I just saw the announcement, "Vanity Shields for Dilithium!" and I'm wondering...is that why the exchange is screwed-up at the moment?
I also can't believe they've got the cheek to be asking for 280,000 Dilithium for 10 vanity shields, which are character bound and include the DELIGHTFUL Ferengi, as well more of the most hideous shields out there.
No, this will HELP dil sellers by reducing the over-supply of dil. It will also increase the supply of zen from people wanting to buy shields. See the existing threads on the dil exchange for details for why too much dil has made selling it harder.
It's a lock box shield that goes for very high EC on the exchange, yours for about $5.50 worth of zen, Normally you have to win a weapon choice pack, then open it just to get a very slight chance at the vanity shield.
Do I like that it is only 1 vanity shield per character? No, but for this price in dilithium I think it is reasonable set price. What I don't like is not being able to know what a vanity shield will look like on a starship I may want it on prior to buying. I'll have to look on the internet & hope I find the combination of vanity shield & starship for that.
& then pray that later on Cryptic doesn't decide to release these vanity shields in Mudd's since Mudd's is account-wide.
Guys, keep it civil regardless of which side of the fence you fall on

2: this is a really good deal. It costs less than just buying the S31 shield off the exchange by converting zen to EC.
3: this is intended to eat up dil. While account unlocks are nice, the entire purpose of this is to eat up as much dil as possible, hence requiring a purchase on every character you want it on.
Considering all 3 of the above, there is nothing valid to complain about here.

You are absolutely right here. I think it's a great start.
Perhaps next they could add the obsoleted T5U lockbox and Lobi ships to the Phoenix Box as extra incentive to buy up some Dil??

The one I'd want is some of the experimental weapons from lock box ships. The lightning strike is out of place for Space Barbie on most of my ships but I'm not going to spend $150+ on keys just to fix that.
May help a little in the short term but look at the phoenix boxes, meant to be a dilithium sink...things got worse so they were made permanent...still capped the exchange
The problem is these monthly sales and dilithium flooding, if the devs keep treating sto like it's a gacha game it's slowly but surely gonna fall apart

We do see the exchange rates react to a Phoenix Event though. But I will admit they need to slow down the events a bit due to event fatigue. But that's a double edged sword because guess why we got event spam? People complaining of lack of things to do. So... its partially our fault.

Maybe they could add or create a new ground battlezone, which are more funny than the space battlezones, or something like the swtor flashpoints
I would like more things to do on Nimbus or they could extend the dyson ground battlezone.
they could add some of the old lobi costumes/uniformes in the phoenix boxe, or in the dil store. 280 000 dil for a vanity shield no thx, but for a costume, yes, sure. (nakhul, voth); but without a time restriction. It is hard for casual players to earn 280 000 dil in such a short time

That's the point. If you want the item within the window they are directing you toward the dilithium exchange.

Phoenix prizes could work decently enough if there was something valuable enough at the VR or UR tier that *CAN'T* be acquired by any other means. VR is common enough that players would put down dilithium to chase without a second thought, and UR is still common enough that it can entice similar splurging, whereas epic is pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking. The problem is figuring out what kind of item that should be, what it should do, and how it can appeal without feeling mandatory, too.
I don't know if it's mechanically possible (my suspicion is no), but something that swaps out normal affixes on ship weapons for a new special firing-arc enhancing affix that increases the firing arc by 20-30 degrees wouldn't make players more powerful but it would create a new dynamic in how players engage in combat. You wouldn't *HAVE* to do it, and it would reduce your weapons' effectiveness, but it would allow the run-and-gun style combat common in beamboats to be possible with more kinds of weapons and ships.
I agree on Phoenix. It could be a lot more useful and serve its purpose again if they just tweaked it a little bit. We have a lot of early Lobi ships that will never sell a mudd pack and really don't sell lobi anymore. They would be good adds... if they where account unlocks anyway. Your right about epic tier though the drop rate is pretty terrible... but that could be tweaked.
I say they could just do the Crytpic thing and add some new gear into Phoenix. I mean why not a couple new unique uni consoles... or even ship sets. They don't have to be over powered just smartly different. It is cryptic they could reuse graphic work, and just plug in some new stats. They could also add some new ship traits and put them in at UR. Right now what is UR good for a few old T5 ships.... a really bad voth torpedo I guess.
What I would do with Phoenix though in order to drive things is make things time limited. As an example why not put account bound Lockbox weapon packs in the purple tier for one week runs. They could also add the lockbox consoles again for week long runs. They could revive the old lockboxs for a week via phoenix (so it would still be in keeping with the old things reborn theme). When they needed a valve they could do a week long run of items from 1-3 of the old boxes... and account bind the drops so people aren't flooding the exchange market.
If they did a week long run where they had things like the Borg Doff packs as a option at purple tier ect... they would burn Dil out of the system fast.

Technically something like flashpoints already exist. Ground TFOs.
As far as I know the Gon'cra battlezone is still semi borked, and no one really likes the Gamma Quadrant "battlezone". I think there are plans to revamp Defera at some point...

None of the ground STFs is even remotely comparable to a fully fledged flashpoint, though.
Maybe the borg ones, and that's only because they require strategy and knowledge, which most people don't care to go for nowadays, so they become a slog.
And it's all fine and good - I mean, when people think Star Trek they think about ships, not ground combat even if there's a fair bit of that, too.
I wouldn't be opposed to flashpoint-like activities, especially if they're made with traditional roles (tank, healer, dps) in mind, but then they'd have to rework how ground combat work, because at the moment it's not in its best shape.

