A question about Klingon Academy (the game, not the location)

For anyone who's played the game...is the Cohesive Fused Deuterium Irradiation Cannon a cannon like its name suggests, or a beam? The description of the weapon makes it sound like it could be either, and I can't look it up on Youtube because no one's made any videos showcasing it...or any other advanced weapon, for that matter.

Huh... I just tried to look it up on Memory Beta, which tends to have things from games and books... and... nothing. What class was it mounted on again?

I don't know - all I know is it's a Romulan weapon that they've apparently used since the Earth-Romulan war, according to its description.

Ok...according to the KA manual (I actually have a copy of the game), the CFDIC was equipped on three classes, the Imperium Heavy Battlecruiser, the Gladius Frigate, and Preax Escort.

And it sounds like it is KINDA like a cannon, described as "little more than a directed fusion explosion". And the book talks about a bolt.
A side effect of the weapon is the intense radiation from the bolt itself.

So... it SOUNDS like its a bolt firing weapon that unleashes deuterium plasma on the brink of a fusion reaction.

Yeah, and the Yamato Cannon from Starcraft is also described as a directed fusion explosion...and it shows up as a bolt ingame but a beam in cinematics - that's why I want to know for sure what the CFDIC actually fires.

Unfortunately... that's as far as I can go on information for you Shadow. Its probably bolt firing, but I can't verify with in game footage.

Well, if you own the game, couldn't you load a skirmish and check? If I owned a copy, I'd just check it myself, but I don't and there's no way to acquire a legal copy at an affordable price anymore, since GOG doesn't carry it.

Not installed, and I don't think it likes Windows 7. Think I tried once and it pretty much said "no". Sorry.

So for now... assume bolt firing.

I read that you need something called "Klingon Academy Combined Patch " that came out a few years ago to get it to run on a modern system. I have no idea how well that works though.

A few years ago I ran Daggerfall via DOSBox from the original CD and it worked as well as that game ever did (it was so buggy that it still holds the record for the number of patches necessary to get a local CD based game to run).

That's why Daggerfall Unity exists - people were tired of how much frustration trying to get the original version to work caused...and Bethesda shows absolutely no interest in remastering any of their old games, so the community has to do it themselves.

True. They don't even seem to have much interest in bringing in much from the older games into ESO though there is enough to get some of the feel.

Using the old ten question character generation I used to end up with sorceress characters most often, with a few other mage types less often, and the occasionally archer, but you cannot even do an Arena/Daggerfall style sorceress in the game (what they call Sorcerer in ESO was the old mainline Mage class).

The original sorcerer/sorceress class was an intrinsically hybrid class that had to transmute magical attacks against them into magick to fill their reserve (which gave them a bit of protection since only part of the incoming spell hit), and so usually used a sword or other weapon rather than a staff, and the ones that happened to use a staff could use it as either a magick aid or a mundane blunt weapon equally well. The Dunmer were the best sorcs back then.

Also, I did a lot of Khajiit Nightblades but I prefer playing the Ohms (desert elf) or Ohmes-Raht (neko) type over playing the Cathay (anthro) type which is the only playable type in ESO (though I do have one, a Warden pet wrangler).

It is seemingly impossible to get the game to run on a modern machine, but for what it's worth I found this forum entry from the Klingon Academy 2 Mod for Star Trek Armada 2 (I think?). Here, a user tried to change the visuals to resemble the original Klingon Academy effects better and they turned the CFDIC into a "unibeam" - meaning a continous beam of about 6 seconds duration.

Here's the link tot he thread https://www.fleetops.net/forums/modifications/unibeam-issues-12914

The only interest Bethesda had in remastering any of their games was the Skyrim Special Edition and it was released almost 5 years after Skyrim instead of doing it to one of their older games like Daggerfall or Morrowind.

I personally don't mind if they decide to not remaster their older games, because the community's already doing it for Daggerfall and Morrowind, via Daggerfall Unity and MWOpen, respectively...I just wonder if any group's planning community remakes of Arena and Oblivion.

And as for older Star Trek games - if none of them get remastered, at the very least they need to be made available for purchase SOMEWHERE and also at least worked on enough to where they function on modern systems.

Yep, Todd Howard himself has explicitly stated he doesn't like the idea of remastering old games, and like them to stand on their own as they were.

skyrim SE only really exist because it used the same engine as Fallout 4, so it was much easier to backport the lighting upgrades from Fallout 4 into Skyrim SE. Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, all use a different engine, so you can't just do it easy.

True, and Daggerfall didn't even use a true 3D engine, it was sprite-based on a 3D map instead of 3D modeled. And Arena, didn't even use the 3D maps, it has roughly the same kind of level structure as the early Doom games.

I noticed Steam is having a game sale so I went and checked it for Klingon Academy on the off chance it could be on sale. They don't list it at all unfortunately (they do have Starfleet Academy though it is not what the OP is looking for).

I'd love to be able to play Elite Force again, with the Expansion that I never got. Also would love to get a version of SFC3 that doesn't freak out with anything over DirectX9.0c, a working copy of SFC2, maybe also SFC2: Orion Pirates...
