I always go for a compromise between both stats and looks, but more of the looks, which is why I stopped using the Vaadwaur Juggernaut on my Fed.
Yes, it's a MW powerhouse, but the textures quality is not on par with the current ones, most visuals make it uglier, it looks like a flying brick, it looks like it has no opening for anything (hangars, escape pods, even windows) even if that's a recurring problem with non-Fed ships, and you can't use GW.

That's why I switched to the Ra'nodaire and later the Vedcrid. Both look great in their own way, have cool stats, and even if subsystem targeting -and inspiration abilities- are nearly useless in their current and likely never-to-be-tweaked state, it's balanced by some unique and useful other abilities (singularity abilities, battle cloak and equipping Drone ships for the Ra'nodaire ; the automated defense screens and recognized as a full carrier (so more available pets) for the Vedcrid).

For my KDF, I've been keeping my D4x, due to many possible cool-looking visuals on it, versatile universal stations and the beautiful wings animations during pilot maneuvers.

Fun. Why bother with anything else.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

I can't fly a ship that is ugly for long. It makes me physically cringe and hate playing the character. However, I also fly ships based on a theme or build I want to do in many cases, which is obviously based on their stats.

So something that illustrates this, I tried to fly the Qugh for a bit on one character, but ultimately broke down and bought the MW ships because I needed a full MW ship for the build, but the Qugh was just so ugly I couldn't stand it.

It's a little of both. I don't use ships with unfavorable boff layouts even if I like the look of them, but I also don't really use meta ships if I think they are ugly.

I build a captain to a theme. So I recently was able to get a Styx dreadnought, and I've built a DSC Terran themed character to fly it. The ship isn't the king of any niche. I don't go for a full meta build (I'll pick sets, weapons and modules that fit the theme, at least broadly speaking). It can be a challenge to get performance out of any ship with those constraints but I always manage to pull together a great build (I'm not winning any DPS contests) and there's a lot of satisfaction in making the whole thing work without compromising the theme too heavily.

I play mine for looks. My own ship the Suliban Assault Carrier looks like the Millennium Falcon and I named the ship thus.

Addendum: As an added bonus the Suliban Cell Fighters also look like Saiyan Attack Balls and their plasma beams are like small Kamehamehas.

All the reasons. Any reason at all!

Setting up a theme. Liking a design. Wanting a trait. REALLY just wanting a trait and be done with it, never using it again. Unleashing an actual monster. Crushing your enemies. Impressing your friends. Having enough Zen left to pick up something you thought is ugly but always wanted to try anyway. Throwing money into a river to see how it swims.

I've had all of the reasons and will continue to have them in the future.

Not just literally looks, though that is important, but rather that it looks good and fits the character's story.

Depending on what I can get it slushes one way or the other a bit though, and I have had to make (hopefully temporary) substitutions in a lot of cases. For instance, my Kobali currently flies a Sommerville which is a very poor fit Barbie wise, but so far the Phoenix token to get the Samsar for her has proven unusually elusive.

I have a Drow from way back (before STO came out) who I adapted as a "Vulcanoid" alien in the Romulan Republic who has a trapping, spider-themed style so I used some of the lobi from one of the event campaigns to get her an Iktomi.

My first STO character was originally from a tabletop campaign that combined some of the FASA Star Trek game with the DS9 game. Kind of similar to AoY here, it was a mix of 23rd century characters who were thrown forward (and in this case across timelines too) and ended up exiting the Bajoran Wormhole and some of the people native to the DS9 setting. The ship they used was made with the FASA ship creator originally and was an sensor "electronic" warfare scout that was supposed to be a small stablemate of the V30 Winged Defender class, and the Faeht is the best match for that in STO.

I have a few others modeled on characters from other games like that, but the majority are originals from here (around thirty in all between two accounts). Their signature ships are selected the same way though, something that draws from their background story and hopefully looks good.

For instance, one of those originals (another Romulan) flies an Elachi Qulash that she and some of her friends captured while it was walking around Virinat in the attack from the tutorial. Her background story simply ignores that you have to use the warbird for part of the tutorial (and first few missions), retconning the captured Qulash for the stuff you have to do in the Warbird.

Generally looks/ theme first, then i find a build that works with what the ship offers.

I would not call it looks but aspects as to how well a ship fits to the theme of a character do play into it a bit. But na, for the most part I simply end up adjusting the theme of a character if I need an excuse to put it on a ship with appealing stats. Of course in some cases I compromise a bit but ships like the Tzenkethi Dread, Jugger, Verne, Discoprise, Styx and a few others are just too appealing to not have active in my deck of characters. If a character is set on a ship I never switch back, only eye on more potent releases if they happen.

Yup. Yang was suppose to drive an escort, but somehow the Intrepid(i) fits her so much better. Others stay in the ships they ork well in, there is no rhyme or reason sometimes. It makes sense that my AOY toon fly a constitution. my first KDF has not really found a ship yet but Weiss is very happy in her Kor.