280k? I could afford it....but not a chance (especially as I main bops so its doubtful anyone would see them, nyuck nyuck)
If it was not bind on character...maybe (account unlock would be nice, but theres no chance of that)
Even though cryptic never would read this (heck, we have to go to twitter or reddit to find out stuff about the game instead of the official forum) - I can understand the logic of boc on lockbox won shields (at the time for bragging/lockbox sales increasing...now I'd say it'd be fairer to make them boa but I know theres issues with changing items lock properties retroactively) but as we are buying these directly, bind on account would be a lot fairer and more likely to work as a dil sink

Star Tek is also the realm of the away teams, crews, ground exploration, and ground fights etc. DS9 (my favorite trek show) is a good mix of both ground and space.
I personally prefer the ground stuff in STO, because I can equip my boffs with a lot of stuff, + they are really funny.
I bought a lot of lobi stuff for my characters and their boffs, and if I should pay for something now, that won't be a ship. the space content is too dull and repetitive. if the devs put the old costumes/uniforms from the lobi store in the phoenix boxes or the dil store, I would be happy to pay 280 000 dil , even if it is not an account unlock.

yes, you are right. for me, the lack of strategy is really annoying.
kobalistan is interesting, but the missions are not really fascinating (not the missions given by the general and Harry Kim)

What this means is you get a Lockbox Vanity Shield for 450 or so Zen, or roughly 4 Keys purchased from the C-Store. They have always been a single Charaxter unlock.
Now, what is the going Exchange rate for those 4 Keys? - under 40 million EC. I've seen Vanity Shields up on the Exchange for prices of Lobi Ships, so good to crash that gougers market.

This is only a week long thing... and those shields in unbound versions are still going to be as rare a drop as a lockbox ship. (in fact they are a rare drop from another lockbox drop... so if anything they are rarer then ships) So no the exchange pricing isn't likely to change much. At least not in the long term.
It seems that Cryptic always repeats the idiocy. Remember when the Infinity Lockbox had a Ultra Rare T6 Ship Selection Pack containing the Vonph or Archeros. You could get them for under 100 million on the Exchange. Then they added to the normal T6 Ship Selection Pack. Prices of those two went through the roof. It's all in the Packaging. Put the Vanity Shields in a Vanity Selection Pack. Same with Omnis in the Weapons Pack, make them a selectable item under Beams. Prices would drop.
The Scramble Fighters, Delta Prime, and Point Defense Protocols should be added to the Starship Trait Selection Pack. Do some work to organize this mess. And unbind the Selection Packs as they were before. Don't make me have to study trends in the Market. Let the Buyer decide.

The purpose here isn't really to eat up dil reserves. It will do that. But it's really about getting more zen into the exchange. So that really means prompting people who don't have dil reserves to buy zen specifically to convert. I get that it's a subtle and nuanced distinction but making dil scarce doesn't fix the exchange issue - increasing the zen supply does.
That's why the pricing is so key. It's really about zen cost, not dil cost.
It needed to be sufficiently less zen than the keys -> ec conversion but not so inexpensive that most players had the dil reserve to buy their ba'ul/s31 without converting zen. It also has to be a short term offer so that players don't just grind dil for it.
I think it's a really smart stop gap measure. Smart enough it actually surprised me a little. But it is just short term relief and the demand for zen/abundance of dil still needs to be addressed by both making dil more valuable (by giving players a reason to spend it) and increasing the flow of zen into the exchange (by being a little more canny about high cost/demand additions to the zen store).
Did I read the patch notes correctly that these versions of the vanity shield swill be account-bound? If so I'm a far more likely buyer if I can shifted the shields around my account to see which works best with whatever starships.
I still think of this as a band aid measure towards the current dilithium "crisis", but at least Cryptic is attempting something & as many have already pointed out, per dilithium, if you're into vanity shields they're a, subjectively, reasonable price.
I still have a fear that down the road Cryptic could issue these vanity shields in Mudd's for purchase.
Also, if Cryptic really wanted a direct injection of zen into STO I'd think it would make sense to have a zen sale, charge bonus.

"The versions purchased from the Dilithium Store will be "Bound to Account on Pickup" and thus cannot be sold on the Exchange."
My guess is that is only until you equip them. Account on pickup, character on equip.
> I still have a fear that down the road Cryptic could issue these vanity shields in Mudd's for purchase.
Mudd store is a game changer for sure. I made my peace with it realizing the few facts we have about it:
- releases are slow, like a few items per quarter. At that rate it is highly unlikely everything ever will be re-released through it. - items in it are old, 2 years or so. - the cost of these acc unlock items are extremely high considering you face packs. One can only make a good deal here if one needs multiple things from those packs on multiple chars or the original release route is cheaper.
To abstract this to your decision: If you want 3 different vanity shields on 3 different chars now I’d strongly suggest you make use of the current offer via dil. On the other hand if you plan to buy the section 31 shield seven times or something like that I would not do it.

I'd think, with how Cryptic conducts things, these vanity shields will be at least as restrictive as those once equipped off the Exchange. Not sure if those are account-bound or character-bound once equipped since never owned one.
I was just sort of hoping for them to be account-bound once equipped to be more user-friendly. As you pointed out wait & see.

A good point at the end about strategically buying & what's most efficient depending upon how I want to use.
If they have no future plans to put these items into Lockboxes I'd love for them to clean up and add the TNG/DS9 Rifles without the holograms, the dust buster TNG Phaser pistol and the VOY compression rifle that fires as it did in the show (the rep one is not accurate and actually kinds sucks) into the Dil store.
We'll find out soon but I anticipate account bound on pick up and character bound on equip.
They want to preserve the market for lockbox shields (even if they are gonna depress it in the short term).

We'll find out tomorrow.

They want to preserve the market for lockbox shields (even if they are gonna depress it in the short term).
