Anybody else use themes for their ship names?

fallenkezef#4581 fallenkezef Member Posts: 644 Arc User
So here is the fleet of Kezef son of Korek, scion of the house of Kor. Dahar Master, Hero of the Empire, saviour of the pathetic Federation, currently serving with the Alliance special operations executive.

AFFS Vendetta (Temer class)
AFFS Warspite (Khitomer class)
IKS Ambush (fleet B'Rel class)
IKS Audacious (fleet Vo'Quv class)
IKS Drake (fleet Advanced Light Cruiser)
IKS Furious (fleet Vor'ral class)
IKS Phoenix (legendary Light Intel Warbird)
IKS Repulse (Khopesh class)
IKS Thunder Child (fleet Chargh class)
IKS Vampire (fleet MatHa class)
IKS Vanguard (Jem'Hadar Vanguard Dreadnought)
IKS Victorious (D7 flight deck miracle worker)

Each ship with the exceptions of Thunder Child and Vanguard are WW2 British warships. I always have at least on ship called Thunder Child as I love war of the worlds and Vanguard was the last British Battleship so sort of fitted. The new event Carrier will be the AFFS Indefatigable
Anybody else have a coherent theme when it comes to naming their ships? I have a T6 token and can't think of anything I need.

I used to only name my Fed ships after military places or battles involving either the USMC or the American Revolution (Tun Tavern, Bellau Wood, Guadalcanal, Cowpens, etc), with the U.S.S. Faith of the Heart being the only notable exception. In the past year or so though I've been branching out to include dinosaur names, Greek and Norse mythology, and even something as random as the TV show Dexter (I.S.S. Slice of Life).

For Klingon and Romulan ships I've never had a theme, in fact I often just stick with what the game names those because I have no idea what else to use.

Yes, my captains all have themes (mirror universe defector, alien scientist using hybrid Tholian tech, etc.) and their fleet names then follow something related to that theme. Space Barbie is the true endgame :)

Most of my Klingon ships are named after Kilrathi fighters and capital ships from Wing Commander. My Romulan has Legend of Zelda names for her ships.

I have one character that uses sir homophones, such as Sir Vile, Sir Up, Sir Cuss, Sir Pent. I think he currently captains the Sir Amic.

Heh, I love those games. I knew Ginger Lynn as an engineer long before I found out about her, "other" career. Mark Hamil was great in those last 3 games aswell.

My old main, Admiral Sills, is a sci captain, so I chose to name his ships after Earth scientists (currently he's commanding the Mirror Gagarin-class USS Gbur, named for optical physicist Dr. Greg Gbur because he wrote a book about invisibility in SF and also because he's often very funny on Twitter).

Tovan Khev, whose crew consists entirely of alternate-universe versions of Tovan and Rinna, names every ship for himself - he's currently commanding RRW Tovan Khev XXVII, as I recall.

Yang's ships are all related to RWBY, either a character , critter or place, USS Ozpin, USS Beowolf, USS Beacon. Kim flies ships named after space probes, like pioneer, viking, vanguard, Cassini

they all have a theme. Deety, Short for Dejah Thoris' ships are all named after barsoom. Drummond's ships are all navigational stars. Rias ships are named after anime voice actors. Rachel's are all historical naval officers

Not a theme but a system. I always name them after the ship class they are a part of. Not very creative, but it's always a canon name and I can find the ship easily in the roster.

I don't have theme within a single character but I do have naming themes for the main ships of some of my characters, for example my main has USS Teldral (her homewold), my Male Klink has IKS Honor's Blade and my Reman's ship name has bird-of-prey theme though I don't recall exactly what I named that ship.

My Fed Alien Science captain, Hildegaard, uses a series of ship names derived from poker hands - Deuces Wild, Aces & Eights, Dead Man's Hand, the latter two referring to the legendary, (and perhaps apocryphal), death of Wild Bill Hickok. She's currently flying a Horizon-class Fleet Retrofit Research Science Vessel T-5x, the USS Deuces Wild III

My KDF Alien Tac, Ayesha, uses the ship name Boudicca followed by a Roman Numeral. She's currently flying a Krenim Science Vessel T-6x, the Boudicca VII

My KDF Orion Engineer, Artemisia*, uses the ship name Honey Badger followed by a Roman Numeral. She's currently flying a Gok'tad Carrier T-6x, the Honey Badger X

*named for the RL Artemisia described by Herodotus of Halikarnassos, not the fantasy comic book Artemisia from the Zack Snyder movie.

For a while I was naming my ships after movie stars who got caught by papperazi during wardrobe malfunctions, but started to feel guilty after naming one of my fleet cruisers Anne Hathaway.

Each one of my toons has a different theme - which can be pretty much anything; my main character Tylha has ships named after compositions by Gustav Holst (and is most often seen in the mighty USS King Estmere.) Other themes include constellations, composers, and characters from E.E. "Doc" Smith, Cordwainer Smith, and John Brunner.

Depends on the character. I have one who commanded a series of escorts named for venomous snakes, culminating in his current U.S.S. Taipan (Fleet Defiant-class). My pride and joy, a TOS Constitution-class, I christened U.S.S. Warspite, registry NCC-1776. I was on a Royal Navy kick at the time, choosing the registry number to reflect the fact that I'm American.

I generally just pick what sounds right.

USS Turaahn doesn't mean anything as far as I know. But with most things it's the case that you first have a phenomonon and then you name that thing. Maybe one day my main character will have ensured it will by synonymous to 'impressive' or something like that. At least that's the idea behind picking meaningless names; you give them meaning. ;)

In a few cases though, my ship names refer to something from canon (USS and IGV Weytahn for a Titan and Charal class ship). My Universe class ship is named USS Jaresh-Inyo.
I named a Xindi Reptilian ship USS Rigel because the Arboreal councillor once mentioned that "dealing with the Reptilians is like bargaining with the sun; You make no progress, and you come away burned". Rigel isn't the hottest star, but it's still very hot.

Or they follow (also like the USS Weytahn) an established naming convention or one that's derived from the official ship class name.
    - Eisenberg for example is a city in Germany; I picked USS Hilversum for one of my Eisenberg class ships.
    - My Kirk class ship is name USS Rachel Garrett.
    - Aquatic Xindi ships get names like USS Phiat Ennam'tar - compare with the name of councillor Kiaphet Amman'sor.

And sometimes I derive the name from the build or the type of ship:
    - Apparently, gadolinium is the coldest metal so I chose that for my Breen carrier.
    - My main tactical character was the first one to make plasma weapons succesful on my account; so I named it USS Corona (many years ago, for the record).
    - USS Siphrain for a drain ship.

My main uses storms or winds. Tempest, Tornado, Hurricane, Sirocco, Zephyr, Typhoon, etc. Where the storm is also an RAF fighter plane, I use the first service date as the NCC number. :)

Ah yes. Natural phenomena can provide good names too.

I had a ship named USS Mistral a long time ago.
    And the USS Coriolis.

My catian toon named all her ships after big cats. Bobcat, Lion, Tiger, Puma... you get the picture. Another toon named all her ships after anime character family names cause I'm a nerd. Another toon named all her ships after characters names of Stargate SG-1 cause her back story was she was an alien that became fixated on the TV show. It's fun coming up with naming conventions or themes.

My characters that use themes for naming ships are either going to be Federation or Romulan characters, and only one Romulan really stuck to naming themes. My first Fed character, Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan, uses Farscape references when naming ships. My first Romulan character, N'veid, uses various names for birds of prey (RRW Buteo, RRW Accipiter, RRW Harpy Eagle, RRW Gyrfalcon), and my first TOS Fed character, Mister Crowley, uses song titles from Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath albums. My first DSC Fed character (Little Green Man) uses Texas counties, and my Delta Fed Cardassian captain was using Mexican regional names, but I've been thinking about renaming my ships to snakes in general.

I hope you don't mind but using Ozzy albums for names is such a great idea, I am gonna probably do that with one of my own toons, but with other artists, maybe The Beatles or The Cure. Much fun with naming themes! Hmmm Captain Robert Smith captaining the Disintegration!

I used to name all of my ships with the themes of the various captains, but nowadays I tend to only do that with the main ship (and sometimes a few others) of the particular captain. Usually I try to use names in the language of the captain where possible.

For my Romulans I often use realworld bird traits translated into Rihannsu as fictitious bird names like Arrenhe’Morhhae lit. “Swift Strike” (Peregrine), Ipae'llaiir lit. “Firecrown” (I forget which bird), Mos'Ihhueindet lit. "Forced to Water" (Perigrine, which has hooked talons and so get pulled underwater if it grabs too big of a fish).

I have a Drow character (as a Romulan offshoot) who uses Drow language names.

On the KDF side I mostly have Orion characters who use Orion language names were possible (there are not a lot of those available), the few Klingon captains I have generally use something appropriate to their motif in tlhIngan Hol.

I have few captains from a custom 'alien' race from a neutral planet in the Briar Patch nebula who look a bit demonic, and I use demonic-sounding names for the ships and captains. I have several in the KDF and one or two in Starfleet.

My Starfleet characters don't have a unifying theme, but they do generally have personal themes. One captain is named Ianthe and uses ocean-themed ship names, another is very loosely based on one of my Mage the Ascencion characters and uses Magick terms for ship names. One of them is from Earth 2 and uses 20th century UFO mythos references and so has ships like USS Roswell.

I have a number of faux-Vorta who usually just use the Dominion hull numbers but one is a bit odd and uses rebel, freedom, or conspiracy theory names.

I have a lot of other captains (I am a bit of an altaholic) and most of them use some kind of naming theme or another.

Not really. Though I generally abuse apostrophes in Kilngon ship names, Klingons love apostrophes.

Outside of that I just use whatever pops in first.

My main Fed's main ships are all part of the Oriale "series", which in my headcanon, is a series of ships used as experiments/prototypes with various mixed tech and technically on loan, for a lack of better word. This is why one was a bugship, another was a time-displaced Vengeance, another was a Baltim gift from the Iconians, etc. and the current one is a Vedcrid.

Why "Oriale", well it's the name of a character from an obscure French cartoon from the 2000s. And I like said character.

The KDF main's ships are all numbered "sisters" in Klingonese, like "Second Sister" and recently "Third Sister".
