Can I revive a thread without being pounced on?

kayajaykayajay Member Posts: 1,990 Arc User
I know that in the past, I was once condemned for making a new comment on a long and extensive thread, which had slipped back quite a few months. It's "cold", "dead", "You can't do this", etc. The problem is though that some of our threads have just covered so many, it would be such a waste to have to start a new one with all the same information on it.

Is the rule still in place about old threads, or are threads free to be revived?

The thing is that some of those threads could have info that's out of date and new players would obvious not know that, also mods wouldn't have time to check each and every single thread to see if info is to date.

The threads I'm thinking of are for things I'd love to see STO do in the future, so might still have a place today. I started a couple of great Captain Proton ideas and I sometimes think of things to add to them. There were some great discussions going on them...but then I get moaned at for daring to.

I just think that unless threads "expire" and get deleted, that people should be free to comment on anything.

That rule will always be in place, the proper etiquette when you want to bring up something from an old thread is to create a new one and provide links in the OP to any relevant dead threads.

The Necromancy Rule would still apply, and has never been revoked. As mentioned above, it would be better to just start a new thread, and add links to older threads.

And no... "useless" threads don't get deleted. They just get buried by newer posts and threads. That's why we have occasional cases of Necromancy resurrecting threads from YEARS ago. The thread still exists. Its just buried.

The reason we have the Necromancy Rule is to keep information that is being discussed relevant to the current state of STO. Topics from, say... game launch aren't going to be relevant to the state of the game today. I mean how does the old Fleet Patrol Escort (before the refit with the fused tail gun) relate to today when it is not available? Or how about referencing one of the old T5 Star Cruiser variants currently known as the Sentinel as the Avenger today?

Exceptions can be made for the Necromancy Rule if it turns out to be relevant, like when the Red Angel Suit was put in the Mudd Store and there were still questions about it from when it first came out. However note that exceptions are made on a case by case basis as determined by the mods based on relevance. In this case... again as mentioned above, probably best to just start a new thread and provide links to the older ones.

This has been a standard rule on pretty much every 'official' game forum I've read in over a decade. /shrug

Start a new thread, link the old thread and add something new to the conversation. Necro, whilst sometimes amusing, is against forum rules.

To slightly expand on what my cohort said above, the necroposting rule is still in effect and hasn't been removed. The necro rule is meant to keep threads current and relevant. As the life of a game progresses, things tend to get changed and hopefully made better, meaning information contained in certain threads can become outdated and no longer valid.

As an example lets suppose a new player comes in and is looking for a particular item such as the Assimilated Deflector because he wants to try the Borg set. Player sees a thread talking about how the item only drops from STFs and it's a low drop rate. As such the player does a ton of STFs thinking it will drop from there. When the player never gets the deflector they think something is wrong with the game leading to an unnecessary bug report, or the player quitting outright. All because the information they obtained was out of date and no longer valid. This is especially problematic with Cstore items, such as someone reading that a sale is going on if there really isn't, then trying to harass CS about it. You might say "but Dark that stuff doesn't happen that often if it does happen, and people wouldn't quit over something that minor." However you would be surprised at how many stories like that I've heard from STO and other games of people doing crazy stuff because they got bad info.

Bug reports in the bug reporting area of the forum are exempt from the necro posting rule as there have been times when a bug has been reported and fixed, only to resurface later. This allows us and the dev team to track the potential life of a bug and any new developments that may crop up. Any other exceptions to the necro rule are made purely on a case by case basis, such as the Red Angel suit example stated above by Rattler.

If you feel a particular thread should be granted exception to the necro posting rule, then contact the moderation team and tell us what the thread is and why you think it should be exempted from the necro rule. If the exception is granted, we will let you know and may choose to make note of it in the thread itself.

Honestly most if not all forums I've been on have some sort of a thread necromancy rule in place. Those being in place for the reasons our mods outlined, if that's bad due being out-dated just creates more work for no benefit without a "no necro" rule.

To use a real life example what if there was a discussion about how homosexual people were considered officially mentally ill in Finland, which hasn't been the case for as long as I've been alive (the law was change a year before as I born) but someone resurrected that discussion that hasn't been relevant for 40 years, that might give people unfamiliar with the subject a wrong impression and make them think this was still something that was relevant.

As I recall, that was the country where they had to repeal that classification because a whole fuckton of people called in to work saying they couldn't come in - they were too g.ay to work. Funniest TRIBBLE I've ever seen, and a good way to turn nonsense like that into a positive.

First time I've heard about anything like that and honestly it really doesn't sound very Finnish thing to do, so I'll have to look into it.

Actually, I already did - it wasn't Finland, it was Sweden, and it wasn't nearly the pomp and circumstance it was made out to be. It was just an archaic classification that got removed with little fuss after it was brought to the attention of their version of the NHS...though one person did manage to get paid sick leave for calling in TRIBBLE before it was revoked.

That I could see especially if the Swede in question was a closeted TRIBBLE person to begin with (I dunno if that was the case) and was aware of the removal of the classification.
