Science BOFF space skills not working

zepharynthezepharynthe Member Posts: 169 Arc User
LVL 15 Science Officer, Fed, Delta. Her Science BOFF's space skills show on the bars, but when in space combat they stay greyed out.
Tyson Rift
Hazard Emitters
Transfer Shield Strength

None of them are working.
Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

You're not a high enough level to use them yet. It's the same with all Boff's (with exception to where a ship bug allows higher level skills use).

The captain is a Lt Commander. The BOFFS are all lieutenants. The skills are either Ensign or Lieutenant level (T1 & 2). There should be no reason they shouldn't be operational.

Remember the captains start as Lieutenants with ensign BOFFS, T2 is Lt Commander with Lieutenant BOFFS. And yes, these BOFFS have all been promoted.

Your level is not high enough to unlock the slots the abilities fall into on the ship.
A display bug is letting you see abilities that are not active yet.
Has nothing to do with your Boffs skill levels but your characters level allowing unlocks on the ship.

Ehm, guys. The OP obviously has been around for a while (since his name doesn't have the #with random numbers).

There is an issue that causes Boff powers not to be selectable. Been reported, some people have also presented their findings there:

I've been experiencing this on and off, too, but usually a game reboot would fix it - though from what I can see many others have not been so lucky.

Also, ensign abilities are always unlocked, so to claim that the toon is not high level enough to be using them is entirely false.

Except the OP did not explicitly say that these WERE ensign level abilities.

    Except that they did:

So, while the lieutenant ones could prove problematic, the ensign ones certainly aren't.

It's a T2 Rhode Island Class Science refit ship. It has 2 science BOFF slots each with 2 slottable science skills. Now, I just noticed that NEITHER of the skills in the left position even show in the available skill list when in space. You can't load either into a space on any bar. So looks like the ship itself is bugged, and it's a crown store ship. But you KNOW you'll never get any kind of response from the devs about it.

Try changing ship if you can then, and see if that fixes it - though be prepared to have difficulties assigning skills anyway. It's been months and every time I change ship, there's at least one BOFF that's problematic.

Also, keep an eye on your traybars: skills have a nasty habit of reappearing out of thin air even if you remove them - my latest delta recruit was plagued by the damned rift of the event set: I would unslot the ability and it would reappear at *every* map change from ground to space. The only work around I've found is to slot it on a bar that I never use, so it doesn't pop up where it shouldn't.
Things have gotten progressively worse since they "revamped" how loadout works... because of course, instead of fixing the problem they change how the system work and the bugs just multiply.

Just a random thought but...do you have a deflector equipped? If so, try unequipping and re-equipping it - much like how not having an impulse engine equipped prohibits use of full impulse, not having a deflector equipped will disable most if not all science powers - a legacy thing from the very first iteration of the skill system that Cryptic never fully removed (unless they did so fairly recently as a stealth change).

And sometimes the game can glitch to where it doesn't think you have one equipped even though you do.

You could try swapping to a different ship and going into space.
Docking and swapping back to that ship and going into space.
It is a pita but it has fixed things for me before.
I hope it gets sorted for ya either way

Actually, I put her in her Advanced Cardassian Intel Science vessel and everything's working fine. It was the other ship that was bugged. Not like CBS or Cryptic cares though.
