farming end game gear for missions?

do you have to farm marks to spend in the reputation tab to get better gear in order to just do normal quests?

You don't have to have reputation gear to do normal missions. But the reputations generally have better gear. If you;re looking for a decent space set the sol defense set is good, but you have to play the mission 'midnight' (at the end of the Iconian war arc) three times (there is no warp core). Some missions offer pretty good equipment. The mission 'the core of the matter' offers neutronium-based personal armor, it's pretty good but you have to play it several times if you want to equip your character and bridge officers with it. Others have very rare consoles and weapons.

Most players would say it's the other way: they finish Missions to get starting gear, then use other gear later to fine tune - including rep, fleet, and other equipment as is being recommended.

If you're having trouble in Frozen, which enemies? Most of the fighting there is on ground. It's also definitely easier if you choose to help Obisek rather than arrest him.

The Tal Shiar Thalaron mines are definitely potent. I don't recommend rushing in with a melee weapon. Fight from range, and bring Science officers with healing abilities to keep you alive against Hyperonic Radiation.

Finally, I'd check your difficulty settings. No real benefit to playing most episodes on anything other than Normal until you really know what you're doing.

I'm baffled I guess, I don't remember any space combat in that mission. But good that you got through it. Usually I'm low level when I play that one since I usually go in order. And I do remember the Tal Shiar ground troops being difficult at first.

Ah. It sounds like a Build issue. If you would show us what your current Build is, then you could get a lot of help. You can do so by filling out this and then posting the link:

I'm going to echo what some of the others have said, this sounds like a build issue more than it does an issue with the game itself. I would invite you to post the details of your build in some way so we can see what you have for your skills, traits, items used on your ship, and down the line. Once we know where you're at, we can do more than giving generalized advice. If it does turn out to be the build, don't worry about it because there is no build so bad it can't be fixed, and we've probably done similar when we were still learning.

A big thing people generally aren't prepared for if they haven't kept a decent track of their gear and upgrades is the fact that the stats of the enemy NPCs and difficulty curve of the missions can take a dramatic jump once you hit some of the later episodes, usually around the delta quadrant stuff. The game also doesn't do that well in explaining build synergy to people. It doesn't explain as well as it could what abilities pair well with others and doesn't always give you an idea of what works well with what. One can learn that by reading tooltips as well as trial and error, but that takes a good while and can hamper new players by trying to put too much on them too quickly.

'build' issue when it has worked perfectly fine 1 level ago. will just have to keep grinding for gear

I know you don't want to hear it, but 1 level should not be making or breaking your ability to progress like that. A basic cohesive build with mk xii very rare gear from missions should be able to complete 95% of the content in game. For that matter mk xii greens can do well. You say you've had problems, okay fine we believe you. One's build is the most likely culprit for why they are having issues. So the logical choice is to see where you are with your build and eliminate that as an issue. If your build turns out to be fine, that's great. It means we can then move on to other things such as your strategy for approaching said foe. Are you letting them hit you with something that does alot of burst damage, are you firing on them while they have a feedback pulse up, are you firing into something like a voth reflection shield, or what have you.

If you legitimately want help, we don't care to give you that help. But if you're going to just dismiss everything we say and not even try to work with us, then there's nothing we can do. We ask you about your build not to shame you, but to eliminate that as a possible issue. We don't know what your build looks like and for all we know it could be perfectly fine. However based on our past experience with other folks who have had similar issues, the issue was usually their build in a majority of cases coupled with flawed tactics. We've all been there so we're not shaming you. If it's simple build adjustments needed, then you'll know. If it turns out to be a bug, then that means me firing a bug report up the chain to the devs so it can be fixed for everyone. However if you're not willing to work with us there's nothing we can do.

There are a few times on levelling up that NPC's get a new ability to counter so the single level gain can have a bigger impact. Not usually something that will hurt even a bodged together build but could potentially cause problems for a newer player that's not run missions enough to spot the quirks of the game.

There are chunks of the game where it's all space so a sudden jump onto a ground map can create a hurdle due to lack of gear but that shouldn't really be much of an issue if someone's at the 50+ stage for the rep grind unless they levelled up purely off eventing.

I actually can see it being just 1 level. Specifically, ranking. Levels 40, 50, 60, and 65 can be a spike in enemy difficulty, because often enemies do gain new abilities when you the player hit that level. It's most noticable in solo Mission play.

And the things that can help offset it are build and combat tactics.

If they had a full round of DOffs and Admiralty ready to turn in and played one mission, it is possible that they jumped to 65 from multiple levels below, maybe even five. Then they got hit with outdated Gear, no Ship Mastery or Specializations. Then they tried to play a new mission just like they have been up to that point and got their butt handed to them due to the difficulty spike. I can see it happening.

Then we can help you to synergize your Gear, Abilities, Duty Officers, Skills, and suggest a Specialization Tree that will benefit what you are looking to do. We are here to help, but you have to show us what you currently have so that we know what advice to give you because different goals (like a Cannon Boat, a Torpedo Boat, a Science-Magic Boat, etc) absolutely require different pieces.
