Seems we've got some new ships/classes on the horizon!

Apparently the ship that looks like an Excelsior, is actually a whole new class according to someone who works on LD. New Vulcan design as well.

The model in the 1st picture, apparently called the "Endurance Class" is a complete mystery atm.

If the Vulcan ship makes it in-game… I will own one…

Yea as that is now confirmed to be a fan design... the Endurance is a no go for Cryptic.

So... the most interesting one (the first pic) likely won't be added?

I have little reason to be excited then. I don't really care for Vulcan designs and the other one looks like a ship that already has too many variants to be added as a separate ship.

I'm neutral on the Excelsior variant honestly. Until I see more... its basically just an Excelsior to me.

As for the Vulcan ship... could be used as a T6 for the D'kyr, enabling some customization for that ship.

The Vulcan ship pictured would probably make a better "modern" T6 for the Surak science ship class or Sh'Ran battlecruiser class than the D'Kyr class from the looks of it. The signature feature of the D'Kyr class is the relatively smaller ring that can rotate flat into the hull when it is dawdling around at impulse.

USS Endurance is a physical model a fan by the name of Bill Krause designed and built from scratch:

He put some absolutely incredible detail into it:

The Horatio (the Legendary Ambassador-class) takes some clues from its design, especially the "neck" with a hole in the middle. So we have something close to it in the game.
Not only the ship itself, that shuttle is gorgeous!

Also, making the whole name with lights instead of using one projector light to make it visible. Take that 32nd century ships!

I'd wager that the Excelsiornot will find it's way into STO - whether it be as a new skin option to the existing models or a new class remains to be seen though.

From a tweet i saw from one of the Lower Decks show people. The 'Excelsior' seen in the promo for the last episode of Lower Decks is a completely new ship and not a retrofit of the Excelsior.

Trying to find the tweet in question

    Found it,

Yeah - but again, the question is whether STO would add the Excelsiornot skin to the existing models or make a whole new ship. Its a difficult call as regardless of what they say about it being a new class, the Excelsior class lineage is laughably obvious.

I rather hope STO don't treat it as a new class as it'd almost definitely end up in a prize box.

I think they would treat it as a new class personally. One reason is depending on the ships size she might be 'significiantly' bigger than the Excelsior trying to kitbash those parts might be a nightmare.

Second, it allows Cryptic to use a exact likeness in BOFF Layout and specialisation for the ship that a previous Excelsior might already have. Example another 'Miracle worker' ship. Basically saying one copy for the price of two without the playerbase going "But Excelsior Y already has BOFF Layout Z, or it is better'

I suspect that most of the ships from the new shows will end up as lockbox, especially if CBS pressures them into not mixing the materials between animated and live show ships.

I hope it's a skin, unlockable for the LExcelsior. I don't think they can make a better version of it.

The version shown in LD looks much like the "Excelsior II-class" from the Fleet Operations mod for Armada II, IMO (which was also a completely new class despite name and basic layout; conceived as a light cruiser sister to the Sovereign).

It won't be a new unlockable skin for the Legendary. That would mean retroactively adding it to existing Legendaries out in the wild, which will start bringing up questions about retroactively adding variant parts to other Legendaries that came out after said Legendaries, such as the Crossfield Refit and Mirror Warship being added to the Legendary Crossfield and Legendary DSC Connie respectively.

They've already set a precident of not retroactively adding parts to Legendaries when a new variant is released after the fact. They reneg on that with the Excelsior, we'll have a firestorm over the Crossfield and DSC Connie.

If it unlocks parts for that class... it would have to be obtained to unlock just like the Mirror Warship and Crossfield Refit.

Frankly, it looks a lot like the Avenger-class (T5) with the fleet-version's pylons. The saucer is round and the nacelles have slightly TOSified bussards, but the overall silhouette is extremely similar.

So its an Obena class... bigger than an Excelsior, and looks to be inspired by the Sovereign class based on those nacelles.

Looking forward to seeing her in action (and hopefully surviving. Several Federation starships havent had the best track record when meeting up with the Cerritos :) )

Of course, only jumping to conclusions but....

Definitely need that Cerritos Vanity Shield.

Still plenty of differences, as opposed to being a oversized Excelsior with Sovereign nacelles

I was thinking the same thing! I wonder if that would be more a challenge than the smoother textures the other vanity shields present? Regardless, I'd like to have it.

    What several odd coincidences, indeed.

    Also,
It seems the Obena-class continues the trend of Excelsior(-looking) ships being rendered useless or tossed around.

Lower Decks spoiler. In case not everyone has seen it yet.
When the Archimedes is disabled it falls into a tumble. Which provides some nice angles on its design.
Huh. At first glance I wondered if the Obena-class was changed enough from an Excelsior to warrant an entirely new class? The Archimedes is an interesting bridge between Excelsior and Sovereign. The saucer is three decks around the edge. As opposed to Excelsior's two decks. The neck has more decks. Plus the saucer is oval ala the Sovereign. The hull material, as we call it here, is still Excelsior not TNG era. While sporting those Sovereign nacelles.

Avoiding spoilers, but Thomas Marrone said on his Twitter that the Obena-class was too big to work with Excelsior's current skeleton.
