickname for "Richard" and a popular slang term for a male organ. Out of sheer contrariness, I'm tempted to name my next ship the USS Philip K. CENSORED.
Yeah the problem with profanity filters is they're often (at least I've yet to see one that works properly but I'm willing to accept it might be possible) either too zealous or not strong enough. Since more often then not if something is profanity or innocent depends on the context.
To use the word jonsills mentioned if you're talking about a person who full first name is Richard using that word would in most cases be innocent, same if you're quoting a Latin saying that has the word "human" in it and you're using the original language instead of translating it (oh for those not aware the Latin word for "human" looks identical to the ancient Greek word for "same" and can also be used to refer to men who really like each other (good lord that was a convoluted way of saying that).

Or if you're discussing the genus that humans are the last surviving member of. If you're including the species, you can abbreviate the genus (H. sapiens, H. denisova, etc), but you can't clearly discuss the genus starting with H. habilis, unless you're willing to risk ambiguity with nonspecialists by discussing "the various species of humanity".
Or that door handle I mentioned earlier. I wonder if the forum still censors doorknob?
Edit: Ah, I see they've finally okayed the word TRIBBLE. Progress.
Yeah, when I first posted the four letters that come at the end of "doorknob", they displayed in the message. Now they're censored. It's weird.
Yeah the forum software does it where at first it looks like went thru only for it end up as "TRIBBLE" when you reload the page or come back later.
EDIT:That's why I dislike profanity filters, they're more often then not just something that makes legitimate posting harder and forces you to use super convoluted wording to get the point across, while those wanting to post slurs or just "naughty" things for lolz will be around the filters by using creative misspellings.
Granted I'm old enough that I got no urge to post slurs or profanities to seem edgy but still I've yet to see a profanity filter that worked how it was suppose to and wasn't just a burden.

If THAT were the case, you would think they would have avoided naming a primary character Yeet.
The actor actually chose his character's name.

I think chat in general should be removed from the game. I am reasonably certain that any word can be attached to some sort of profanity in one language or another.
And how do you propose fleet members communicate with each other?
And I suppose that means if someone doesn't have a mic they are SOL?
Besides the in game VC sucked, but my experience with that is from YEARS ago. And while there are 3rd Party VC options like Discord or even Steam... Its unrealistic to demand people get those just to be able to talk within a fleet.
And if the chat filter had "draconian rules" it would be locked down FAR more than it is. Frankly its not that different from chat censors in many other games, and it can be turned off.
The Forum censor has a lot of odd choices. And there is a list of names that cannot be used for player or ship names, mostly canon characters and hero ships (With Discovery being the only exception due to coming out long after the game, while Titan was on the list).
So why remove a method of communication when the filter can be disabled locally?
Honestly, I think the real reason it's limited is because Noah's character is named Rae'Yeet. They generally don't want you naming your ships for in-game NPCs (I suppose on the theory that ships are usually named for dead people, not living ones).

I've asked. They'll look into it.

Some fleets I have seen require their members to use voice chat in order to join. As far as the existing profanity filter, it is very easily bypassed with creative replacements of letters and numbers and whimsical play on words. Personally, I find it a useless tool. Were anyone to (Heaven forbid) encounter someone typing things into the chat they do not like, the ignore feature works far better than the profanity filter ever will.
Honestly I think the filter is there more for legal then practical reasons, so that if some parent sues Cryptic for seeing "naughty" language in STO Cryptic can say they do have filter for it so that you can't see it. Which probably is also why it's enabled as default rather being being something that you need to turn on.
I have never played an MMO that wasn't like this.. they all have their specific names that are banned for whatever reason. It's just a part of online games, you will see it pretty much everywhere.
Just pick a different name and carry on, it's really not a big deal. There are an endless supply of names that the game will allow you to use.

Good luck with that. This is what responsible parenting and parental control software is for. Parents have the responsibility to be aware of what their children are doing and to allow or restrict their children from certain online content, not Cryptic.
You don't have to tell me that I know, but some people don't like to do that and just give their children what ever they ask and expect the media (be it movies, TV or games) make sure their little angels don't get exposed to anything said parents don't want them to be exposed. Jack Thompson's whole career was more or less based on the demands of such parents.
Well mostly in US but then Cryptic is a US based company, back here you're generally expected to obey age restrictions and if you give your 10 year old a 18 rated game it's your fault not the game company's fault.

To be fair on that end... hasn't stopped anyone from getting around it by using alternate spellings or character replacement.
Well, I doubt they can catch every variation a player can come up with.
I had a toon called John-Luck Pilchard, one called Horatio Tubawhistler etc etc.
