Traits and consoles most of the time, but it also takes away any stress about unlocking a one-character ship on the wrong character. I've only had "wrong character regret" for one lock box ship but that's still an expensive mistake.
I prefer account unlocks but I'm also fine with single-character unlocks (despite that mistake). I own 10+ lock box & lobi ships that fit the theme of a particular character.
I have no problem with single unlocks, as i create the char for the ship, not the other way around, i just created a Reman female for the Dhailkhina ship that i just got.. and i'm happy with it.. It's from the Engle - What's it's name Klingon DSC ship family, and the hangar squadron is awesome.. i'm not interested in use that ship in other chars, even if it where account unlock, that ship IS for that char.. and that char only..
I’m waiting for it to come to console because all the reasons listed fall in line with my alts. I have a Rom/KDF that’s upset with the Fed and is on a mission of waging a one man war. I have a proud KDF that’s looking for spoils/trophies and a Fed that’s looking to expand his knowledge on Klingon and Romulan technology. Plus the traits always are a bonus.
Frankly, I wouldn't mind single character unlocks in the C-store if the price was reduced to around 1k. My main reason to unlock a ship is because it fits the theme and playstyle I have chosen for the character.

I echo this, largely. While most of my characters have a theme, sometimes narrowly down to a ship, sometimes I get one a ship that doesn't really work well for that character and would work better for another. Account wide unlocks allow me to make that switch.
And as I have a lot of alts, consoles can make that even more of a good thing. With the free T5 ship we were given, I took a long time deciding but ultimately grabbed the Mogh to have the console for the nice 2 piece set with the Kurak on any character that wants it.
Character unlocks don't allow that. I have to be absolutely, positively sure I want that ship on that character, and its probably the last ship they are going to fly outside of grinding new traits, because what a waste otherwise. Last anniversary I lucked out and won a Promo ship from the free boxes they gave us. I spent the better part of a week looking over the options and testing a few on Tribble server before finally deciding what I wanted to get. That was a painfully tedious process, but for the utter rarity of that ship, it had to be done.
Admiralty was a big reason, before the Klingon/Ferengi campaign nerfs. Nowadays, it is traits/consoles.
I do ships on a per character basis in the main, even C-Store ones. But, I do want ships to be account-wide, because sometimes you find that ship A works on one character, but not another...
I like the option to USE the ship any any faction appropriate character (where the ship is not blocked although I have unlock the 'faction free' option as I have a lvl 65 character of each faction (including the multiple Fed faction options - TNG, TOS and ST: D).
I actually hate 'grinding a ship' on a character just to unlock a particular ship trait for a character, but I have done that for my 'mail character of each faction - not so much for my alts.

I have one main and 2 alts (Rom and Disco Klingon) I have put ALLOT of resources in my main including lobi consoles from last year's mega event (too casual to grind lobi) so my main reason for account unlock boats is for my alts to have access to traits tbh.
My main is a jack of all trades but each alt is built around one ship.
I have 14 chars that I play with atm. I like having ships available depending on what I plan to do with them any given day. Especially now with ships of all factions available to all toons. Between my addiction to alts, I also want the extra admiralty cards.
If i have to destroy a character, I will loose the ship thats on that character permanently and I will then have to retrieve it again.
EX: when they have reruns/new recruiting devices, I do not want 50 people. I have 15 right now and thats tooo many, so I destroy one and recreate him from scratch so then I have the recruit device without having to add one more person to my roster. Then I have to work to get all the res necessary to purchase said ship AGAIN for that person. That is the reason I scrimp on lock box / ec / phoenix ships, Difficulty in replacing what cost way too much the first time around.
More options on what to fly with my characters, and
Ship costume parts.
edit: I pretty much only get ships for theme & appearance. Stats? Consoles? Traits? Meh, who cares. The important part is does it look good & does it fit the character?
(aside from all the free/event ones, of course)
Most of those options suck, so I picked "other." Feeling like I have to run some annoying event on every character, just in case I decide I want a given ship on a given character is pretty terrible, so account-wide removes that bit of stress and also adds a cool sort of New Game+ feeling to starting a new character.
I voted other but it's mainly for the combination of the first two options.
I'm a alt-o-hollic and I own a lot of ships, I like to give each character their own unique ship but that doesn't always mean I use the ships trait or console exclusively on the ship it came with.
I want all my Characters to have 300+ Ship Fleets so I can be wasteful at assigning ships to Admiralty Assignments.
Now, if I could take the time away from running Events and Endeavors to slot up Admiralty Assignments on my Characters, I could really rake in the Dilithium.

What would really help if cryptic would at least consider making the consoles/special weapons of ships acc wide.
I often run into situations where on some ships like the NX or the mirror strike wing escort we have multiple desirable stuff on it one would not want to use on the the same ship.
Think I answered why we are not getting this ever at the the same time. Mirror escort is particularly bad. Superb console for sci ships, superb experimental gun for escorts, superb trait for carriers. Thanks cryptic.

It is just my nature that when I am buying something from the shop in an MMO, I want to buy it for the account, not for a single character. If I buy something only for ONE character, then I have invested in that ONE character rather than in my account. I am now tied to that character and feel guilty if I switch to a different one down the line.
I buy things that acknowledge ME as the player, not the collection of pixels on the screen. This is why I like the account wide ship unlocks, this is why I would like to see account wide inventory and doff expansion options as well.

Reminds me of when someone at Cryptic had stated something emphasizing, "the player is the account or the account is the player," but very well said about the differences between account & character.
I used to care about single toon unlocks till they murdered PvP. Wont touch em anymore since I never roll trinity toons, so if I can't share a ship between toons, it's useless to me. I also DGAF about spec seats so most of these 'newer' specialty ships are just vendor trash to me.

This. Stats are entirely irrelevant for me, I make the ship work with what it got. Most important for me is a 'round' character with fitting aesthetics, play style etc.

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles
Oh that function of being able to decommission & reclaim later is vital, excellent point factor!
