Back to game after 5 years

woppy1woppy1 Member Posts: 78 Arc User
Hi guys, I’m just coming back to the game after about 5 years away( put it this way I have 25k zen from my monthly stripend) I genuinely have forgot how to play so would it be best to start a new game from scratch to learn again so I’m not a hinderance

    Welcome back! :)

Take a deep breath and start slowly; and don't go on spending spree until you've relearned the ropes ;)

Not "to avoid being a burden", but because so very, very much has changed over the past five years, I would definitely recommend starting a new toon. You can choose from the starting storyline for a toon from 2409 Federation, 2409 Klingon Empire, 2409 Romulan (starting on an unaffiliated planet, then siding with the Romulan Republic after the Tal'Shiar attacks your world), TOS-era Fed, or DSC-era Fed (there's a DSC Klingon option, but that's a race, not a backstory - you have the same tutorial as any other KDF toon). Also, if you own any T6 ships on your account, the new toon can use one as soon as they clear the tutorial (some of the capabilities are locked out until later, but something with say a hangar bay can come in really handy on a few of those low-level missions!).

Also the metaplot will hold your hand for the first few levels, but once you've hit lvl 10 most of the arcs will become available to you (a few, that only peripherally impinge on the main plotline, are kept as extras until after you hit 65), so exercise caution in which missions you accept from that level on. The Lukari stories make the most sense, for example, if you've completed the Iconian arc first.

I have taken breaks from as little as 6 months to as long as 3 years. Each time I return, I tend to make a new character to relearn what I missed. That is what I recommend, that playing the game, going through episodes and asking questions and ignoring troll responses is the best way to re-learn. If you are not in a fleet already or your fleet is inactive, try to find a fleet that is willing to help, there are always many fleets recruiting and welcoming new/returning players. But most of all, just play and enjoy yourself

I recommend you create a Reman or Romulan character. We got the coolest ships over in the Republic. What's more we are neither self-righteous Fed bureaucrats trying to tell the rest of the galaxy what to do all the time, nor are we bloodthirsty Klinks too hung up on the antiquated notions of honor and warrior culture. We are smart, we are free, and we are willing and able to do whatever we must to survive and thrive while rebuilding our civilization.

It's worth starting new character(s) for the much improved tutorials and the handful of (sub)faction episodes before you merge into the shared episodes that all character play.

What brought you back? If it was Discovery, you can create a Discovery captain who starts out in that era before jumping forward. The TOS captain experience is fun too, with Chekov and Scotty (voiced by Doohan's son) showing up. As mentioned, the Romulan experience is very good and has the most faction-specific episodes.

You have plenty of character slots, so you don't need to pick just one to try.

Welcome back. My main suggestion would be save that zen until they bring back this bundle:

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/11355993-10th-anniversary-legendary-starship-bundles

It was originally released on the 10th anniversary but they bring it back a few times a year. If you ever wanted an end game connie that pack gives a you a chance to have every version of the connie, and they are account unlocks. Not to mention those other great ships :)

    First.. Welcome Back!

Zen aside, I would also recommend you try and take part in the current 'Voth Advance' event for your daily progress. While the overall reward (a flaming sword) is nothing terribly great, it is also the first part of a multi part even that reward you with a Lock Box or Promo ship of your choice. You could also select 2 free C-Store ships or 1500 Lobi.

You can find the event details here, if you want to check it out. Given that current EC value of Promo ships greatly exceeds the maximum you can list on the exchange, plus the fact that more and more choices are being pushed into these boxes, Promo ships are at an all time scarcity. For many, this will be the one opportunity to acquire one of these highly sought after ships. Luckily, you have returned at the start of this event, so you still have more then enough time to take part and get your reward.

That's good advice. I think it's too late to complete the Voth event itself and get the sword, but you can get some progress towards the meta-event / promo box ship.

There are 35 extra days over the 5 events, so you could get the meta-event reward even without making progress during this first event but it's better to make extra progress now so you keep more spare days for later.

Yeah, I haven’t done the math yet on rather or not you can still get the sword.. I don’t think you can. Honestly though, that’s no big deal.. at all. Just do the event every day to get daily progress.. still more then enough time to get the biggest reward in the history of the game. :sunglasses:
