Dev stream summary from Yesterday

From reddit:
  • The Janeway model was largely done by external artists that work with Cryptic, with Amelia March doing the last 10% touch-ups on making sure it looked right
  • When making the "Firewall" mission they didn't know/plan to have Janeway come in on the next mission. That was something that came up due to Prodigy starting to air.
  • When writing missions they assume they are going to get the person they want, and write as if they are going to get them.
  • Mirror Kuumaarke's pips are on the "wrong" side of her collar due to the way her jacket wraps around
  • One of the Cryptic devs said that, if budget wasn't an issue, he would love to do "Game of Combs" where every character, male or female, is just Jeffrey Combs. Another would like to do an episode like the DS9 episode where the runabout got shrunk. Character artist would like the starship dating sim joke done a few years ago to be real.
  • The art director has a philosophy of revamping older content when possible.
  • The ISS Brookhaven ship in the "Firewall" mission is named after the Brookahven National Labs where one of the first video games was made
  • The VA for the male Inquisitor is Mark Dodson, who was Salacious Crumb in Star Wars Vi: Return of the Jedi
  • When making new missions they have a pre-pitch, and pitch process, as well as weekly playtests to make sure the missions are fun, and make sense
  • The original design for the fight in the transporter room of the ISS Voyager was that you were only supposed to have a knife, and it would have been a knife fight.
  • When doing the playtests for Red Shift one of the devs did the whole mission several times with just the knife.
  • There was a pretty big discussion on how to do your mirror self in STO. Part of the fun of playing another character is experiencing them in their fullest, and their voice is a part of that, but they didn't want to set a specific voice for your character. The voicebox was a compromise on it.
  • The section with trying to hijack the transporter on Jupiter station, and having it fail, was to give the sense that the Federation is just as competent/skilled as their mirror counterparts.
  • When asked what they are most looking forward to in STO one of the devs said "at least 4 more years"
  • The reason why auto attack doesn't work when playing a different character(like Mirror you) is due to a technical issue with the way your essentially "wearing" another creature over you. They will look into trying to fix it in the future, but no promises.

    "at least 4 more years"

    does not sound promising...

not sure why that doesn't sound promising, looks like they have 4 years of content already planned out. That is pretty cool.

well, for me its more the way it was presented and answered. maybe they do, and that would be nice, but given the state of affairs lately with this game, im not inclined to think as you. :)

I think you're being way too pessimistic to assume shutdown in 0-3 years from just this:

    > When asked what they are most looking forward to in STO one of the devs said "at least 4 more years"

If feeling less doomy, that can just be this employee is hoping to work at Cryptic for another 4 years before moving on. Many tech people change jobs fairly often.

Or like @kaosbain suggests, they have 4+ years of things they'd like to do in STO and hope nothing unexpected happening like the new owners deciding to outsource development to Elbonia.

It would be nice if they informed others, in case they also wanted to watch.

I do recall however Noah AK (Mary Wiseman's --Tilly husband) who also played the Andorian on Discovery did a Twitch Stream yesterday I think. I was going to watch it yet hadn't yet, I suspect this is where the INFO came from.

    https://twitter.com/N_A_K
    https://www.twitch.tv/ then 'search' thetype1trekkie.

I'm going to go and watch it now, so hopefully that helps.

Well that's why I asked where it was streamed as there's no link to the stream and my timezone makes it impossible to watch streams when they air.

Alas it seems other seem to assume I just magically know where it was stream and thus are ignoring my question.

EDIT:It seems that Noah's stream is the one talked here but it would have been nice if the people making the thread would mentioned that as I only watch twitter if I have to.

Finally, someone who knows what people really want!

    Just kidding.

    ...

    Well, half-kidding.

The ISS Brookhaven ship in the "Firewall" mission is named after the Brookahven National Labs where one of the first video games was made
And we have to destroy it. Careful with accidental allegories.
The VA for the male Inquisitor is Mark Dodson, who was Salacious Crumb in Star Wars Vi: Return of the Jedi
And also Lincoln in the game.

And did they say who the VA for the female version is?
When making new missions they have a pre-pitch, and pitch process, as well as weekly playtests to make sure the missions are fun, and make sense
Errr... no, I won't say anything about that.
The original design for the fight in the transporter room of the ISS Voyager was that you were only supposed to have a knife, and it would have been a knife fight.
Why was it changed? It'd have been much better than pretty much wiping the floor with any of the available abilities.
When doing the playtests for Red Shift one of the devs did the whole mission several times with just the knife.
Who is this mad person? They deserve credit and a (p)raise.
The section with trying to hijack the transporter on Jupiter station, and having it fail, was to give the sense that the Federation is just as competent/skilled as their mirror counterparts.

Well, considering the power trays and loadout are always bugged in a way (like abilities showing up randomly in your tray, loadouts occasionally switching to an older version and of course, transfers to the test server scrambling everything around), I'm not even surprised.

Can't believe I missed that detail. My dad worked for Brookhaven National Lab before he retired.
