depends on your definition of troll. if you are an average player you will run into the "leet" players who will tell you to stop playing "their" game because you suck and can't one-shot tac cubes. and that will happen sooner than later, mark my words

Most of the trolls in this game are the political ones who show up in major election years trying to spread political propaganda in zone chat in ESD, the seasonal event areas, and sector space in an effort to influence the elections.

Ingame trolls who sabotage TFOs and whatnot are actually rather rare compared to some other games I have been in, especially Tera (people playing Elin would get some major harassment in the early days) and APB:Reloaded (in which tolls would shoot their teammates in the back to get an easy boost to their kill ratio, and other nastiness), and Second Life used to have a major troll infestation too (too many types to enumerate here), mostly before 2008, but they have been exterminated for the most part.

There used to be more common trolls but now a days it's pretty rare. You'll usually only see a troll when some jerseys decides they feel like ruining people's rp fun

Oh, just pop along to ESD...there are threats, violence, I saw someone getting reported by everyone for racism! ESD has always been a hot-bed for hate and very twisted conversation.

You can occasionally ask a game-related question, but expect to be ignored or more often than not, backlash.

It's a bit like asking a question on Jerry Springer.

They're not a problem most of the time. The usual political/NRA/conspiracy and religious trolls which ESD gets the brunt of in chat, but it's easily ignored. Beta Quad gets a little heated sometimes during from 7pm GMT to about 4am.

In missions, you'll get the occasional AFK'ers (mostly during events) and these are the ones that can ruin the experience mostly.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

I remember a time when my community was still young and small. We were often disturbed in PvE or fleet foundings.

As we gained strength they became less and less of an issue.

Last time Nabreeki tried to ruin IGA he made a total fool out of himself lol.

If one seeks the strength of good communities like some fleets and especially the DPS league, if one gives in to power creep for your builds, you have a hart time to even take notice of trolls in STO.

11 years under my belt here and I never had this kind of problem. The community in game is usually pretty welcoming and helpful. And when things go wrong is usually due some new player not paying attention to what is going on but that is totally fine.

Just for the record, this is behavior that the DPS league does not support in any way. People have been removed for this type of behavior, so please don't think that any DPS oriented player is all under the same umbrella. The league resources are designed to help and encourage people not berate them for playing 'wrong.'

This has largely been my experience as well, and this problem is certainly not unique to STO. Trolls will troll anywhere they can find an audience.

Also agreed, though having to 'give in to power creep' isn't really a requirement.. that's always player optional. Pete and I are part of an armada/community that invites people along regardless of gear or DPS output. Just some of us find building up power to be fun.. it's not for everyone.

I don't find it appropriate to call people talking politics trolls (also NRA trolls? What in the world is that?) They are just talking, discussing, seriously or not, and that has no effect on you.

Now, I don't want to see it in game either, so minimizing ESD chat is definitely worth doing if you can't just ignore it.

People actually going around and disrupting the game experience is legitimately hard to find in the game largely because its hard to do in game, so I wouldn't worry.

Just don't read Zone Chat. I think it actually causes brain damage. As for Trolls in TFO's? I have never encountered any. At the worst you will get players confused about the new instances. This is especially strong this week with the new TFO out there, that has a mechanic that while simple and easy to understand, is not really explained. ("Take the Green thing to the Green Thing! Rinse Repeat!") So there may be a slight learning curve until people figure it out.

I am the ONE and ONLY... but I haven't played in months. I am having far too much fun over poking at Neverwinter about their current crisis. After my trip to Texas this June, I will teach you my Picard maneuver, where I fly the ship backwards while shooting at the enemy.

Now stop impersonating a hamburger and go play the game!

As mentioned by others, the only real trolling I've encountered was in IGA. And if you had 1 or 2 other non-trolling players who knew what they were doing in a PUG, there wasn't much they could do anymore besides looking like a santa clown.

Zone chat is an issue that solves itself, repugnant as it is.

True, not everyone who discusses politics is a troll (I end up getting sucked into those chat debates myself though I know I shouldn't, for instance). The trolls are the instigators who deliberately manipulate chat to get a political furball going either by cold-declaration of some statement sure to get people jumping on it arguing or by twisting a conversation about lore that happens to touch on economic or political science (though the latter can happen on its own without trolls too of course).

It is a different type of trolling that is often instigated by professionals and gets its name from the infamous Troll Factory (though not all of the professional ones were from that organization either). I have had training in spotting that sort of thing and it was rather interesting watching the bot wranglers (once very common other social media but not as common in game chat) and tag teams at work, though I am glad it is over for the next year or two at least since it is aggravating and often toxic.

the toxic type of troll is pretty rare in sto. but at the same time i also suspect the average age of sto players is a bit higher than that of other online games HE HE!

Yeah the difference between a troll profession or otherwise is that they're intentionally steering the conversation into toxic grounds for lolz or general disruption, as those who are just passionate about certain things tend to have an ideology that makes sense in a vacuum and they aren't intentionally steering things into arguments that are toxic.

I dunno maybe it's just my time zone but I've yet run into a "my DPS is bigger then yours therefore you're worthless as a human being" type of troll in STO, while they're fairly common in WoW LFR/LFG (interestingly they're almost non-existent in Mythic though I wonder why ;) ) and I pretty much exclusively do PUG TFOs in STO due to my limited playtime. In my experience those type of trolls tend to be at best a bit better then average and are acting like they're God's gift to gaming to try to disguise that fact, most actually good players I've met are good in more ways then one, including being helpful and frankly not caring what DPS you do.

I have flown with you enough to answer this question for you. You're just not a bad player. Why would anyone yell at you?

Don't get me wrong, they shouldn't be doing it to anyone, but that's why you haven't seen it.

the only trolling i experienced in game so far is when some friends were trying to RP a crew on shore leave some person kept following us around and using the magic ball that made everyone dance. it was kind of funny but we had to go to a difference instance to get away
  • mysonne1mysonne1 Member Posts: 74 Arc User
I have not run into many since 2010 to be honest. This game has one of the most accepting playerbases in any MMO. Help is only a question away as 99.5% of all people give you a non troll response.

this is what I was talking about in my second paragraph.

FYI there is a device in the GPL shop that will cancel the auto-dancing part, but it does not counter the lights or music.

hey thanks that could be very useful!