For me, it's always a balance between visuals and performance. I just can't pick one MAIN thing. The Vaadwaur Juggernaut, for example, dishes out incredible performance. But I have zero interest in flying one from a visual standpoint. On the other side, BEFORE the legendary Excelsior came out, the only T6 Excelsior option had a horrible boff layout for the style that I want to play. So despite the fact that I love the visuals of the Excelsior, I almost never used it.

If you put a gun to my head, I guess I have to edge out performance ever so slightly over visuals. But it's too close to call for me to make a hard decision in the poll.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

There was talk from the devs about next summer event's prize being the T6 version of that luxury cruiser so you will probably get your wish (unless they change their minds and do something else) :)

It would be really nice to get it and complete the Risan set, and I have several possible ideas for captains who would find a ship that big that can land on water useful (even if that landing ability is only "off camera" like the Elachi Qulash is with its walker mode).

Yep, and it looked so nice when it was actually in the water, back in '14. It screamed Risa.
And the ship itself SCREAMS anime.

On Reddit I said looks. And this is still true to a point. I love my TLC Connie. Not just because she looks Trek to me. But because she also performs.
I do not want to buy a ship for the performance if I don't actually like the looks. But I will sometimes use a ship I am not fond of to try things out. Like a Risan corvette to try a speed/turret build. But they are never on my 'mains' My mains have their ship they command. My AoY in her Connie does not fly anything but that and the proper theme shuttle. Because that is who she is. My original Rom only operates a Rom Vet destroyer. Because it looks so right.

But other character like my KDF Delta flies what I put her in this week for experimenting.

TL/DR: Mainly looks, but sometimes experimenting.

If there's an endeavour for weapon x damage done I'll use a specific character and they each have a different ship so as to avoid every character being a copy paste of the last even though that's how it can feel since the unholy trinity of mmos has so little impact on anything.

Like others, it's all about theme mostly. Drummond is my Sci-Guy, and I don't think there is a better sci chip in game right now, and I have liked the intrepid in game. Deety was suppose to fly a battlecruiser, and has bounced around but she always returns to the T5 JHDC, especially now I have bug hangars. I have a few others in different ship, they tend to be in Oddys or Legendary Connies of one flavor or another

Themed Looks. My Roms are in T6 Fleet T'Varo's painted to look as close to T'Liss as I can get (until I can grind an actual T'Liss to reskin them with).

My Klingon (soon to be Klingons) in a T5U Fleet K'Tinga reskinned as a D7.

My Feds fly either a Gal-X, or a Paladin reskinned as a Ranger. Until I can get a TOS Connie, to which they will ALL switch, and never switch again.

My separatist Gorn pirate flies a stolen T5U Orion Marauder which he adores (particularly its loot-stealing hangar pets)! That one also tickles me personally, because it reminds me of the Ur-Quan Dreadnoughts from Star Control II (I find myself growling "Launch Fighters" in my best Ur-Quan impression when the hangar pets launch)! :)

However, each captain also has a Risan cruise ship as a personal civilian off duty vessel built specifically for speed to use for Tour the Galaxy runs. :)

I’d have to say appearance is my main reason I fly the ships I do. Though in some regard I do like functionality as well. Needs to serve a little bit of the way I want to play but usually I can adapt to the seating of a ship easily.

I love a ship that has a unique bridge as well.. something a lot of these lockbox, and promo ships lack, sort of sucks.

I do too. While I don't spend all day on the bridge or anything I do use it on the ships that have good ones to get into character and soak up some of the theme.

My favorite so far is the Lukari bridge, it is actually good for stress relief and I sometimes consider taking a screenshot and using it as one of my desktops, and the Tholian Iktomi bridge is a close second for its alien vibe (the Elachi is good for that alien vibe too, though I like the Tholian one a bit better) and gadget-driven minimalism.

Other good ones are the DSC Walker bridge (ignoring that it has a JJwindow instead of a screen) and the Yitjara bridge. I have been wanting to get the Obelisk as much for its bridge (I heard it was the same as the one it has in Sphere of Influence) as for the ship itself, even though the ship performance is rather lackluster at best.

Just about any ship can do anything so unless you are chasing that extra 1% something, the ship's appearance is the main thing, imo.

I'd have to say a mix of both performance and aesthetics. My absolute favourite in all Star Trek in general is the original 1960s Enterprise, partly because it's the ship that started it all, and partly because I have a soft spot for that mid century retro look in general, including the sci fi of that era.
I am also fond of the KDF's Durgath simply for it's resemblance to the U.S.S. Cygnus from the Black Hole.
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.

And knowing is half the battle!

That's a great point. The.. opulence.. of the Voth bridge is part of the reason my Orion has been in the Bastion/Rampart for so long. It's also a lot of fun to bring new players to it, and the Bortasqu Bridge, for the first time. The Viewscreen changes for dialogue while using some of those bridges can be a real treat as well.. It kind of makes me miss the Solanae viewscreen now.
