Is there a good list of free scaling mission reward gear anywhere?

aesicaaesica Member Posts: 736 Arc User
See thread title.

I'm basically looking for a solid list of all gear that freely scales either automatically as you level (infinity) or gear that can be upgraded for free via the upgrade system up to Mk XII. Ideally gear that's easily available from story mission rewards. For whatever reason, some unique mission reward gear scales/upgrades freely, such as the Quantum Phase set, Chroniton Split Beam Rifle, etc while others (Nah'kul ground set) do not. Of all these, I'm most interested in personal shields and personal armor since these seem to be pretty scarce compared to ground weapons and space gear.

So does this list exist, or am I going to need to make it from scratch? :)

There are a few scattered in the later missions. Got the Bajoran Set, there are 2 Quantum Phase sets, there is the Nausicaan set, I think the resonant set has that ability also same with the Tzenkethi set. here are a few that have the free upgrade to MK12.

I have the resonant set, it does have the free upgrade. I have no idea about the Tzenkethi though since I don't have it.

That is what I thought wasn't quite sure because I never used that one early on.

Here's a relatively complete list of all the mission rewards

I believe every mission set will level up for free to mk 12, and almost all unique consoles do as well. I don't think any unique weapons do or other unique shields/engines.

Most event stuff should also level up for free to mk 12 or some to 14.

Yeah, there are few (if any) episode rewards that don't increase to mk 12 for free. Maybe some of the unique stuff from Romulan episodes and things like the special Tetryon weapons that can be obtained from episodes in the Nimbus arc.

But I'm pretty sure almost all the more recent stuff in episodes that were added after the upgrading system, can be improved to mk 12 at no cost.

From Iconian War on, most level up freely. Although I think the newest non-set Klingon Civil War rewards don't.

be nice if we could buy out repeat missions to get the matching sets. (not real cash mind you, EC or DIL only)

Another good idea for a potential Dilithium-sink that Cryptic always seems to be interested in.

I'd say definitely make the mission need to be ran-through & completed once but after that allow the option.

Most of the Story Mission Gear isn't "Free Upgrades". Instead in most cases you can simply get the better mark version by replaying the mission at a higher level up to MK XII. But we'll let you in on a little secret. It costs much less Dil and Upgrade Tokens to get it to Gold Level XV if you start it at a lower level. If you work on boosting the quality to Gold while it's still level VI say, it may take 2 shots to get it maxed. Then you just bump it up the tier levels (preferably on an upgrade weekend for maximum cost efficiency). You don't need to waste 10-15 upgrade tokens trying to get it from Ultra Rare to Epic at XV.

Haha, I tried that with the nanopulse pistols and they're now Mk XII and still blue. Oof! While I know you *can* luck out like that, it's basically gambling and, if it fails, then you've spent a bunch of kits and dil on something you could've just run a mission for at max level. Sometimes worth the try though.

No, only some of it is free and that's the annoying part. There's no way to pick out the free-to-upgrade stuff from the paid upgrade stuff just by looking at their tooltips. It's been my experience while leveling my KDF recruit that the following gear can be freely upgraded: (think of this as my contribution to this thread!)
    • Resonant Disruptor Beam Array
    • Chroniton Split Beam Rifle
    • Vorgon Tetryon Discharge Prism*
    • Quantum Phase (offensive set)
    • Quantum Phase (defensive set)
    • Chronometric Polaron (offensive set)
    * The other items from this mission are NOT free to upgrade

And things that look like they might be upgradable, but absolutely are not:
    • Romulan Operative Personal Shield**
    • Na'kuhl Temporal Operative Personal Shield**
    • Romulan Imperial Navy Personal Shield**
    • Dielectric Oscillation Personal Shield
** I'm assuming the other item(s) from these missions are also NOT free to upgrade

Cryptic, you could've made this so much easier on everyone by sticking with the tried-and-true Mk Infinity system, then allowing the upgrade system to take over after reaching the right level, starting at Mk XII. Not sure why you guys had to change it to this more... "cryptic" system, but oh well.

Again, its primarily equipment sets like shields, deflectors, etc, and unique consoles that are free to upgrade, not weapons and not generic rewards.

It would be cool if people were willing to do testing to make a better list.

It's worth adding the Ancient Obelisk Technology set, two pieces from the Sphere of Influence mission. They are actually marked infinity and you don't even have to think about the free upgrade.

Also the white equipment from a tier 6 ship is mark infinity, though being common it may or may not be worth keeping it. The Galor-class Cardassian cruiser gives you four purple spiral wave disruptor beam banks that are marked infinity but you need to be level 40 to claim it. Same with the Andorian escorts and their wing cannons, though the wing cannons can only be used on the Andorian escorts.

Okay, just leveled up and I can confirm that these level up for free:
    * Antichroniton infused tetryon full auto rifle (from "Broken Circle")
    * Console - Engineering - Trellium D Plating (from "Ragnarok")
    * Console - Science - Temporal Disentanglement Suite (from "Butterfly")

Wish I knew about these before. :)

Tested a couple more on a different character. These also level up for free:
    * Kentari Mass-Produced Missile Launcher (from "Mirrors and Smoke")
    * Heavy Chronometric Polaron Turret (from "Time and Tide")

You can add the Temporally Shielded Datacore (from "Temporal Reckoning") to the list. :)

But the Polaric Modulator (from "Delta Flight") does NOT upgrade for free.
Likewise, the Counter-Command Multi-Conduit Energy Relay (from "Surface Tension") does not upgrade for free.

We can add the Nausicaan Energy Lance (from "Echoes of Light") to the list of free upgradables.

Corfield Mining Plasma Cutter (from "Storm Clouds Gather") does not upgrade for free.

One good thing about gear not leveling for free:

I don't think the free level up includes any chance for a quality improvement, while if you use a Phoenix upgrade the gear might go to UR or Epic on the way to mark XII.

Kobali Deflector Array (and presumably the other set items) from "Dust to Dust" does *not* upgrade for free.

it's also worth noting that the infinity gear usually is not effective as their crafted counterparts. for example if you have the twin blue phasers from the T1 Connie, you are a Captain, the blue phasers will not be doing as much damage as their VR Mk VIII counterparts. and although not a mission reward, those blue connie phasers can be stripped, the ship dismissed reclaimed until you get 8. and the en cost is what, 500?

The three ship parts from Dust to Dust are my favorite ship parts.
    https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Mission:_Dust_to_Dust
For the longest time, it was my fav ship, but the parts can go on any ship. Unless I am mistaken, the only way to get the Samsar and the engine is via the Phoenix Prize.

This ship offers one of the healingist ship out there. Adda few high level and Purple to Gold SIFs and a death screen will become an increasingly rare thing. YMMV

Cryptic made the T1 Connie, as well as all ships T4 (level 30) and lower, into a single per-character Dilithium purchase. So, you'd have to rebuy each time to get the two twin-Phasers if you don't already have the unlock. There is a way around it with a C-Store pack that has both the T6 Paladin and the T1 Connie, but that's 2000Z off sale IIRC.

Dust to Dust is too incredibly annoying and tedious to get through, I only did it once and refuse to do it again without the Samsar to get the complete set for, a ship which I have not been able to get so far for my Kobali alt. The rewards are just not worth the incredible pile of steaming BS which is that mission (it has to be the absolute worst designed one in the game),
