Promoships as Account unlock

I think that the rare Promoships from the R&D and Duty Officers should be for the whole account, because of the rarity of the drops from the packages.

Been suggested time and again to have an unlock token but until cryptic fall out of love with gambleboxing as a primary revenue stream they won't change it.

There will be some very flimsy excuses involving canon but if you look at the game with the off-canon ships and weapons being used they lose a ton of weight.

Alternatively, I would suggest a transfer token. You buy it in the C-store for X zen, and you use it on a character with a promo/lockbox/lobi ship. Using the token would remove the ship from your roster, as well as removing the trait and console from the character. You would then get an account bound ship box that you could transfer to any other character on your account.

I do not see how this idea would do anything but earn cryptic more profit. I for one would probably by at least 2 straight away.

You guys understand Cryptic has heard you right ?

The promo ships are trickling into the Mudd store. Don't expect to get new ships in the store... just like older event ships end up in mudds when they hit the year old or so mark. You can expect most promo ships to hit mudds in some 3 pack after they are 2-3 years old. That might ramp up in the future though. It seems pretty clear Cryptic has been trying to deemphasis the gamble in the game.

We have one 3 pack in mudds right now that contains one promo pack ship as an unlock.
So far we have seen the
    Jem Strike ship
    Amarie Smuggler's Heavy Escort
    Hur'q Vedcrid Hive Dreadnought Carrier
All three of those ships have been offered as account unlocks... of the 4 Mudd ship packs offered so far 3 have included a promo ship. (and Cryptic has offered account unlocks for a total of 12 gamble ships)

Cryptic has decided how they are going to be offering account unlocks for promo ships. So keep an eye on mudds and when the ship you like shows up in a pack be prepared to purchase while its offered. They aren't going to be offering a free for all... they are clearly going for a limited time 3 pack only setup.

That's not what these people want. They want to only spent 2-3k Zen for unlock tokens because that's what they feel the price is, nevermind however much they spent to actually get the thing. Or the whole "I don't want to spend $150 to only get one thing", yada ya (like if they only wanted one ship out of the three in the bundle). "Then don't" is all I can say to that.

While I agree on this, someone high up at Cryptic or PWE has ruled it out except for purchases through Mudd's Market. It's been a frequent request since the very first Promo ship was released, at one point in the past year or two they apparently did some research into the numbers that would be involved with an account unlock purchase option being made available in the C-Store or something, but the last time Kael asked about it he was given a definitive 'No." as his answer. So it simply isn't happening anytime soon, if ever.

Or that the starship mastery and special console are accountunlocked, but then maybe for all ships from Promo and the other lockboxen.

Currently at least some whales buy multiple copies of a ship to get the mastery on all characters so that isn't likely to happen either.

Some good parts of STO are that there is no $10+ a month sub, no $20+ expansion packs, no "season pass", no limits at all on playing for free.

The bad part is that gambleboxes are a major part of what pays for the game in place of that, so Cryptic isn't likely to cut prices aside from moving less popular ships into Mudd's Market. Account unlocks, transfers, etc. are a price cut.

    A: I agree.

B: It probably won't actually happen.

C: If it does, expect to pay for it (like the "account unlock" token some have suggested) on a per ship basis.

D; because of "B", it's probably a better use of time to ask them to make legendary/mudd's versions of whatever specific ships you actually want.

Mugs market is only an option for someone that's is desperate to get a ship and is so intent on getting it they don't care about the giving away a kidney or firstborn child to get the thing.

The cheaper option for traits from faction specific ships have had the door slammed on them with ships being available to every faction now. So even though there was a precedent in game for trait only unlock tokens that's now pretty much dead moving forward.

You apparently misunderstood what this thread is about. It's not about "make lockbox ships less expensive", it's "make them account unlocked". That's what mudds does. Cheaper has absolutely nothing to do with this specific discussion.

And just for the record, even though "make them cheaper" wasn't actually the OP's request: mudds IS cheaper than lockbox/promo ships. The new 'wormhole' bundle could give you a promo ship AND a lockbox ship for $150 (sale price) for your entire account, while a promo ship alone would cost over $200 if you are going the "buy zen/keys, sell for EC, buy ship on exchange" route, for a single character unlock.

And it's an investment I don't regret, either. Appropriate given that this most recent one involved a Ferengi ship...

You are absolitely correct about that, i was actually going to buy the bundle, but i want the D7 more... if not, i would be using it right now..

Yea, still I thought the Mudd's Market choose your Bundle's were very fair.

Like the current one Mudd's Outta This Wormhole Bundle, you’ll be able to purchase it until April 1st for 50% off, at 14,750 Zen

That's roughly 50.00 a ship for 3 that were either Lockbox/Promo Ships at one point; if you get at that deal.

So I can't say they aren't being considerate, but these bundles only present themselves so often...

They keep claiming they will look into it but they wont...the only one way you're going unlock a account wide promo ship you want is to hope it ends up in one of those Mudd's market bundles then fork out a ton of zen

With Mudd's in mind (as per discussion above) it'll be interesting to see what else they put out there.

Thus far the 'Prize' ships that they've put in there have been the ones that are, arguably, not the most desirable. That isn't to say that they're not good in their own rights - they're just not necessarily the ships that most would pick if they'd won a prize box.

So it'll be interesting to see if any of the more highly sought-after ships from the prize boxes find their way into Mudds at some point.

They will when they have targets to hit. It should be pretty obvious to anyone that Cryptic isn't completely stupid. When they want consistent sales we get a trickle of decent stuff in leg packs and mudds. They also throw sales on to drain zen before hand.... or phoenix events to drain dil ect. When they clearly have some sales numbers they have to hit internally for their owners or the IP holder, they throw out the good stuff.

Yes at some point Cryptic will sell people what they want for more money then they really wanted to pay... and first they will do their best to get people to burn their saved funds.

So I think I'm saying wait till you see the promos aimed to destroy stored wealth. Then you know something tempting is coming to one of the stores shortly. :)

Depending on whether my firstborn has annoyed me recently, that doesn't sound a bad option. He's 22 though, I reckon the trade in value is low.

Actually, they DID look into it, and the final answer Kael got on the subject was a definitive 'No.'

Was it Keal who says No, or was it someone higher who said No. Because he is the Community Manager not CEO or marketing Manager, who decided it. That was the point of the Question earlier.

When speaking publicly on livestreams or other media, Kael is acting as the voice of the company and passing on the official company agenda or policy.

He doesn't make the decisions, he only communicates them to us. For this it would be someone high up at either Cryptic or possibly even PWE that made the decision.
