Game over 10 year old...yet NO PET TAB or extra Storage tabs?

starcruiser#3423 starcruiser Member Posts: 1,200 Arc User
Yes... it has been asked several times. Other improvements launched come at times with the phrase "Players asked for it". Yet, this keeps being ignored.

We did get an R&D tab but what about a Pet tab or some other sort of storage tab?

Devs please listen up...if you put this up for profit on the C-Store, I'm sure some of us PET collectors would be willing to pay a EXTRA $$$ price for it.

The problem might be with their metrics, i.e. how many people have a large collection of pets, how many people use pets frequently.

If they want to cover the development and maintenance costs they either need a large enough number of people who are hardcore enough to put up cash monies for the tab, or to decide the usage would be high enough to be worth it as a quality of life freebie.

I have no idea what those numbers are.

The Devs actually have said in the past they would like to do something to address non combat pets and how much space they take up, however it hasn't been a priority. It was on the whiteboard though.

Idealy though I feel that turning non combat pets into an item you use to unlock a summon power that is accessed on a separate tab of the "spellbook" would be nice, but I don't know how difficult that would be to code in. The easiest solution is probably making a separate tab specifically for pets, like how there's a tab specifically for crafting mats. But again I don't know how the code is.
The fact remains though that if they continue to add non combat pets, they will have to address pet storage in some way.

Yeah, have not bothered with non-combat pets for years now. Waste of my limited space.
I'd assume the easiest way would be a Reclaim page like we have for event stuff. Not perfect, but at least its something we know they can do already.

The Secret World managed pet storage very well. You don't need an inventory item, just a list of all the pets and a simple binary for each one for whether you have it or not. From a database standpoint its way more efficient, as there is no item to track anymore, just a 1 or 0 on a list you can expand as you make more pets. You just need to work on the UI to interpret the list and how to expand it on the back end.

Of course, I suggested copying TSW on this years ago, but it obviously has never happened.

Well depending how the underlying game engine is built it might not be possible to do it that way, without knowing how the code works it is at best highly arrogant of us to assume something would be easy for Cryptic to do, for all we know it could demand massive rewrites to the scripts handling the database (or not, we simply don't know for sure).

Programming wise, I don't know how it works but accolades are also "singular" in that they do not have stacks and they are not items in your inventory. Perhaps pets can be purchased as unbound boxes. Once you "open" them, much like you open a ship, then the pet is added to your pet list just like accolade titles. You could then select which pet to show from your pet list and have a single activator in your power tray to show off your current pet that you've selected from your list.

I admit that in all likelihood, this is a nonsense idea and that I just don't understand the programming. Maybe it takes up the same amount of "storage" on the server side but if it doesn't and this is a viable idea. Maybe the devs should look into it. By comparison, there are TONS of accolades and accolade titles that players have and CAN have with zero apparent server storage issues.

That sounds a bit like just turning the current pet items into an item that is consumed to bestow the summon power to the player. We already have this in a passive sense with personal traits from lockboxes. Maybe they can add that pet tab in the "spellbook" and convert existing pets into a consumable like the personal traits, and using it populates the Pet Page of the "Spellbook". It uses an existing system, and may cut down a bit on the inventory need to track the items in question.

The reason it isn't here is probably BECAUSE the game is 10 years old.

They added it in Neverwinter and yes it was just another (Tab) similar to R&D, where you could store your Pets and click one which one you wanted to Use while on Ground. I know Non-Combat Pet's were available 5+ years before being given to Neverwinter, so who can say the logic that exists on what to do or not sometimes.

There I think they gave everyone 20 slots with the option to buy more; yet I can't say if people greatly expanded the slots. So perhaps that had something to do with it? :o

All joking aside, it doesn't work like that. It has been made abundantly clear that those players 'asking' for pretty much anything are in the minority and not representative of what the larger playbase actually wants/spends money on. Therefore 'asking' for anything falls on deaf ears and even if they did listen and, my some miracle, reply it would only be to explain why it isn't happening.

I guess those who asked for F2P were in the minority too?. Way before STO was here before people used to fume why no STO would go F2P. Then what happened?

The idea of replacing pet items in the inventory with consumable items that bestow a summon ability might work on PC, but this would be a terrible idea on Console.

Unlike PC, we console players do not have a "spellbook" and the ability to choose which abilities get slotted. ALL available abilities are automatically slotted into radial menus, which are already cluttered with upwards of 20 abilities, useful ones and not. So if every pet was turned into summon ability, that ability would automatically get added to the radial with no way to removing it. As it is, you can remove a pet summon ability by storing the ability in the bank.

Since I don't collect them I never realized those non-combat pets ere such a "big thing" in STO I just always heard that some players enjoyed them.

For those that like to try to collect them all it makes sense to want a dedicated tab for the cosmetic pets.

It also makes sense as a couple of others have already stated that the personal & bank inventory probably makes-up a lot of resource drain, especially if everyone if utilizing much of it.

The move to a Free to Play model had absolutely NOTHING to do with players asking for it to happen.

I'm gonna have to side with Reyan on this one. Switching to F2P was not pressure from the community. It was a matter of survival. The original Publisher, I believe was Atari at the time, was basically ignoring the existance of STO, and content releases were rather sparse. I came in about 2 months before F2P, and if the content releases were like the release of the 2800 FE series... it was pretty bad. We had a bare bones Winter Event, a bare bones Anniversary Event, no Summer Event... it was a LOT of bare bones. STO today is in a FAR better position than it was around the F2P transition.

They'd probably have to come up with a separate system for Console since there are different systems in play. Obviously what works for PC wouldn't for Console, especially since we have different UIs. As far as I know there are things different between the two platforms that would warrant separate solutions to the same problem. So... trying to shut down the whole discussion based on "Can't do that on Console" is kinda... pointless I wanna say. Even if that wasn't your intention, the wording in your post basically says "don't bother because it won't work on Console so PC can't have it either."

From what I've gathered PWE buying Cryptic was essentially a matter of survival if not for the company at least for STO.

If Neverwinter got a pet tab, then maybe they have plans to port that feature to STO. Figuring out what to do for console might be delaying it, along with all the other stuff that's going on. (Sounds to me like console STO could use some UI work period. At the very least, an option to enable/disable individual "powers" could help clean up some of the clutter.)

The implementation of the unregulated online gambling has been a priority in STO for, too many, years now but they do seem to be shifting away from that lol into "whale" bundles.

Interesting thing about Cryptic's latest game that Magic: Legends or whatever, their in-game gambling seems to be a sort of "rumored" progressive added odds of winning gambling mechanic for every time you lose that I've been suggesting Cryptic use for STO for years. What a bunch of ... lol
