Captain and ship types are utterly unrelated.

However yes, the KDF gets very few science ships, most of them are zen purchases, and Romulans are similar.

Originally when we still had the faction walls up for ships it was that Fed got Cruisers, Escorts, and Science Vessels while KDF got Battlecruisers, Raptors, and Raiders. When Romulans were introduced they got their own unique class: Warbird.

Also originally Fed was the PvE faction while KDF was the PvP faction. You couldn't even play a KDF until you hit like level 20 on a Fed. Over time they started fleshing out KDF more until it was a true equal faction to Fed, with a lv 1 start.

STO today is a much different animal than it was back in the day.

From a game mechanic point of view I have a hard time seeing any attachment of the career types and classes of ships we can choose.

The idea that tacs are supposed fly escorts, engies cruiser and scis sci ships has no basis beyond RP.

Hmm, was Picard ever engineering track? Memory Alpha lists he was a helmsman (tactical) and in the It's A Wonderful Life episode he was a science officer.

Basically the way things worked was if it wasn't something related to piloting in relation to the games pilot spec or science usually his first indication of not knowing how to handle something was asking Data about it. Being Picard was mostly a Science officer besides that if he needed a more abstract line of information he would go to Geordi or Worf and then get Riker's 2 cents.

This, with maybe a little addition.
    Tacs can fly anything.
Engis as well, but they are best when using energy weapons. (e.g. Nadion)
Scis, however, should ideally not run on low aux power, cause some of their captain abilities also scale with aux, making an aux-based wizard boat the ideal choice. Torpedo boats need very little power, letting you run on high aux as well. If you want to use a sci in an energy weapon ship, however, you will probably need to spend some of your available resources on power level increases.

I think Archer, Kirk, and Picard would be tacs in cruisers, Sisko an engi in an escort, and Janeway sci/sci.

It would be wonderful to be able to buy a seating, slots and skin and put your own ship together. You're a SCI, you want a Defiant, you can't have the cannons, but you can have the SCI seating. You're TAC, you want an Intrepid...but there will be compromises, etc.

That would be fun, but would go against the business model for STO. Ships are what pay to keep the game running, so build-a-bear ships would need to be priced insanely high to cover the lost ship sales.

Well, if you had to keep buying their latest console, trait, skin design, vanity shields, etc...it would satisfy everyone. You get to fly the exact ship you want and they get money for you to do it.

The T5 Science vessel for KDF back in the day was the Gorn Varanus Fleet Support Vessel. You can still get it for free using a ship requisition token. (I guess they figured that Klingons didn't care much for science so left much of that to the Gorn.) Though I think I recall something about the Birds of Prey (Raiders) originally being intended to be the science ships. They didn't have secondary deflectors, but then again, back in 2013 when I first played, nothing else did either. Aside from that ship, your "free" options would also include fleet ships, including the Fleet Ketha Recon Raptor T6, Fleet Balth T6, and Fleet Naj'sov T6. Science characters back in the day could fly the Vo'cuv which was probably the most popular pick for T5 science ship. (At one time it was the only free carrier ship you could get too.)

I do agree the KDF could use more Klingon science ships though. Romulans and Jem'hadar could use more ships in general. (Especially the Jem'hadar.)

Edit: Oh yeah, there's also Tier 3 and 4 Gorn science vessels for KDF.

Romulans have a single science ship with 8 console slots and cannot be upgraded, which makes it T4 (not T5, like the wiki says). Klingons have a carrier at the same level, which is technically a science ship, but has hangars instead of a SecDef. They also have a T5 sci ship, secdef and all.

But this lack of science ships isn't just limited to their ship choices while leveling. If you've paid any attention to their single-use admiralty cards, you'll notice that KDF and Romulan factions have no science-ship cards outside of non-faction specialty ones, which means science-focused missions are often a problem because they get so few sci-focused cards compared to federation captains (who have multiple pure-science options to choose from). It's like the designers completely forgot that non-fed admiralty missions require ships with good science scores, too.

Yeah I know that well. One of the best purchases I ever made from admiralty card standpoint was the mega bundle of multimission explorers. It has proven to be extremely valuable over the years for my KDF characters, before the wall fell to let them use any ship. Before that it was extremely painful to try and handle science admiralty scores as KDF.

I know why they did it...they couldn't be bothered to fulfil that, so they just allowed the KDF to use Federation ships. "Oh, you can have a science vessel! It's just that is has to be a Federation one".

what would be cool is of they made a BOP that instead of the tactical console slots, they made them universal, the boff seats universal, and the experimental weapon interchangeable with a secondary deflector. Probably a nightmare to code but it would give the KDF a pretty cool sci boat

That's a fun idea. Like with the universal seating it might have 1-2 fewer console slots but with the flexibility of them being universal.
