Arc: pointless memory user

I've tried using shortcuts, I've tried disabling parts of it through Task manager, but nothing seems to work.
Whenever I try to launch STO, Arc launches with it. If I try to turn Arc off, STO shuts down.

I don't care that much about privacy or anything (as some people did years ago when the launcher was tied to Arc), but it just seems rather pointless to have a program running in the background all the time. Especially when that program takes up well over 100 MB or even 200 MB while serving no purpose at all during gameplay.

Why not give players an option to just close Arc, after launching STO if needed and Cryptic really wants to keep the launcher tied to it?

Almost all computers today have 8 GB or 16 GB RAM, so 200 MB is not that much.

Speaking of though, that's weird. Because for me, the ARC client uses between 70 MB and 80 MB. It never breaks the 100 MB barrier.

making sure i read this right...

you have located the sto exe and use that and the arc still launches with it?

many here do just that above and no arc is ever launched, including myself.

No, I hadn't. I searched for it using the Windows search bar and then added a shortcut to the taskbar from there. Thanks a lot, your solution worked for me too.

It's not much and my computer has no trouble handling it, but still. STO causes it to clearly make more noise compared to lighter programs (which isn't surprising of course) so even a few %'s less memory use is welcome. And if it's saved by shutting down unused programmes, well, why not? :)

Go into the Star Trek Online folder, look for Startrekonline.exe, right click that and create desktop shortcut.

Are you running STO with a 2gb memory PC or something? 100 mb is virtually nothing
Open chrome and 3-4 tabs of webpages(not empty tabs) and notice how each tab gets usually over 100mb each, sometimes over 300 even
  • My gamer has 32 gb of ram and a 4 GHZ CPU so, lol, 100 mb is, well, unnoticeable. Having said that. If I need to run STO without Arc for diagnostic purposes I can anytime I want to. Although right now I'm having trouble with Arc not wanting to open (I prolly need to re-install it) due to my re-installing windows 10 on the main SSD and being a lil too drunk when I did so forgetting to save certain files for re-copy to that drive, lol. (Hey, we all have bad days, lol ). But I should be OK after re-installing Arc. Until then I'll play without it temporarily if that's Okay?? After all, I just got my internet back after 6 months of being offline so........ errrrr,.....well,....You get the idea. Gotta enjoy myself a lil bit eh?
